Chapter 11 - Land of the Dead

Silence blanketed Rusty Town.

The desert wind howled across the steel skeletons of the city, carrying dust and tension in equal measure. There were no voices now—only the low growl of engines and the metallic clang of last-minute repairs from the ranks of outlaw racers readying for what was to come.

Kirana stood before the barracks beside Zephyr, eyes fixed on the barren horizon. Her hand gripped the newly repaired bow tight, knuckles pale under the desert sun. Behind her, the sound of approaching footsteps broke the silence.

Vega and Velaria appeared, both carrying something in their hands.

"Kirana. Zephyr." Vega's tone was calm but urgent.

Kirana turned, brows furrowed. "What's going on?"

Velaria raised two metallic bands, each etched with a glowing circular emblem at its core. "We've got something for you."

Zephyr's eyes narrowed. Recognition flickered. "Those are… our nano-bands?"

Vega nodded with a faint, proud smile. "You sold them off to survive here in Rusty Town. So, we tracked them down and bought them back… quietly, of course."

For a moment, Kirana could only stare, torn between disbelief and gratitude. "You two really…"

"Don't get sentimental," Velaria cut in dryly. "We didn't do it out of kindness. You'll need these. And we need you both alive."

Zephyr chuckled softly, taking the band. "You always think ahead, huh?"

"Try them on," Vega ordered. "We ran diagnostics, they should perform even better than before."

Kirana and Zephyr slipped the nano-bands onto their wrists. As their fingers brushed the emblems, a soft mechanical hum filled the air. Silver particles spread across their bodies, forming sleek armor that shimmered with faint blue light.

"Whoa…" Zephyr exhaled, glancing at the armor's fluid plating. "This feels… smoother. Stronger."

Kirana looked at Vega and Velaria, her eyes glinting. "I… don't even know what to say. Thank you."

Vega patted her shoulder with a small smirk. "Save your gratitude for after the fight. Survive first."

Velaria grinned. "And don't break it again. We're out of cash for round two."

Before anyone could respond, a deep metallic rumble shook the barracks.

All heads turned as the massive steel doors opened, revealing a towering combat mech emerging from the shadows. Its armor gleamed with reinforced plating, twin rotary cannons mounted on each arm, and a cockpit glowing with a crimson interface.

From inside, Kaelar's voice boomed through the comms. "Well? What do you think? Ready for the grand party?"

Zephyr smirked. "That explains why you've been missing all day. Playing with your new toy, huh?"

"This isn't a toy," Kaelar replied with a hint of pride. "This is a walking storm. We'll need every bit of its firepower soon enough."

Kraken stepped to the center of the barracks, raising his arm high. His deep voice echoed through the metallic hall.

"Listen up! The storm's coming, and Edena thinks they can crush us. But Rusty Town doesn't bow to anyone. We fight, or we die standing!"

A thunder of cheers erupted. The outlaws raised their weapons, their battle cries shaking the steel walls. Kraken's scarred face broke into a fierce grin—he could taste the fire in their spirits.

"Kirana! Zephyr! Aelina!" he barked. "You're with me on the front line. Let's show Edena what happens when they mess with Rusty Town!"

From the back, Aelina stepped forward. Her armor pulsed with faint blue veins of light, her presence radiating calm power.

"I'll make sure Rusty Town stands," she said firmly, voice cutting through the noise like a blade. "You can count on me."

Cheers roared again, louder this time, echoing across the hangar and into the dying light of the desert.

For the first time in days, the air didn't feel heavy with despair.

It felt like hope, defiant, and ready to fight back.

Outside Rusty Town, the desert lay cloaked in silence. Only the roar of engines and the metallic click of weapons broke through the stillness. In the distance, the desert sky began to change color, a sign that the Edena forces were drawing near.

Kraken stood at the front, flanked by Aelina, Kirana, Zephyr, and Kaelar in his towering combat mech. Behind them stretched a ragtag army of outlaws and racers, each astride heavily modified vehicles, engines rumbling like caged beasts waiting to be unleashed.

