Chapter 46 - Chapter 45 — Facade of Families

"Ella… I want to introduce someone to you," Jasper said over the phone, his voice casual yet carrying a subtle undertone that made her curiosity spike.

"Oh, really? I'll be there soon," Ella replied, gathering her things and leaving her office, wondering who Jasper wanted her to meet.

When she arrived, she found a few people seated, waiting as if expecting her.

"Hi," Ella greeted, exchanging polite smiles and handshakes, studying their expressions carefully, trying to gauge their reactions.

Jasper stood beside her, holding her hands gently. His touch was grounding, a small anchor in the unfamiliar scene.

"Ella, these are my family," Jasper began, his voice warm and deliberate. "This is my mom, my dad, my little cousin, and my nephew. My sister couldn't make it; she has a lot on her plate," he said, pointing to each of them as he introduced them with careful precision.

"This is the woman of my dreams, my happy place, my love," Jasper continued, showering Ella with compliments as he presented her to his so-called family. His words were sweet, flattering, and almost intoxicating, but to Ella, they felt heavy, calculated, and slightly forced, a performance she could sense beneath the surface.

Feeling the weight of the moment pressing on her chest, Ella leaned closer and whispered, "I need to see you outside," gently taking his hand and leading him to a quiet corner.

"What are you doing?!" she asked sharply, her voice laced with unease, frustration bubbling under the surface.

"You promised we wouldn't rush things, so why are you doing this?" she continued, demanding answers, tension knotting in her chest.

"I thought you loved me…" Jasper said softly, his tone smooth but manipulative, attempting to twist the situation in his favor.

"Yes… yes, I do love you, but I need time. I said yes because you assured me we weren't rushing, so…" Ella's voice wavered, trying to assert her boundaries while keeping her composure.

"I know… I know. I just wanted to introduce my family to you, nothing more…" Jasper replied, his voice calm, almost calculated, as if weighing each word carefully.

"You barely know me… so I thought it was wise to do this. He said, struggling to steady his voice.

"Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry if I overreacted," Ella said, softening slightly, trying to bridge the tension and maintain some control over the situation.

"No, you don't need to. I understand you perfectly," Jasper said, drawing her into a hug. The closeness was comforting on the surface, but Ella couldn't shake the feeling that it masked hidden control beneath.

Together, they returned inside, smiles on their faces as they joined the others. They sipped wine, dined, and shared light conversation. To an outsider, it looked real, natural, but deep inside, a quiet seed of doubt lingered in Ella's mind. Appearances, she reminded herself, could be deceiving.

Later that evening, Ella returned home. She freshened up and changed into her comfortable nightwear, settling into a rare moment of privacy.

"They looked welcoming," Ella whispered to herself, recalling the carefully staged introductions and polite interactions at Jasper's place.

"I guess Ben was just overthinking, putting me in doubt about Jasper," she continued, silently blaming him for the fleeting unease she had felt. After all, Jasper had never given her a reason to distrust him.

A small, contented smile spread across her face. She swung her legs in the air absentmindedly, feeling a flutter of excitement. In her heart, she told herself she was doing the right thing, trusting the warmth of the night and the illusion of happiness she had just experienced.
