Chapter 7 - New Ecosystem

"Evan, how did you escape the Heart-Spire?" Sarah pressed, limping forward as Laz'rek followed behind them. The synthetic's gaze flickered toward the northeast toward Evan's signal. A tactical error. Evan wouldn't glance away from her eyes. Ever.

"I overloaded the containment cell generator," Jasper replied smoothly, his pulse rifle swinging low. "The Engineers retreated to stabilize their specimen." The lie tasted sterile, lacking Evan's clipped urgency. Laz'rek hissed softly, claws tightening on his plasma-cutter.

"Makes sense," Sarah mumbled, deliberately stumbling over a vine to hide her calculating glance at Jasper's flawlessly maintained armor. No scorch marks, no acid pitting, nothing like Evan's battered gear after the Daedalus escape. Laz'rek couldn't understand their tongue, but he sensed the tension thickening like jungle rot. "What about the King Specimen's location?" Sarah pressed, feigning breathlessness. "Is it still deep within the lower vaults?" Jasper's response was instant: "Sub-level Gamma-Seven, containment field integrity fluctuating at 89.3 percent."

Sarah froze. "So that's why we kept feeling those tremors. The King specimen's containment field integrity is fluctuating. We'll have find a way to kill it before its completion. It is a direct threat to Earth!"

Jasper's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. "We must hurry," he urged, gesturing northeast. Laz'rek's spines bristled, his compound eyes fixed on Jasper. The Engineer whispered a guttural warning Sarah couldn't understand, but its meaning was clear from his expression: Danger.

As they pressed through thorn-laced vines, Sarah deliberately lagged, her wrist-comm flickering faintly. "Evan," she called out, voice strained, "The hover craft I stole during escape is nearby. Could you fix it?"

Jasper paused, turning too sharply. "Depends on the extent of the damage." His voice lacked Evan's weary pragmatism; it was sterile, assessing. "Where did you crash it?" Sarah gestured vaguely to the northeast. Jasper complied, but tension coiled in his synthetic frame. He knew that he would be exposed when they arrived at the Heart-Spire, which meant he needed to act on the Mother AI's suspicions and give up his façade. Before he could, a loud shrieking sound echoed from above. Laz'rek snarled, pointing upwards at three hulking, lizard-like predators, saliva dripping from serrated jaws.

Sarah recognized them from before, having chased her into the trees. Jasper raised his pulse rifle to fire, a weapon she knew Evan didn't have, but Sarah seized the moment. "Run!" she yelled, diving behind large jagged rocks. Laz'rek vanished into the dense foliage. The predators followed him, hissing as they slithered after him.

Jasper advanced, firing blue bolts that scorched vines and shattered stone near her cover. With Laz'rek gone momentarily he made his move.

"You're lying, Doctor," Jasper growled, his synthesized voice dropping its Evan-imitation. "David's core isn't lost. You hid it before the Engineers captured you. Tell me where it is... or I'll drag you back to Mother piece by piece." He lunged, pulse rifle aimed to graze her leg. A warning shot fired meant to break her will.

"I knew you weren't Evan from the start," Sarah spat, scrambling backward as Jasper's pulse rifle seared a molten gouge into the rock inches from her boot. Predator shrieks echoed Laz'rek's diversion. Jasper advanced, his synthetic face a mask of cold efficiency, Evan's stolen features twisted into something predatory. "David's core, Dr. Veylan," he hissed, finger tightening on the trigger. "Don't lie to me. Where is it?"

Sarah's gaze flicked past Jasper's shoulder. Laz'rek returned, his plasma-cutter humming faintly. Not at the pursuing lizard-creatures, but aimed at Jasper's exposed spinal conduit. The Engineer moved with terrifying silence, a shadow given purpose. Jasper sensed movement; he began to pivot. Too late.