Vega and Velaria took position atop a crumbling outpost, sniper rifles ready in their hands.

"The Edena are close," Velaria murmured, peering through her scope.

Kraken raised his arm, his booming voice cutting through the rising wind. "Rusty Town! You know what to do! Today, we don't just survive, we show them what real resistance looks like!"

A thunderous cheer erupted across the ranks.

"Rusty Town!" Kraken roared again, grinning madly. "Attack!!!"

Engines screamed to life. The desert exploded with motion and fury as Rusty Town's defenders surged forward, colliding headlong with the invading Edena. Kraken stood atop his armored truck, manning a heavy gun, laughter echoing with every burst of fire.

"Hah! Come on, tin soldiers! Let's see what you've got!" he bellowed, bullets tearing through the sand and ripping into advancing Edena skimmers.

Above, Aelina streaked through the sky, her energy wings flaring brilliant blue. She dove into an enemy aircraft, cleaving its wing clean off before spinning away and firing a burst of plasma rounds into another. Each explosion lit the night like fireworks of defiance.

On the ground, Zephyr moved with impossible speed. His chain-blade whirled crimson arcs through the air, cutting down armored troopers that dared approach the front line. Every strike was fluid, precise, like a deadly dance honed by years of war.

Kirana hovered above the dunes with thrusters on her boots, loosing arrow after arrow from her plasma bow. Each shot hit its mark with unerring accuracy, detonating in sharp bursts that threw Edena vehicles off course.

Then Kaelar's mech came crashing down in the middle of the enemy formation. The impact shook the earth, tossing Edena soldiers aside like rag dolls. His metal fists swung wide, smashing through vehicles and scattering debris in every direction.

From his truck, Kraken couldn't help but laugh harder. "Hahaha! Now this, this is living!"

Inside his cockpit, Kaelar smirked and toggled his comms. "Kraken, do you even know who they are?"

"What? Who?" Kraken shouted back between gunfire.

"Zephyr and Kirana," Kaelar said. "On Earth, they were known as the Desert Ninja and the Goddess of the Wastes, legends among warriors."

Kraken paused for half a second, then let out a bark of laughter. "Hahaha! The Goddess and the Ninja, huh? This desert really does know how to bring legends together. Beautiful damn fate, isn't it?"

Kirana rolled her eyes while loosing another arrow. "Focus on the fight, Kraken."

Zephyr chuckled beside her. "Let him talk. His madness keeps the air alive."

"I heard that!" Kraken yelled over the comm. "And for the record, I like your style, both of you! You belong here!"

Amid the chaos, Aelina landed beside Kirana and Zephyr, her armor scorched and dusty but her expression unshaken.

"You two holding up?" she asked.

"Barely," Kirana admitted. "There's too many of them. We need to hit their command center—break their coordination."

Aelina nodded, scanning the horizon. "I'll find it. If I take out their command relay, the rest will fall into chaos."

"You sure you can do it alone?" Zephyr asked.

A faint smile curved her lips. "Trust me."

Without another word, Aelina shot back into the sky, leaving a trail of blue fire in her wake.

Kraken spotted a new wave of Edena vehicles cresting the dunes. "Kaelar! More incoming, they're trying to flank us!"

Kaelar rotated his mech's cannons toward the oncoming tide. "Then let's make sure they regret it."

Kirana and Zephyr exchanged a brief look, a wordless understanding forged by countless battles.

"Kirana," Zephyr said, spinning his weapon into position. "Let's remind them why legends don't die easily."

Kirana smirked. "Gladly."

The two launched forward, their combined assault carving through the Edena ranks like a storm made flesh. Behind them, the outlaws of Rusty Town roared in defiance, following their lead.

Above it all, Aelina soared toward the heart of the enemy lines, toward the gleaming core of the Edena command ship burning bright against the desert night.

