Chapter 9 - "Gunfire"

Yuri groaned as he blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights of the school hallway. His head throbbed, a dull drum in time with the ringing of the locker doors and morning announcements. Haru, slumped beside him, muttered something unintelligible and clutched a water bottle like it was a life raft.

"Don't tell me this is… payback for dancing too much last night," Yuri muttered, frowning.

Haru blinked slowly, then gave a lopsided grin. "Maybe."

Yuri rolled his eyes, opening his locker with a practiced motion. That familiar little thrill flickered in his chest—something had been waiting for him almost every morning for weeks now. That red envelope. Just as crisp, and paper-smelling as the last time.

He pulled it out, careful not to crumple it.

"Hey, how's your day?"

Yuri smiled faintly. It was simple, unassuming, but it always made him feel lighter.

His grin widened, even as his head pounded. That one had arrived yesterday morning. Simple encouragement, like someone had read his mind, like someone knew exactly what he needed.

He glanced around the hall, squinting at the mass of students shuffling past. His curiosity had grown over the weeks, slowly twisting into obsession. Who was leaving these notes? He had searched the hallways, tried to catch anyone sneaking around his locker, even asked Mika and Yuna if they had seen anything suspicious, but there had been nothing.

Nothing.

Just like yesterday. Just like the day before.

Haru nudged him with his elbow. "Still smiling at a piece of paper?"

Yuri tilted his head, holding the note in front of him. "It's not just a piece of paper."

Haru snorted. "Yeah, yeah. You're in love with mystery paper person. Got it." He teased, but his words were prouder than usual. Maybe he was happy about Yuri being in love with this person, but why would he be? Unless...

Yuri rolled his eyes, trying to mask the flutter in his chest at the thought of someone out there, caring enough to write these little messages. Someone was watching, paying attention, and maybe… just maybe… it was someone close.

Lunch rolled around with the usual chaos, half-drunken students from last night's dance still moving sluggishly through the halls. Yuri and Haru were sitting together under the shaded walkway outside the cafeteria, soaking in the mid-morning sun, when a sharp, sudden bang split the air.

At first, everyone froze. Then it came again. And again.

Gunshots.

The world narrowed to a tunnel of instinct. Haru grabbed Yuri's hand without hesitation, yanking him toward the side door of the building.

"Stay low!" he yelled, pulling him behind a row of lockers.

Yuri's heart was hammering. He felt the sting of panic, the rush of adrenaline, but also the strange, grounding warmth of Haru's hand in his. They crouched, pressed together, listening as the shots echoed in the hall. Screams layered over the sharp pops of gunfire. Students were diving for cover. A few teachers shouted instructions.

Yuri peered cautiously around the lockers. One of the attackers—he didn't even think about why—looked young, almost like someone from their year, but he didn't know. He just saw the gun, the cold focus. He and Haru ducked lower.

"This way!" Haru whispered urgently, tugging him toward the maintenance exit.

They moved fast, ducking behind the recycling bins and low walls, weaving through the chaos. Yuri's chest burned from running, from fear, from the need to survive, but he stayed close to Haru. Somehow, he had a map of instinct, of knowing which corners to hug, which doors to slip through.

Eventually, the gunfire receded—or at least moved far enough away that they could hear nothing but distant echoes. They huddled behind a low wall in the courtyard, gasping for air, hearts hammering in unison.

"You… okay?" Haru whispered, brushing a lock of damp hair from Yuri's forehead.

Yuri nodded, though his hands were shaking. "Yeah… thanks to you."

Haru smiled, but there was a tense set to his shoulders. "We're lucky."

Yuri nodded again, but his thoughts were elsewhere. He felt the crumpled note in his pocket, the one that had arrived yesterday. And suddenly, everything clicked. The handwriting, the small quirks in the folds, the timing…

He turned to Haru slowly. "It's you."

Haru's brow lifted in surprise. "What?"

"The notes," Yuri said, gripping his hand. "All of them. You've been… leaving them for me."

Haru's face softened, his tension cracking into a quiet, almost shy smile. "I didn't want to make it obvious. I just… I wanted to be there for you. Even before…" he glanced around, still aware of lingering chaos from the lunch corridor. "…Even before today."

Yuri's chest tightened. He felt a wave of warmth that made the fear from minutes ago feel distant, replaced with disbelief and joy. "You… you've been beside me this whole time. Camouflaged. Watching. Caring."

Haru nodded. "I wanted to see you smile, even on bad mornings. Even before we… started dating."

Yuri blinked at him. He felt like he was seeing him fully, all at once, the mystery behind the notes finally visible. His heart pounded. "You're incredible."

"Yeah, I know," Haru teased softly, brushing the hair behind his ear. Then his tone softened, his smile genuine and warm. "But… you're incredible too."

For a long moment, they simply held each other, letting the world feel impossibly quiet after the chaos of gunfire and panic.

Yuri chuckled, shaking his head. "All this time, and I never realized it."

Haru leaned in, his forehead resting against his. "Maybe it was easier this way. I wanted you to choose the mystery first, to figure out if you cared. And I knew… you always would."

Yuri smiled, pulling him into a tighter embrace. "I can't believe I doubted it. I can't believe I doubted you."

He grinned, playful despite everything. "You're lucky you didn't die in lunch."

He laughed breathlessly. "Lucky, yeah. And… lucky to have you."

Haru's eyes softened, and he pressed a gentle kiss to his temple. "Always."

Yuri, caught up in the intensity of relief and love, pressed a hand to her cheek. "I… I want to keep you close. Always."

Haru smiled, resting his forehead against his. "You already do. You've always had me."

The sun beat down softly, warming their backs as they walked back toward the school entrance, hands intertwined. The echoes of the day—the panic, the gunfire, the chaos—felt distant now, replaced by the warmth of their bond.

And as they moved through the hallways, past the scattered students and teachers still shaken but alive, Yuri realized that some mysteries were worth the wait. Some bonds, carefully nurtured, could survive fear, could survive chaos. Some hearts, no matter how long it takes, could finally find the courage to meet.

And he wasn't letting Haru go. Not ever.
