Cherreads

Chapter 8 - The Last Sorceress

Ruins

The world feels wrong.

Vex moves silently beside Elle as the team advances through the skeletal remains of the city. The fallen buildings curve inward like ribcages, the shattered streets glittering with metallic dust. A faint red glow pulses across the skyline, the distant heartbeat of the Reaper lattice.

Shade scouts ahead in flickers of soft blue teleportation.

Stryke follows the trail of residual energy signatures.

Surge paces impatiently, little explosive pops bursting under his feet.

Alloy and Bul take the rear, one calm as stone, the other cracking his knuckles.

But Vex, she feels something none of them do.

A call.

Not a voice, not a thought, a pull, like gravity woven through her DNA.

Her Hex Node flickers under her skin, a warm pulse that won't stop rising.

Elle glances back at her. "Vex, you okay?"

"I… I don't know."

Her voice comes out soft, careful, but trembling at the edges.

"Something is, ahead. Something alive. Something powerful."

Surge huffs. "Better be something worth fighting."

Vex doesn't answer. Her silver eyes shift into pale pink, Pixie-instinct rising.

She feels magic and it's breaking.

---

The Courtyard

The team steps out into a wide courtyard of collapsed stone and twisted steel.

Vex freezes.

There, in the center, kneeling like a fallen statue, is Magik. Or what remains of her.

Her armor is cracked, leaking golden embers.

Her braided blonde hair hangs loose, burned at the ends. The Soulsword flickers weakly in her hand, runes dimming with every breath.

Three Reapers encircle her, their bodies warped with runes and eldritch burns.

One of them is unlike the others, a Magic-Assimilator, its jagged frame carved with shifting sigils. It raises a blade. It's about to kill her.

"Go!" Elle shouts.

Everything erupts.

---

The Battle

Surge detonates forward, explosions bursting beneath each step, turning him into a streak of white and gold.

Alloy launches himself skyward, magnetic fields humming as he slams into the nearest Reaper.

Bul charges with a roar, the ground cracking beneath his weight.

Stryke fires precise optic blasts, thin, surgical, devastating.

Elle summons a burst of icy wind, forcing two Reapers off balance.

Shade appears behind the third, phasing her arm through its chest to disrupt internal systems.

They hit hard. They hit fast.

But Vex, she runs past them, toward Magik.

---

Final Moments

Vex drops to her knees beside her.

"Stay with me, please, stay."

Magik's eyes flutter open. Blue light flickers weakly in them. She smiles, a small, painful, beautiful smile. "You're, not one of mine," she rasps, voice breaking.

"I'm, Vex. I can help you."

"No."

Magik lifts a trembling hand. "You can finish, what I couldn't."

Her hand touches Vex's cheek, and everything breaks loose.

---

THE MEMORY SURGE

A violent flash erupts between them, violet, gold, and white. Vex screams, her absorption DNA ignites. Her mind fractures.

Memory after memory slams into her.

Cable firing through a collapsing hallway

Magneto tearing Reapers apart with a hurricane of metal

Hope Summers glowing like a sun, screaming as she burns through the swarm

Juggernaut holding up an entire building so children could escape

Domino dragging wounded mutants through a portal

A magical Reaper draining the sky itself

Reaper hives melting cities

Children crying as Magik teleports them away

More memories of blood, fire, pain, determination, and sacrifice.

Each image stabs through her skull. She falls forward, gripping Magik's armor, breathing in broken gasps.

Her hair lifts, glowing with every color in her DNA.

"Stop, please, stop." But Rogue's gift does not stop. It never stops.

---

The Last Vision

The final memory explodes across her mind:

A stone vault deep underground, filled with mutant signatures, circular chamber glowing blue, the symbol of the Resistance carved into the floor.

Magik's voice, inside Vex's skull. "Find them."

Magik Dies, and her body dissolves into golden ash.

The Soulsword falls, but before it hits the ground, Vex catches it. The sword ignites in violet fire.

[XIMERA CORE — HEX NODE: ACTIVATED]

Catalyst DNA Source: ILLYANA RASPUTIN

Memory Echo Absorbed: 31%

Magic Affinity: UNLOCKED

Soulsword Synchronization: BOUND

WARNING: Neural Overload

Her scream shakes the courtyard.

And the Reapers turn toward her.

---

The Scream

Vex's scream isn't human. It isn't mutant. It isn't even magical.

It's everything, every gene, every instinct, every shard of Magik's dying memories, all colliding inside her at once.

The Soulsword burns in her hands, scorching the air with violet flame. Her silver hair lifts in a weightless halo, glowing like moonlit fire.

