Chapter 86 - Chapter 85 — Hidden Alliances

The office smelled of wet paper and fear. Rain pounded the windows, the storm outside echoing the chaos inside. Ella crouched behind the overturned desk, heart hammering. Ben was just a step ahead, tense and ready. Shadows moved in the dim emergency light, and each movement made her pulse spike.

"Ben… they're more than we thought," Lucas whispered in her earpiece, voice tight and anxious. "At least three more. Security is stronger than we expected. Rita… she didn't come alone."

Ben's jaw tightened. "Then we adapt. We can't let them escape this time." He gestured for Ella to follow, eyes scanning for sudden movements.

From the corner, Reed emerged, crouched low, holding a small pistol. "Back exit's covered. We've got eyes, but these guys are fast. You need to move now."

Ella swallowed hard. "I… I don't know if I can." Her fingers shook as she gripped the desk. Facing multiple dangerous people, including Rita, made her stomach churn.

Ben put a hand on her shoulder. "You can. You're stronger than you think. We're in this together. Remember?"

She nodded, steeling herself. Together. The word repeated in her mind like a lifeline.

They moved as one toward the back exit, careful and slow. The storm outside drenched them as soon as the door opened, wind and rain slapping their faces.

In the alley, silhouettes moved. Two figures separated from the shadows, heading for the stairwell. One of them was Jasper. Her stomach lurched. He was supposed to be an ally, but something in his eyes made her hesitate.

"Jasper?" she hissed.

He froze, then smiled; not friendly. Small, sinister twist of lips. "Ella… you've been busy. I see. But you've underestimated what's at stake."

Ben stepped forward, between her and Jasper. "What are you doing here? Are you with her?"

Jasper's eyes glimmered with calculation. "I'm… making sure things go as they should. You think you know the game, Ben, but you're only seeing the board. Not all the players."

Ella felt panic rise. "He's… he's with her?"

Lucas's voice came through frantically. "They're moving fast. You have maybe five minutes before backup shows. Decide. Now."

Ben didn't flinch. "We take control. We split. Ella, with me. Reed and Lucas cover the back. Jasper, he's not on our side. Watch him."

Ella swallowed hard, gripping Ben's hand. They moved through the alley, eyes darting in all directions.

From a fire escape above, a rope ladder dropped. A figure slid down, Rita. Her eyes were cold, calculating, but slightly unsure. Perhaps she hadn't expected them to be ready.

"Going somewhere?" Ben shouted.

Rita smiled sharply. "I'm always one step ahead. Or so I thought." She raised her hands, holding small flash drives. She claimed the devices held the information they'd been hunting, but she wasn't giving it freely.

Ella's stomach twisted. "That's it. That's what we've been chasing."

Rita's eyes flicked to Jasper, now tense at her side. "We can leave now. You take what you want, or get nothing."

Ben's voice was calm but firm. "No. Not this time. The game ends tonight."

Rita's smirk faltered. "Bold words. But boldness doesn't always win."

Before anyone reacted, a car screeched at the alley entrance. Headlights blinded them, and two more figures jumped out. Mercenaries. Professionals. Ella's pulse rose. This was no longer a simple confrontation.

"Everyone, positions!" Ben barked.

Chaos exploded. Rain, wind, shouting, and fast footsteps filled the alley. Ella ducked behind a dumpster, water soaking her jacket. Ben moved like a shadow, controlling every angle.

Jasper lunged at the flash drive. Rita spun, narrowly avoiding him, and ran toward the alley exit. Lucas shouted updates through the earpiece. "They're splitting! Back exit and fire escape; they're scattering!"

Ella froze briefly, fear clawing her, but Ben's hand pulled her forward. "We move. Together."

They chased. Every second counted. Rain-slicked streets, narrow corners, and adrenaline pushed their muscles. Behind them, footsteps echoed: Rita's laughter, Jasper's curses, the mercenaries' shouts.

At the alley corner, they cornered a mercenary. Ben lunged, precise and brutal, disarming him. Ella grabbed the flash drive from his pocket, holding it tight, hands shaking.

"Got it," she whispered in her earpiece.

Lucas's relieved voice came through. "Copy everything! Now! They're retreating!"

Rita and Jasper disappeared into the storm, like ghosts. For a moment, only the rain made noise.

Ben's shoulders sagged slightly as tension left him. He looked at Ella. "We got what we came for. But it's not over. They'll regroup. And be smarter."

Ella hugged the flash drive. "We at least have a chance now. This… this could be everything we need."

The storm raged around them, soaking them, but for a brief moment, the alley felt like a victory. Not complete, not final but a step forward.

Rita and Jasper's shadows stayed in their minds. Allies were uncertain. Every move mattered. The game wasn't over. The night had just begun.

Ella looked up at the rain, feeling the chill bite her skin. "We need to plan. Fast. They won't wait."

Ben nodded. "We prepare. We adapt. And strike next, on our terms."

The city pulsed around them. Lights reflected on wet asphalt, rain echoing their heartbeat. Danger was everywhere, but now they had leverage.

And they wouldn't waste it.