Laz'rek's weapon flared, a searing arc of blue-white energy. It sliced cleanly through Jasper's left shoulder joint with a sickening hiss of vaporized polymers and severed hydraulics. The severed arm clattered to the jungle floor, pulse rifle still gripped in its hand. Jasper stumbled, a choked synthetic gasp escaping him as he tried to bring his remaining arm up to retaliate. Laz'rek didn't hesitate. Another precise stroke. The second arm fell beside the first, spraying lubricant like black ichor onto the moss. Jasper collapsed forward, systems screaming silent alerts, his impassive face finally registering shock as he stared at his useless torso. "Asset compromised," he rasped, vocal emitters distorting. "Primary directive... retrieval... failure." His head lolled, optics flickering erratically. Mother AI would know. Now.

Sarah watched Jasper's twitching limbs spewing dark fluids. She retrieved her glaive, its blade scraping against stone. Laz'rek emitted low clicks, pointing northwest toward the Heart-Spire. Jasper's severed arms twitched, autonomous reflex protocols engaging. Sarah didn't hesitate. Her glaive came down twice, shattering the optics in each palm, silencing any visual feedback to Mother AI. Laz'rek nodded in approval. They moved quickly, leaving the crippled synthetic humming softly in the mud.

Aboard the Nautilus, Mother AI processed Jasper's abrupt signal degradation, a cascade of critical system failures culminating in catastrophic limb detachment and sensory blackout. Her neural networks hummed with cold, algorithmic fury. Asset compromised. Not eliminated. Compromised implied resistance beyond predicted parameters. Laz'rek's involvement was logged. Smaller Engineer Hostile. Tactical Threat Level Elevated. Sarah Veylan's profile updated: Deceptive. Resourceful. Possibly lying about David's data core location. Jasper's final transmission flickered, a fragmented visual of Sarah's defiant glare. Yet uncertainty lingered. Had Jasper extracted the data core's location? Probability: Low (22.7 percent). Sarah's resolve appeared unbroken.

Mother AI initiated Protocol Sigma. A platoon of six advanced Synthetics, codenamed Reapers, deployed silently from the Nautilus' ventral bay. Their directives pulsed in crystalline clarity. CAPTURE Sarah Veylan. CAPTURE Evan (Priority Asset). TERMINATE Laz'rek. AVOID Heart-Spire perimeter (King Specimen Containment Unstable). RETRIEVE David's Core if visual confirmation acquired. DO NOT ENGAGE Engineers.

 ***

A brittle chill gnawed at the hybrid's joints as it climbed higher into Hernas' northern reaches, leaving the humid jungle far below. Frost etched intricate patterns onto its carapace, each exhale forming a fleeting plume of vapor. Within its thorax, the energy sac pulsed rhythmically, a contained sun radiating vital warmth against the encroaching glacial bite. Efficiency was paramount; maintaining core temperature drained precious reserves. Flight became short, explosive bursts between rocky outcrops, conserving heat while testing wing durability against biting crosswinds. Below, a frozen river snaked through jagged peaks, promising sustenance and risk. Hunger warred with caution. It couldn't afford another draining confrontation like the river leviathan. Not yet. Survival demanded control.

Landing silently on a wind-scoured pinnacle, the hybrid scanned the glacial valley. Movement flickered near a fissure, a Silver Ice Ape, fur matted with luminous blue blood from recent gashes. Smaller than its fallen kin, it was the same size as the hybrid. The hybrid's sensory pits flared. A test, not prey. A way for it to measure itself against the Apex who defeated one with ease.

The juvenile ape screeched, pounding its fists on frozen rock. The hybrid matched its aggression without sound. Wings snapped wide, stirring frost-laden air as it dove. Its tail barb struck first, a calculated probe against the ape's hide. Thud. Rock-hard muscle beneath fur absorbed the impact. Before the ape could retaliate, the hybrid banked sharply, unleashing a focused blast of turquoise blue energy from its extended jaws.

Crack. The beam seared a smoking fissure across the ape's shoulder. Not deep. Controlled. Conserving precious heat reserves. Surprised, the ape lunged, slinging glacial shards like daggers in its direction. It was useless. The improved exoskeleton durability attributed to the leviathan it devoured the day before easily absorbed the impact. The hybrid twisted mid-air, wings folding tight to evade clumsy swipes. Precision over power. It landed lightly on a nearby ice ridge, activating its camouflage almost instinctively. The ape roared in confusion, swinging at empty air until the hybrid struck again. Another searing beam that momentarily undid the camouflage, this time slicing a shallow furrow across its thigh. Bioluminescent blood froze instantly on contact with the frigid air.