Her eyes flicker uncontrollably, changing between; pink, blue, gold, and white, all the colors representing her DNA donors powers. Her eyes finally shines a violet-silver, representing her resent upgrade from Magik's DNA.

Her knees buckle.

Her breath comes in sharp, panicked bursts. "I can't breathe."

She clutches her chest as the Hex Node blazes beneath her sternum.

Elle shouts from across the courtyard, "Vex, stay with us!"

But Vex doesn't hear her.

The world has become a river of memories that she never lived, pains she did not feel, and choices she did not make.

She doesn't know who she is. She doesn't know what she is. She only knows the sword.

---

The Hex Node Awakens

A luminous projection bursts from her chest,

a spiraling helix of DNA strands woven with arcane sigils and nanite light.

The Ximera Core speaks in a voice that vibrates through bone:

[XIMERA CORE // HEX NODE ASCENSION]

Source of Catalyst DNA: MUTANT SORCERESS — ILLYANA RASPUTIN

Status: CRITICAL INTEGRATION

Stability: 41% and falling

Initiating Arcane-Genetic Merge...

Initiating Neural Reinforcement...

Initiating Soul-Binding Protocol...

Her heartbeat stutters.

Her skin glows with veins of soft magenta light that spread down her arms, across her hands, into the blade itself.

The Soulsword's runes flare and shift, changing shape, changing meaning, and

changing allegiance.

The sword chose her. And the Core reacts.

---

The Transformation

Vex rises slowly, trembling violently as the world bends around her.

Elle and Stryke rush toward her, but a shockwave of arcane energy pulses out and forces them back.

Shade shouts, "She's overloaded, don't touch her!"

Bul shields his face as violet fire crackles across the ruins.

Alloy hovers protectively nearby, magnetic fields warping the debris away from her collapse zone.

But this is Vex's moment. Only her body, her heart, her fear, matter now.

The Hex Node continues:

Magic Affinity: ACCEPTED

Soul Weapon Synchronization: COMPLETE

Memory Echo Distribution: RESTRICTED

Teleportation Matrix: LOCKED — Higher Stability Required

A second shockwave tears through the courtyard, this one colder, sharper, almost musical.

Vex gasps as her bones feel like they're being rewritten. The air warps, and shadows slither along the ground and rise like smoke around her feet.

She is becoming something new, something magical, something born from sacrifice.

Her hair turns weightless, shimmering with streaks of pink, blue, gold, and white, a crown of multicolored light.

Her body glows along her veins, threads of magenta arcane power running like molten silver beneath her skin.

She lifts the Soulsword again, barely able to hold it, but it holds her.

And the sword sings.

---

First Emotion

It wasn't fear, nor confusion, or grief.

Her voice breaks as she whispers: "She… saved me. She saved them. Why do I feel."

She doesn't have a word for the sensation crushing her chest. Was it pain, loss, love, or sorrow?

She was born without a childhood, without memories, without a past. But now, Magik's last moments pulse through her mind like a heartbeat.

For the first time since awakening. Vex cries, her tears glow violet. The energy around her softens, not vanishing, but bending into something gentler, controlled, alive.

And in that moment of clarity, she knows who she must become.

---

The Reapers React

The three Reapers, previously staggered by the explosion of arcane power, stabilize and resume their advance. Their cores flicker with shifting runes, analyzing her new energy signature.

The Magic-Assimilation Reaper steps forward, absorbing light into its claws. Its body rearranges into a new form, sleeker, sharper, optimized for magic execution.

"Target: Arcane Mutant," its voice rumbles in a corrupted mechanical tone. It charges.

Vex lifts the Soulsword, still shaking, still half-aware, but instinct moves for her.

Elle shouts, "Vex, move!" But Vex doesn't move.

The sword moves. In a single, impossibly fast motion, the Soulsword draws a circle of violet fire in the air. A rip of energy opens, a short-range portal, and the Reaper lunges through it. Only to appear behind itself, crashing into its own allies.

The team stares.

Shade breathes, "She, teleported the enemy."

Vex stumbles, nearly collapsing. Her voice shakes, "I didn't mean to, I just thought and the sword acted."

---

The Final Push

Alloy slams into the stunned Reaper trio, pinning them in a twisted mass of metal. Bul crushes one under sheer force. Stryke fires rapid precision blasts, carving weak points.

Elle drops a gust of frigid wind, freezing damaged joints. Surge darts beneath them in a burst of kinetic explosions, severing key limbs, and Shade phases through the last one, disrupting internal circuitry.

The courtyard falls silent.

Only Vex sways, holding the sword, breathing hard, eyes dimming.

Stryke approaches carefully. "Vex, can you hear me?"

She nods, barely. "I… think so."

