Chapter 22 - Steven’s Guilt

As soon as Steven saw the familiar façade of the old house, he was overwhelmed by memory. This was the place where he had spent six years of his secret life. This was the house that held his deepest, most painful secrets.

"Daisy!!! My love—" Steven murmured, the name a ghost on his lips.

A flashback seized him 15 years back: "Please don't leave me, please, Steven! I love you so much, please, please!" Daisy begged him, tears streaming down her face.

Steven's voice was hard, filled with fear. "Daisy, my wife Nadia knows about our relationship. If she finds out I have a five-year-old child, it will be a huge problem! If her powerful father knows about my affair with you, he would kill me!"

"But you never said you had a wife! And you only told me a month ago that you were married!" Even though I got married to you. "Now you're telling me our 6 years relationship is just an affair? Is this because you never wanted to see your son?" Daisy accused.

"Whatever you want to think, just think I can't continue our relationship. Take this blank cheque," Steven insisted, pushing a cheque toward her.

Daisy let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Oh, wow, thank you! You're giving this as the prize for every night you stayed and slept with me? Is that what this is for? If I wanted money, doing this—" she gestured to the house and herself—"then why did I stay with you six years and have a baby from you? Otherwise, I should have searched for someone daily to get money!"

"Daisy!" Steven roared, furious that she'd touched his pride.

"Oh, you can't imagine your affair sleeping with others, right? Then don't leave me!" Daisy challenged.

"If you want to sleep, just sleep with anyone. Goodbye!" Steven spat, turning and walking straight toward his car.

"Steven! If you go like this, I'm going to die!" Daisy screamed.

Steven drove away, leaving her alone and Daisy running back inside the house.

The memories brought tears to Steven's eyes as he stared at the house. Is she still here? He tried to rationalize going through the gate.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed. "Sir, it's already too late! You must be here as soon as possible!" his manager said urgently.

"Okay, I'll be there," Steven replied, ending the call.

Maybe she'll be alright with her own life. It's the past now. I have my own family; I need to concern myself with that, Steven thought, suppressing the guilt. He got back into his car and drove straight toward the office, leaving his secret—and his son—behind once more.

Back at the hospital, Lucian was preparing to leave.

"Aerin, please take care of Kai. Even if he acts uncontrollable, you need to be careful—" Lucian tried to caution her.

"Ahhh, I know what to do. It's normal for me, don't worry, Lucian!" Aerin interrupted, smiling brightly. "I have to thank you, yes, because this time, I'll become so close to Kai!"

Lucian offered a weak, warm smile, concealing his dread.

"Ah, Lucian, shall we go?" Rowan asked, slipping his arm around Lucian's shoulders.

"Ah, but your father still isn't here!" Lucian worried.

"He sent a car for us. He said he'll be late to home. We can go home, come, Lucian," Nadia said kindly.

"Ah, what about your outfit? How will you manage?" Aerin asked, noticing Lucian's torn clothing under Rowan's jacket.

"Don't worry, Aerin. I already went back to his house and took some clothes. I even got some of Kai's clothes; they're in his ward," Rowan said quickly.

"Ah, thank you! You're so quick!" Aerin complimented.

Rowan and Nadia ushered Lucian toward the car. Lucian hugged Aerin one last time. "Be careful, especially since you're ill too. Call Aunt Rosy as fast as you can," he insisted.

"Yes, I'll call my mom now. You can go safely."

Aerin watched them leave, then went into Kai's ward and called her mother to come to the hospital.

The sound of her voice stirred Kai. His eyes slowly opened, and when he saw Aerin, he started breathing heavily.

"Ohh, calm down, calm down, Kai! Are you fine?" Aerin rushed to his side. "Ah, actually, I tried so hard to get you to the hospital! Thank God my driver helped me to pick you up from that house!" Aerin lied, just as Lucian had instructed.

"You got me here!?" Kai asked, shocked and confused.

"Yeah, I'm the one who got you here! I'm taking treatment here, and the doctor said you're a regular patient to him?" Aerin said, fishing for more information.

"Did he tell about my illness?" Kai demanded.

"Ohhh, that's normal. Even I suffered from something almost like that! That's not much; don't worry!" Aerin tried to cool his head, minimizing his CPTD.

If she picked me up here, then where's Lucian? Kai wondered. He suddenly remembered the violence he'd inflicted on Lucian at the old house, just like six months ago. His hands began to shiver violently. How did Lucian leave me there? Did I do something bad again to him? He desperately searched his fragmented memories.

Then, he remembered Rowan's strong figure and the painful punch.

"That's him! That's definitely him! He took my Lucian away! He took my Lucian away!" Kai screamed, his focus shifting completely.

Aerin saw his hands shaking. "Ohhh, Kai, your hand is shivering! Kai! Look here! You're in the hospital! Calm down, calm down! I'm with you! I'll be with you!" Aerin said, holding his trembling hand.

"Will you be with me!?" Kai asked, his eyes desperate.

"Yes, I'm with you! Calm down now..." The raw intensity of Aerin's promise stabilized him.

"Okay, now take some rest," Aerin said, fixing his pillow. Kai slowly drifted back to sleep.

Aerin slumped into a chair. Ufff, he's too much when he's uncontrollable—even more than me! "He took Lucian away"? Why did he say that? Who took Lucian away!? Aerin thought, her mind twisting with suspicion.
