It wasn't harsh; it was a soft smile and a gentle voice, just like always. What was different was that the green eyes, which were usually the epitome of the peaceful Mediterranean Sea, had darkened slightly like a stormy meadow.
Once again, despite the unchanging harmless countenance, Eugene couldn't help but swallow hard. All his life, Eugene had never been scolded by his Dad—for obvious reasons—so, while Ian didn't exactly look angry, Eugene couldn't help but feel nervous.
"Umm...now?" Eugene asked quietly.
"Do you want to wait for Hannah?"
Eugene lowered his head in reflex, his shoulders shrinking. All he could do was follow his dad to the couch, hesitatingly, explaining what he did that day. Of course, he tried to smooth it over as much as possible, leaving out any details of the altercation and violence, and simply saying they were arguing.