The Battle for Rusty Town had begun in full, a symphony of fire, steel, and unbreakable resolve.

The battlefield blazed across the Tharros desert, smoke and dust swirling high into the burning sky. The roars of engines mixed with war cries from Rusty Town's wild racers, each one fighting with a ferocity that defied death itself. Despite the endless waves of Edena troops advancing, their spirit refused to falter.

Kaelar stood tall in the cockpit of his towering battle mech, firing relentlessly. Twin cannons thundered as he tore through Edena's armored front line, explosions reflecting in his visor. "Vega, Velaria…" he said through the comms, his voice steady despite the chaos. "I've never seen anything like this. These people… they fight as if war is their way of life."

Kraken's booming laughter broke through the static. "Ha! Damn right, Kaelar! This is the fire that keeps us alive on this hellhole of a planet! Edena thinks they know war? They've never met Rusty Town!"

A small smile tugged at Kaelar's lips. "I think I'm beginning to understand you, Kraken."

Overhead, Aelina cut through the air like a streak of light. Her energy wings flared blue as she dived, shredding through an Edena fighter and sending it spiraling in flames. She spun midair, eyes locked onto her next target, plasma rounds flying in perfect precision.

Below her, Zephyr moved like a phantom, darting across the battlefield with lightning speed. His chain spear glowed red-hot as it sliced through enemy ranks. Behind him, Kirana drew her plasma bow, loosing arrow after arrow, each shot a miniature explosion that sent vehicles erupting into fire.

"Still covering for my mistakes, Kirana?" Zephyr panted, ducking beneath enemy fire.

Kirana smirked, her eyes focused on the next shot. "If I don't watch your back, who will?"

Kraken's laughter echoed once more through the comms. "Hahaha! You two are a damn legend! I'm writing this one down in Rusty Town's history!"

Then the ground trembled.

A violent quake tore across the desert. Cracks ripped open beneath them, glowing with an eerie blue light that pulsed like the heartbeat of a dying world.

"What the hell is that? Vega, Velaria, talk to me!" Kaelar barked.

From the ridge, Vega's face went pale as she scanned the readings. "That pattern… it's not natural. It's an Edena terraforming core."

Velaria's fingers flew across her detector. "The energy's spreading fast. It's burrowing through Tharros' crust."

"Damn it…" Vega muttered, eyes wide. "If this continues, the planet won't hold. Tharros will collapse from within."

"We have to warn them, screw that, we have to move now!" Velaria shouted.

They sprinted to their ship, Vega jumping into the pilot's seat as Velaria sealed the hatch. Engines roared to life, lifting them into the storm of battle.

The cockpit flickered red with alerts as Vega scanned the sensors. "Energy levels peaking! If we don't get out now, this planet's taking us all with it!"

Velaria activated the comms. "Kaelar! Abandon the mech and get to the ship, now!"

Down below, Kaelar hesitated in his damaged mech, explosions lighting up the horizon. "Not yet! I need to buy them time to retreat!"

"Negative!" Velaria snapped. "If you die here, no one gets saved. That's an order!"

Kaelar paused, then sighed. "Fine. But we're not leaving them behind." He released his harness, hit the eject sequence, and blasted free with his jetpack.

Velaria leaned out the open ramp, reaching for him. "Kaelar! Grab my hand!"

He caught her grip, tumbling inside as the hatch sealed shut. "Let's move. The core's destabilizing fast."

Across the battlefield, Kirana and Zephyr sprinted toward the ship, the ground cracking behind them. Overhead, Aelina descended, wings flaring as she covered their retreat.

Kraken, still manning his mounted gun atop the armored truck, barked through the comms. "Hey! Sand Vipers! Time to go! Don't you dare worry about me!"

Kirana stopped at the ramp, eyes glassy with emotion. "Kraken! Come with us! We can still save you!"

He just laughed—a sound full of grit and pride. "Hahaha! This is my home, Kirana! And I've decided it'll be my grave, too!"

