Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Encounter

In the dead of night, as the moon cast long, dancing shadows over the fields north of Aris, the spiritual Ronin remained silent.

The flow of Ki was in turmoil, not just due to the frantic dance of the Silent Ones, but also because of a new, subtle interruption. The Silent Guardian had dissolved again, and the Keepers' deception had momentarily left the Silent Ones without clear direction, their "minds" driven by the Whispering One's frustration but lacking a precise target.

The Ronin perceived that fluctuation, that moment of uncertainty.

One of the disharmonious entities, closer to his position, had slowed, almost hesitating, its Ki aura weak and confused. It was an alien creature, the Ronin perceived. It was not human, and its Ki was corrupted, a void that drained the vital energy around it. He sensed its deep malice and inherent danger. It was a threat to harmony, something to be eliminated.

Without a sound, he moved.

His form was a flash, a breath that slid between the trees, his Ki concentrated, every movement an extension of his will. He reached the entity in moments. The creature, perceiving a presence it couldn't identify at the last moment, turned, its empty eyes fixed on the Ronin.

There was no hesitation.

The Ronin drew his arm back from his empty sheath, and, as an emanation of his own spirit, a blade of incandescent Ki materialized in his hand. It was not a physical sword, but a blade of pure energy, pulsing with heat.

It was an art he had perfected: his blade was made of Ki. With a fluid, lethal motion, the ethereal blade sliced through the air. The entity had no time to react. The Ki blade passed through it, and the creature, instead of bleeding, disintegrated into an explosion of black ash that the night wind immediately dispersed. The Ronin perceived the resonance of the corrupted Ki dissolve and a slight improvement in the ambient flow. The threat had been neutralized.

In the following days, Kael continued his "apprenticeship" in Aris. The Silent Ones were scattered, and he had returned to check personally that everything was well in the village before continuing his mission through the Dream Veils.

His insomnia persisted, but it was accompanied by surprising vigor. He became accustomed to working late into the night and starting the day before everyone else, leveraging his unusual rhythm.

One afternoon, while Kael was tidying tools in the shop, the door opened, and a dark shadow stood against the light. A man Kael had never seen entered.

It was the Ronin.

His simple clothes and calm demeanor made him almost invisible, yet Kael immediately sensed a different presence. It was not a dream resonance in the way he knew it, but a spiritual density, a profound calm, and also an acute vigilance that distinguished him from any other inhabitant of Aris. It was like looking at a mountain stream: calm on the surface, but with a powerful, deep current beneath. Kael felt that this man was different from others in a way that resonated with his own hidden nature.

He approached the counter, his dark eyes scrutinizing Kael with an almost disarming intensity. His voice was low but clear. "I was looking for a sharpening stone. For a... Tanto." He was referring to a short dagger, and Kael noticed the subtle bulges beneath the Ronin's shin guards, suggesting hidden blades.

Kael guided him toward the sharpening tools section. As the Ronin examined the stones, a dense silence settled between them, charged with mutual, unspoken curiosity. Kael felt an inexplicable urge to trust this man, to share something of his reality. Perhaps it was his own instinct recognizing a force, albeit different, that fought for balance.

The Ronin chose a stone, and as he handed it to Kael for payment, his eyes met Kael's.

"Strange shadows are moving in the woods lately," the Ronin murmured, a seemingly casual phrase heavy with meaning. "Non-human creatures. I... resolved a problem the other night. A dark figure. It disintegrated like ash when struck by my blade." His words were measured, a test, an offering.

Kael understood.

The Ronin had not simply resolved a problem; he had faced a Silent One. The fact that he spoke of it so openly, albeit vaguely, was a sign of perception that went beyond the ordinary.

"They were Silent Ones," Kael said, lowering his voice with a furtive glance toward the shop door. "Extensions of something larger. Of the Ash."

The Ronin raised an eyebrow, a shadow of skepticism in his gaze. "Ash? That is not a name I know. And how do you know about these... creatures?"

Kael felt the strength of the other's presence, the deep wisdom that emanated from him. This was a man who had seen things that ordinary people could not imagine. This prompted him to open up, given that the person before him had openly described the event.

He explained, in a serious and hushed tone, about the Dream Realm, his role, the Ash that sought to corrupt dreams and souls, and the Silent Ones as its emissaries in the waking world.

"I come from that world," Kael concluded, pointing to himself. "I am only here for a short time. I have been in a deep sleep for weeks, fighting the Ash."

The Ronin listened, his expression unperturbed.

There was no disbelief in his eyes, but a cautious assessment. "Dreams... energies... this Dream Realm... it is knowledge that does not belong to our traditions. But the corruption you describe, the 'Ash,' echoes the disharmonies that our Ki perceives." He was not entirely convinced, but he was curious. "And you say these 'creatures' are just extensions? How do you fight them?"

Kael realized the Ronin struggled to believe in a world so different from his own. "To truly fight them, one must enter the Dream Realm. However, even here, their material forms can be defeated, much like cutting the branches of a tree only to make the roots grow stronger. They are like... shadows, but made of an energy capable of destroying life. You, with your... blade, struck their essence." Kael paused. "Now, it is your turn. I have told you about the Ash. I would like to understand you and your people better. Your presence here is not random: I sense it."

The Ronin reflected. His ethics required a degree of discretion. He agreed.

"My name is Kenji. I am a... traveler. My people seek balance. We perceive disharmonies in the earth's Ki and seek to eliminate them." He did not reveal much, only half-truths. Kael understood that Kenji was still skeptical, still in the observation phase.

"Very well, Kenji," Kael said, his eyes gleaming with an idea. "I do not ask you to believe everything right away. I only ask you to do one thing for me. Remain in the village for a few days, especially when I am absent. And pay attention to your sleep. Pay attention to the quality of your rest, and whether you perceive those 'shadows' in the woods again, or whether you feel more vigilant. It might give you an insight into what is happening. My presence, even while sleeping, has an effect, and my absence will change it. It is a test, if you will."

Kenji looked at him with curiosity, struck by the unusual and intriguing proposal. "I accept your test…" he replied, with a slight hint of irony in his tone.

'... And we shall see...' he thought.
