Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Suneo's Not-So-Great Adventure

The sun was beating down on a small yacht in the middle of the ocean. It wasn't fancy at all. In fact, it looked pretty old and worn out.

"Ugh... this is terrible..." Suneo groaned.

He was holding a bucket, scooping water from inside the yacht and throwing it overboard. His arms were tired. His back hurt. He had been doing this for what felt like forever.

Scoop. Throw. Scoop. Throw. Scoop. Throw.

"Suneo! The water's coming in faster! Hurry up!" his father yelled from the deck above.

Suneo's dad was struggling with the sail, trying to keep it adjusted so the yacht would keep moving. Suneo's mom was helping him hold the ropes.

"I'm trying!" Suneo shouted back, wiping sweat from his forehead.

This wasn't what he had imagined. This yacht barely had room for three people! And it was leaking!

Suneo threw another bucket of water out and sat down on the stairs, breathing hard.

"I can't... anymore..." he panted.

As he rested, he noticed something on the stairs. His radio! He had brought it to listen to music but completely forgot about it with all the work.

"Maybe I can listen to some music," Suneo thought. "Just for a minute."

He picked up the radio and turned it on. Static noise filled the air. He switched channels.

Static. Static. Static. More static.

Finally, one channel came through clearly.

"Yes! I found one!" Suneo said, reaching to turn up the volume.

"Suneo! What are you doing down there? Get back to work!" his father's angry voice yelled from above.

"Coming!" Suneo quickly put the radio down and grabbed his bucket again.

He started bailing water frantically, running up and down the stairs. Up with the full bucket, dump it out, down for more water. Over and over.

Behind him, the radio crackled to life.

"—breaking news from the Atlantic Ocean. The treasure ship Santa Flamenco, which sank centuries ago carrying a massive amount of gold, has been discovered in the Bermuda Triangle. However, shortly after its discovery, the ship mysteriously disappeared again. Scientists believe it may have been pulled down by a deep water storm. Search teams are still looking for any debris or signs of the vessel. The Santa Flamenco was worth an estimated—"

The radio went back to static.

But Suneo didn't hear any of it. He was too busy hauling water.

"This is the worst trip ever," Suneo muttered, throwing out another bucket.

Meanwhile, further away, something amazing was happening.

Shin was running on water. Actually running on it, like it was solid ground.

"Catch me if you can!" Shin laughed, sprinting across the ocean surface.

"Get back here!" Gian shouted, chasing after him.

Behind them, Doraemon was floating along, riding small waves like they were slides.

This was all thanks to Doraemon's newest gadget - a special cream that repelled water. If you rubbed it on your skin, you could walk on water like it was nothing.

Back at the submarine, Nobita was lying on top, too tired to keep up.

"I'm... so tired..." Nobita said, completely wiped out.

"Are you okay, Nobita?" Shizuka asked, sitting next to him with a concerned look.

"Yeah... you guys go ahead. I'll just rest here," Nobita said.

"Then I'll stay with you," Shizuka smiled. "Someone should keep you company."

Far ahead, Gian was catching up to Shin.

"Gotcha!" Gian dove forward and landed flat on his stomach on the water's surface.

Shin grinned. "Perfect!"

He grabbed Gian by the feet and started pushing him forward like a shopping cart.

"Whoa! What are you doing?" Gian yelled, but he was laughing.

"Just wait!" Shin pushed harder and harder, running faster. When they had enough speed, he jumped and landed on Gian's back.

"Yahoo! I got myself a jetski!" Shin shouted, riding on Gian's back as they slid across the water.

Doraemon caught up, laughing so hard he almost fell over. "That's hilarious!"

"Your turn, Doraemon!" Shin jumped off Gian and grabbed Doraemon.

"Wait, what? No no no—whoa!" Doraemon yelped as Shin used him as a ride too.

Then both Gian and Doraemon looked at each other with matching grins.

"Shin's turn!" they said together.

"No way! You guys would crush me!" Shin yelled, backing away on the water. "Stay back! I'm warning you!"

But they chased him anyway, all three of them laughing and yelling.

After a while, they slowed down, catching their breath. That's when Shin noticed something in the distance.

"Hey, is that a yacht?" Shin pointed.

Gian squinted. "Yeah! There's actually a yacht out here!"

"Wanna check it out?" Doraemon asked.

"Sure!" they agreed.

They quietly walked across the water toward the yacht. It was small and kind of beat-up looking. Not fancy at all.

When they got close, they peeked around the side to see the deck.

"Wait... is that...?" Gian's eyes widened.

There, on the deck, was Suneo. He looked exhausted, his hair messy, his clothes soaked. He was carrying a bucket of water up some stairs.

"Suneo! Hurry it up!" a man's voice yelled.

"I'm going!" Suneo whined.

Gian put his hand over his mouth. Shin's eyes went wide. Doraemon blinked in surprise.

They watched Suneo dump the bucket overboard, then immediately go back down for more water.

"Is he... bailing water?" Shin whispered.

"By hand?" Gian added quietly.

"With a bucket?" Doraemon finished.

All three of them looked at each other.

"Didn't he say something about a private chef?" Gian said.

"And five bedrooms," Shin added.

"I think he mentioned a pool too," Doraemon said thoughtfully.

They looked back at the tiny, leaking yacht.

"I don't see a pool," Gian said.

"Maybe it's on the inside," Shin suggested.

"That would explain all the water," Doraemon said.

They all tried not to laugh.

At that moment, Suneo looked over and saw them. His face went from tired to horrified in an instant.