"Don't be stupid!" Zephyr yelled. "You don't have to die here!"

Kraken turned toward them, his face set with unshakable resolve. "I'm old, kid. Rusty Town is my life. But you... you still have a future. Don't waste it here."

Aelina landed softly on the ramp, bowing her head slightly. "Thank you, Kraken… for everything."

He nodded, smiling through the dust. "Go, Aelina. The world still needs you."

As the ship lifted off, Kraken watched it disappear into the burning sky. "Kirana, Zephyr…" he murmured, gripping his gun one last time. "Take care of each other out there. And never forget… Rusty Town lives on in you."

Inside the ship, Kirana clutched her comms tightly, her voice trembling. "Thank you, Kraken. We won't forget. Rusty Town will live… in our hearts."

Outside, Kraken stood tall atop his war truck, gripping his heavy machine gun with one hand. His voice roared over the chaos, fierce and proud. "This is our end, but we'll make damn sure they remember our name!" He aimed his gaze toward the Edena troops and bellowed one last war cry. "Rusty Town! Forward! Hahaha!"

The roar of the Rusty Town raiders echoed across the battlefield, defiant even in the face of certain death.

From above, Vega's ship climbed rapidly through the burning sky, engines screaming as it tore away from the doomed planet. On the cockpit screen, the terraforming device's energy readings spiked off the charts.

A blinding blue light erupted from Tharros' surface.

The ship lurched violently as the shockwave struck. Kirana, Zephyr, and the others turned toward the viewport, watching in silent horror as the planet's crust split apart, revealing the blazing core beneath. Shattered metal and sand spiraled into space, carried by the dying breath of a world.

"Rusty Town... Kraken..." Kirana whispered.

Aelina placed a steady hand on her shoulder, silent but resolute.

Velaria turned away from the viewport, her voice low. "We made it out... but at a terrible cost."

Vega nodded faintly. "Tharros is gone, but their spirit will live on."

The ship sped into the void, leaving behind only fragments and memories. Inside, the silence was heavy—each of them lost in thought, mourning the world they left behind.

Outside, what remained of Tharros drifted in endless darkness, massive shards of rock and metal suspended in the vacuum, glowing with the eerie blue light of the planet's exposed core. The ruins shimmered like ghosts beneath the stars.

Then, from the depths of hyperspace, streaks of red and blue light appeared, the arrival of Edena's extraction fleet. Gigantic mining vessels emerged one by one, like predators drawn to the scent of blood. Their mechanical arms extended, latching onto the remains of Tharros. The soundless grinding of metal filled the void as they harvested what was left of the planet.

Far beyond the wreckage, Vega's ship sailed through hyperspace toward Earth. The hum of the engines was the only sound that filled the cabin.

Kirana sat by the window, her eyes distant. "I can still hear Kraken's voice... Rusty Town... all of them..."

Zephyr sat beside her, quiet but watchful. "They chose their fate, Kirana. Kraken knew what he was doing. He died protecting his home."

In the cockpit, Vega and Velaria focused on the controls in silence, a silence that spoke of grief, guilt, and grim resolve.

Aelina stood behind them, her gaze fixed on the holographic star map. "This is just the beginning. The Edena won't stop. They'll move on to the next world—and the next." Her tone was calm, but beneath it burned quiet fury.

Velaria looked back at her. "Then we make them pay. With you on our side, they'll think twice before starting another war."

Aelina said nothing. Her eyes stayed on the map, unwavering.

Vega tightened her grip on the controls. "We can't keep running. It's time to think about how to stop them... for good."

Velaria nodded. "But for now, we regroup. We go home. We rebuild."

The ship streaked through hyperspace, leaving a glowing trail of light behind. Each of them carried the weight of loss, but also the spark of defiance.

Tharros was gone.

But its fire lived on.

And somewhere in the dark, amid the ruins of the fallen world, the Edena continued their harvest, unaware that a storm was already forming beyond the stars.
