Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14 — Echoes in a New Home

POV: Carlisle

Lucian slept in what had once been Renesmee's childhood room.

Esme insisted on it—soft blankets, warm lamps, the gentlest space in the house. But comfort did not erase the shadows he carried inside him.

The family gathered in the main room. Rosalie paced. Jasper stood guard near the window. Alice flickered, lost in stuttering visions she couldn't hold onto.

"We need to understand what the Volturi did to him," I began. "And what they intended him to become."

Jasper spoke first.

"He's faking most of the conditioning."

I felt the room still around me.

Esme touched her chest. "Faking…?"

"Not the trauma," Jasper clarified. "That's real. But the obedience? The submission? He puts on a mask when he thinks he has to."

Alice whispered:

"He learned to shrink so he wouldn't be killed."

Edward nodded grimly.

"He wasn't the only hybrid child they attempted to create. He remembers the others. Or enough of them. The ones who weren't strong enough… didn't survive."

Rosalie's jaw tightened until her teeth creaked.

"They murdered children."

Bella closed her eyes, jaw trembling.

A soft sound came from the hallway.

Tiny steps.

We turned.

Lucian stood in the doorway, hair rumpled, eyes wide and shimmering with fear he was trying very hard to hide.

He had heard us.

Again.

I approached slowly.

"Lucian," I said gently. "You're safe here."

But his voice cracked:

"You think I lie."

Alice fell to her knees in front of him instantly.

"No. We think you survived."

Lucian's lips trembled.

"I didn't want to hear. I just… woke up. And the voices were loud. And then I heard my name and I—"

He choked.

Bella approached him carefully, like approaching a frightened fawn.

"No one will punish you for anything. Ever. Not here."

Lucian blinked rapidly.

Then his head snapped sideways—toward Leo.

Leo had stepped into the room silently, as he always did.The quietest of us.The one we adopted decades ago after he awoke alone and terrified in the Yukon.

Lucian stared at him.

No—through him.

"You shine," Lucian whispered.

Leo froze.

"I don't— I don't have powers like that," Leo said awkwardly.

"Yes, you do," Lucian murmured. "They're sleeping."

Lucian lifted a trembling hand.

Leo hesitantly mirrored him.

Their fingertips hovered inches apart—

And the air rippled.

A soft vibration shimmered through the room, stirring the curtains, brushing my skin like a warm pulse. A faint golden shimmer appeared between their hands.

Alice inhaled sharply.

Jasper stiffened.

Even Edward leaned forward, shocked.

Lucian's voice was small but certain.

"You hear energy."He nodded to Leo."And I see it."

Leo stared at him like someone who'd heard his real name for the first time.

The glow faded slowly.

Leo whispered:

"You awakened it."

Lucian shook his head.

"No. I just woke you up."

Silence held all of us.

Then Lucian turned back to the room, eyes heavy but clear.

"They made other hybrids. They made them try to shine."His voice faltered."When they didn't… they threw them away."

No one breathed.

"I didn't want to be thrown away. So I pretended."He looked at every one of us—one by one."I pretend to survive. And now I pretend to escape."

Edward whispered, horrified:

"He's been resisting Aro for years."

Lucian stepped closer to me, small but suddenly steady.

"Aro thinks he controls my mind."A faint defiance flickered behind his eyes."But he doesn't."

Leo spoke quietly, standing behind him like a shadow.

"You saw something when our powers touched, didn't you?"

Lucian nodded.

"I saw a place where I get to live."Then, softer:"I think that place… is here."

Esme broke first, her voice thick with emotion.

"Then this is your home, Lucian."

Rosalie stepped closer.

"And you're never going back to them."

Lucian swallowed.

For the first time since we found him—

He believed it.
