In the midst of a small altercation between two Alphas over an unexpected rejection, I managed to slip away from Lucian. His proximity was suffocating me; I don't know what was happening to me tonight, but having him so close was provoking thoughts not befitting a lady.
I walked quickly toward the restrooms as indicated by a service attendant, but on the way I stopped when I saw an open balcony overlooking the surrounding forest, which was currently covered in snow. The sun had just begun to descend, and with my eyes closed, I received the sweet warmth it emanated.
The fresh air hit my cheeks and I shivered slightly; the contrast with the heat I felt from Lucian's proximity was overwhelming.
I leaned on the railing and closed my eyes, letting the wind caress my face. For a moment, everything seemed to stop—the murmurs from the hall behind me, the accumulated tensions, even Lucian's overwhelming presence in my mind.
But the calm didn't last long.
