Chapter 13 - Part 3

The day began like any other, yet from the first step Liana took into the Verden estate halls, she felt a tension that was almost tangible. The air seemed heavier, every sound sharper, every shadow more menacing. Darius had spent the night sending subtle instructions through the servants — watch her movements, report any closeness with Eren, observe her reactions.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she moved through the corridors, careful to maintain a calm expression, every gesture measured. Her family's eyes followed her, even when they were ostensibly occupied elsewhere. Every word of advice, every reminder of duty, felt like a chain tightening around her chest.

Adrian met her in a quiet hallway, his expression grave. "Today will be the most dangerous," he whispered. "Darius has planned something… a trap. He will attempt to force you into a situation where your feelings for Eren are revealed. You must stay alert — every glance, every step, every heartbeat can be monitored. But remember, Liana… your courage is stronger than his schemes."

Liana swallowed hard. "I… I will try," she whispered, though doubt gnawed at her. "What if I fail? What if… I lose him?"

"You will not lose him," Adrian said firmly. "Not if you trust yourself, not if you trust each other. But you must be smart. Cautious. Stealthy. And brave."

---

By mid-morning, she found herself slipping into the garden under the pretense of tending flowers. The estate seemed unusually quiet, but every instinct screamed danger. Eren was already there, kneeling among the roses, his dark eyes scanning the surroundings even as he worked.

"You came," he murmured, a faint smile brushing his lips, though tension lingered in his eyes.

"I… I had to," Liana admitted softly, moving closer. "Every moment away… it feels like part of me is missing."

Eren straightened, alert, his gaze flicking to the edges of the garden. "We must be careful," he said. "Today… he will test us. Every move, every glance… we cannot falter."

A rustle in the bushes made her flinch. She caught a glimpse of a servant, unusually still, watching them with too-sharp eyes.

"They know," she whispered, panic threading her voice.

Eren's hand found hers, grounding her. "Then we act. Follow me."

---

He led her through a hidden path, winding through hedges and hidden corners, until they reached a secluded fountain. Their hands brushed, a fleeting touch that sent warmth and electricity racing through her veins.

"You must stay close," Eren whispered. "Every step matters."

"I… I trust you," she breathed, pressing her palm against his.

Suddenly, the sound of Darius' carriage wheels echoed through the estate. Liana's stomach dropped. He was arriving early — far earlier than expected.

"They're moving faster than we thought," Eren murmured, tension tightening his jaw. "We need to be careful. Hide, Liana… hide quickly."

They ducked behind a cluster of tall hedges, hearts pounding. Liana could feel Eren's steady presence beside her, a silent anchor against the storm of fear and danger. The carriage door opened, and Darius emerged, walking toward the garden with calculated steps.

---

Darius' eyes scanned the hedges. "I know you're here," he said, voice deceptively calm, but with a dangerous edge. "There's no point in hiding. The truth always comes out eventually."

Liana's heart leapt. He knew — he was closer than they imagined. She pressed herself against Eren, desperate for the moment to pass unnoticed.

"You remain calm," Eren whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Breathe. Trust me. Nothing will happen as long as we remain steady."

Darius approached, circling the garden, eyes sharp and predatory. Liana could feel the tension coiling in her chest, a mixture of fear and… something else, something thrilling in the presence of danger.

"You cannot hide what is clear," Darius said softly, almost to himself. "Attachments like yours… they cannot be denied. And yet… you dare to defy me."

Liana's hand squeezed Eren's. She felt the warmth of his fingers, the unspoken promise that he would protect her, and it steadied her trembling.

---

The standoff stretched for what felt like hours, though only minutes had passed. Darius' presence dominated the garden, and Liana's every instinct screamed to flee, to reveal nothing, to survive. Yet amidst the fear, the tension, and the danger, a quiet, forbidden intimacy grew between them. Each glance, each brush of fingers, each shared breath became a private rebellion against the world that refused to bless their love.

Finally, Darius stepped back, a dangerous smile playing on his lips. "Interesting… very interesting indeed. You are clever. But cleverness cannot last forever. One day… one mistake… and everything will be revealed."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving a charged silence in his wake. Liana exhaled shakily, leaning against Eren, trembling from adrenaline and emotion.

"You… you are safe," Eren whispered, holding her close, just enough to be felt, not seen. "For now."

Liana buried her face against his chest. "I… I do not know how much longer I can endure this," she admitted, voice muffled. "The danger, the secrecy… the constant fear."

Eren's arms tightened around her. "As long as we have each other, we endure. Fear and love walk together, Liana. And our love… it is stronger than the fear."

Her heart swelled, a mixture of terror and longing, but also a fierce determination. No matter the traps, no matter the schemes, no matter the pressures of family or society… she would not abandon him.

And as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the estate in long, mysterious shadows, Liana realized something profound: their love, forbidden and impossible as it might be, had taken root in the heart of danger itself. And it would endure.

A love the world would never bless… and yet, unshakable.