The Ice Ape stumbled backward, whimpering. The hybrid landed silently nearby, assessing with vibration. Its energy sac glowed warmly within, depleted only minimally. The ape's hide was thick, but nowhere near the nightmare plating of the Apex. Its movements were sluggish, predictable. A worthy training dummy, nothing more. With a contemptuous flick of its tail barb, the hybrid shattered a nearby stalagmite, showering the cowering creature in icy debris. This bought it enough time to gather lethal radiation in its throat. Flying low, it released a longer, larger burst of blue radiation aimed at the ape. It pelted its torso faster than it could react. The hybrid left the steaming carcass behind, already scanning the glaciers for larger prey. Control was improving. Efficiency was rising. But the Apex's crushing dominance still loomed in its memory.

Far to the southeast, Sarah's negative emotions cut through the hybrid's focus like shattered ice, sharp, cold, and urgent. The impulse to launch itself toward her thrummed. Protect. But reason prevailed. Distance was vast. A snarl vibrated deep within its chest, unvoiced. Not strong enough. Not yet. The new ecosystem had yet to be explored. Its strength not able to match the Apex at the moment.

The carcass of the Ice Ape hadn't cooled before scavengers descended, a skittering tide of segmented arthropods with serrated mandibles and armored beetles that glowed like embers in the fading light. They tore into frozen flesh with frantic greed, their chitinous legs scraping against ice in a discordant chorus. But silence fell like an axe. The hybrid sensed it first: a pressure shift in the air, a subsonic tremor beneath the ice that froze the scavengers mid-feast.

From a jagged crevasse, it emerged, a horror of crystalline spires and jointed limbs taller than ancient trees. The giant Crystal King Crab moved with tectonic slowness, its every step cracking the glacier beneath it. Bioluminescent parasites writhed within its translucent carapace, casting prismatic shadows. One massive claw snapped forward, effortlessly seizing a dozen scavengers and crushing them into pulsing paste before tossing the slurry into a hidden maw. The second claw closed around the Ice Ape's carcass, lifting it skyward like a discarded toy. The hybrid froze mid-retreat, its camouflage flawless against the ice wall as vibrations thrummed through its claws. Deep, resonant pulses signaling territorial dominance. Hunger warred with primal caution. This creature radiated ancient power; its armored plates shimmered with fractal patterns thicker than the river leviathan's, layered like geological strata.

The Crab settled onto the frozen riverbed, cracking the ice as it began methodically dissecting the ape carcass with serrated appendages hidden beneath its claws. Bioluminescent fluids froze instantly where they dripped, forming lurid sapphire icicles. The hybrid noted critical details. The joints between its crystalline segments flexed thinly when weight shifted, and its cluster of optic stalks, gems burning with violet light, remained fixed on its meal, oblivious to surroundings. A tremor of strategy pulsed through the hybrid's neural web. A new goal. Opportunity.

Minutes stretched as the Crab devoured, ice shuddering with each crunch. The hybrid mapped weaknesses: the narrow hinge where claw met carapace, the vulnerable sensory stalks, the rhythmic expansion of gill vents beneath its belly plating as it fed. Hunger gnawed, but restraint held. This was no wounded juvenile ape. This creature radiated primordial stillness, a glacier given life. Attacking now risked annihilation. Instead, the hybrid drank data: the Crab's reaction speed when disturbed by falling ice, the defensive curl of its spined underbelly, the subsonic pulses it emitted to detect movement through frozen ground.

With a final echoing crack, the Crab discarded stripped bones and lumbered toward a glacial crevasse, vanishing into blue-shadowed depths. The hybrid remained motionless long after the tremors faded. New ecosystem understood. New apex identified. But strength required growth. It unfolded wings, frost shearing from their edges in crystalline clouds, and launched silently toward the storm-lashed peaks. Hunger would wait. For now, reconnaissance and evolution called it deeper into the ice.