Elle takes her hand. "You're okay now."

Vex looks at her. Her voice is soft, frightened, like a newborn. "No, Nothing is okay."

Her glowing eyes turn toward the north. "I know where the resistance is."

---

The Aftershock

The courtyard lies in stillness now, the kind of stillness that feels like the earth holding its breath.

The Reapers are gone. The smoke is fading.

But Vex stands trembling in the center of it all, her body illuminated by faint magenta veins of magic.

Elle keeps an arm around her back, steadying her.

Stryke kneels beside them, scanning Vex with the cool focus and tactical instincts.

Shade clings to reappeared solidity beside him, calm but tense.

Alloy lands with a metallic thud nearby, wings folding. Bul cracks his knuckles, muttering, "That was, somethin'."

Surge paces a few feet away, still charged with leftover kinetic energy, explosions popping under his boots as he tries to burn off the adrenaline.

But Vex barely feels the world around her.

Her mind is still full of light and screams and dying memories that were never hers.

"Vex," he says softly, "look at me."

She does. Her eyes shift, silver to violet to pink, before settling into a dim, exhausted gray.

Her voice cracks. "I think I felt her die."

Elle squeezes her shoulder. "Magik saved you. She wanted you to have something, she thought you could carry."

Vex closes her eyes with a pained inhale.

"She didn't even know me."

Stryke's voice drops: "She didn't have to."

---

The System Intervenes

A soft hum thrums inside Vex's chest.

Her Hex Node glows faintly beneath her skin, forming runic patterns that pulse gently instead of violently now.

The Ximera Core speaks in a low, resonant tone:

[XIMERA CORE — STATUS: STABILIZING]

Catalyst DNA: SYNCHRONIZED

Primary Hex Node: ACTIVE

Magic Affinity: ESTABLISHED

Soulsword Compatibility: OPTIMAL

Memory Echoes: PARTIAL RETENTION

Emotional Overload: REGULATING

Neural Integrity: RESTORED

Vex shivers as the system quiets inside her.

"I can hear her memories still," she whispers.

"Not all. Just, pieces. Children she saved. People she fought beside.

They're fading, but, pieces stay."

Shade steps forward, voice calm.

"Instincts blended with your own. Rogue's DNA, this is how it works. You didn't steal her. She gave them to you."

Elle nods slowly, gently brushing Vex's hair from her face. "And because of that, you know something important."

Vex nods. Her jaw tightens. "Yes."

---

Magik's Final Gift

She looks north, to the melted horizon, shimmering under a faint red glow.

"I know where the resistance is," she says.

"A sanctuary. Underground. A vault full of signatures, mutants, children, fighters."

She swallows hard. "Magik died to get them there."

Surge brightens instantly. "Finally, something to hit!"

Bul snorts. "Always thinkin' about fightin', aren't ya?"

"Hell yeah," Surge fires back. "It's what I do."

Stryke rises to his feet, voice shifting into command mode. "We move soon. But not yet. Vex needs time to stabilize."

Vex shakes her head fiercely. "No. I'm stable." A beat. "I can function. I can guide us."

Elle studies her for a long moment. Her expression softens. "Then we follow your lead."

Vex blinks in surprise. "You trust me?"

Elle smiles gently. "We're a family now. You earned it."

Her chest tightens, a strange, powerful feeling blooming there.

Is this, belonging?

---

The Soulsword Reacts

The Soulsword, still clenched in her hand, flickers with faint violet flame. Vex looks down at it. The blade hums softly, harmonizing with her heartbeat.

Stryke notes the connection. "It responds to you," he murmurs. "Almost like, it's alive."

"It is," Vex whispers. "It's made of her soul.

And now it's, bound to mine."

Alloy tilts his head. "That sounds, heavy."

"It is."

The team falls into a respectful silence.

Surge stops pacing, Bul folds his arms solemnly, and Shade lowers her gaze.

Magik died here. Her ashes are still scattered across the cracked stone.

Vex presses her palm to the ground. "Thank you," she whispers.

A faint ripple of violet light pulses outward from her hand, not magic, not power, just grief.

---

Time to Move

Elle rises to her feet. "We need shelter before nightfall."

Stryke nods. "We'll regroup. Then plan the path to the resistance base."

Bul cracks his neck. "Hope they have food."

Shade smirks. "Your stomach is your superpower."

Surge flashes a grin. "And my fists."

Alloy lifts off the ground slightly. "I'll scout ahead."

Vex moves to stand, but her knees wobble.

Elle catches her. "You okay?"

Vex nods, breath shaky. "I think so. I just… feel so many things at once."

"Welcome to being alive," Elle says quietly.

Vex looks up at her. "I like it."