"What?! NO!" Suneo dropped his bucket with a clang and rushed over. "You guys! What are you doing here?!"

"Just hanging out," Gian said innocently. "Nice yacht!"

"How are you standing on water?!" Suneo looked panicked.

"Doraemon's gadget," Shin said. "So, uh, where's that pool you mentioned?"

Suneo's face turned red. "It's... it's below deck!"

"Below deck? So that's why you're taking water down there?" Gian asked with a straight face.

"What? No! I'm taking it OUT!" Suneo protested.

"Oh, so you're emptying the pool. That makes sense," Shin nodded seriously.

"It's not a pool! The yacht is leaking!" Suneo blurted out, then covered his mouth.

"Ah," Gian said. "So where do you keep your private chef? In the leak?"

"There's no chef!" Suneo said, then realized what he admitted. "I mean—"

"Suneo! Get back to work!" his father yelled.

"Just a minute, Dad!" Suneo turned back to them with desperate eyes. "Okay, look. You guys can make fun of me all you want, but PLEASE help me get off this thing first. I've been scooping water for six hours straight!"

"Six hours?" Shin's teasing expression softened. "Seriously?"

"My arms are dead. I can't feel my back. And there's no bathroom!" Suneo looked like he might actually cry. "Please. I'm begging you."

Gian and Shin exchanged glances.

"Alright, we'll help," Gian said.

"But you're never living this down," Shin added with a grin.

"I don't care! Just get me out of here!" Suneo whispered frantically.

Doraemon pulled out a white robot. "This is the Copy Robot. Press the button."

Suneo pressed it, and the robot transformed into an exact copy of him.

"Whoa..." Suneo stared at his twin.

"It'll take your place," Doraemon explained, quickly rubbing the water-repelling cream on Suneo. "Your parents won't notice."

"You guys are lifesavers!" Suneo quietly climbed over the yacht's side just as his father called again.

"Suneo! Where are you?"

The Copy Robot picked up the bucket. "Coming, Dad!"

The real Suneo, Shin, Gian, and Doraemon walked away across the water.

Once they were a safe distance away, Suneo let out a huge sigh of relief. "Oh man, thank you so much."

"So about those five bedrooms..." Gian started.

"There was ONE room. SINGULAR. And my dad snores," Suneo said miserably.

"And the chef?" Shin asked.

"We ate instant ramen. Cold. Because the stove was broken."

"The swimming pool?" Doraemon added.

"That was the leak. And I was swimming in misery," Suneo groaned. "Are you guys done?"

"Not even close," Gian laughed. "But seriously, that looked rough."

"It was terrible! I thought it was going to be fun, but it was just work, work, work!" Suneo complained. "What are you guys even doing out here?"

"Having an actual good time," Gian said. "Unlike some people."

"Gian made that very clear, thanks," Suneo muttered. "But how did you get out here? And what's with the walking on water thing?"

"We've got our own ride," Shin said. "Way better than a leaky yacht."

"What, like a boat?"

"Something like that," Gian said with a mysterious smile.

They walked across the water, and soon the red submarine came into view.

Suneo stopped walking. "What is that?"

"That's our ride," Shin said casually.

"That's a submarine!" Suneo's jaw dropped.

"Yep."

"A real submarine?!"

"Well, it's not fake," Gian said.

"But... how... where did you..." Suneo couldn't form a sentence.

On top of the submarine, Nobita sat up. "Hey! Who's that?"

"It's Suneo!" Gian called back.

"Suneo?" Nobita looked confused. Shizuka stood up next to him, equally puzzled.

They all climbed onto the submarine.

"Hi guys!" Suneo waved weakly.

"What are you doing here? What about your yacht trip?" Nobita asked.

Suneo's face went red. "Can we not talk about the yacht?"

"We rescued him," Doraemon explained. "He needed a break."

"From what?" Shizuka asked.

"Manual labor," Gian said, barely holding back laughter.

"It's not funny!" Suneo protested, but even he cracked a small smile.

"Wait, is this really a submarine?" Suneo walked around, examining it. "This is insane!"

"We went underwater this morning," Nobita said. "It was really cool!"

"And we had pizza for lunch that Shin made," Shizuka added.

"You made pizza? On a submarine? In the middle of the ocean?" Suneo looked at Shin.

"Yeah," Shin shrugged.

"So let me get this straight," Suneo said slowly. "While I was bailing water with a bucket, you guys were riding around in a submarine eating homemade pizza?"

"Pretty much," Gian grinned.

"I hate all of you," Suneo said, but he was smiling. "Can I at least see inside?"

"Sure, come on," Nobita said.

They went down into the submarine. Suneo looked around at the comfortable seats, the big windows, and all the controls.

"This is actually amazing," Suneo said quietly, sitting down in one of the seats. "So much better than that stupid yacht."

"Told you that you should've come with us in the first place," Gian said, plopping down next to him.

"Yeah, yeah," Suneo waved him off. "So what now? We just gonna sit here?"

"We could keep exploring," Shin suggested. "We've got the whole ocean."

"I'm in," Doraemon said.

"Me too!" Shizuka agreed.

"Sounds good to me," Nobita added.

Everyone looked at Suneo.

"What? Obviously I'm coming," Suneo said. "Anything's better than that yacht. Besides, someone needs to make sure you guys don't do anything stupid."

"Says the guy who brought a leaky yacht," Gian shot back.

"I DIDN'T BUY IT, MY DAD DID!"

They all laughed, including Suneo.

Outside, the afternoon sun sparkled on the endless blue ocean. Inside the submarine, six friends were together, ready for whatever came next.
