Chapter 6 - 6

Sofia

"You're not doing it right," I say, chuckling

He throws his pen at me. "Xavier!" I exclaim half–heartedly. He simply shrugs innocently before trying his best to ignore me while writing – attempting to write – his biology presentation.

The day he found me in the hall, an alliance was formed. A friendship blossomed out of unforeseen circumstances. Ever since that day, we've been hanging out together almost every other day after school. Today, like any other since the last two weeks, we were hanging out in his room, both busy with our various school assignments.

I'm on my back, legs resting against the headboard; pen in my mouth and book raised above me. My hair has long since forgotten its style, a bun, and is sprawled over the bed, taking up half the space and narrowly avoiding my eyes.

After being fed up with the equation I can't seem to solve, I look over my shoulder.

Seeing him scratch his head for the hundredth time, I decide to help him out of the goodness of my heart.

Several attempts are made, and each is a flop.

I'm getting bored

Seeing me stand up from my crouched position next to him, he arches an eyebrow, silently asking where I'm going to

"Relax, I'm just going to get some water," I reply, making my way to his bedroom door.

Opening his fridge, I stare blankly at the assortment of different water bottles. "Who needs so many different water bottles?"

After what seems like forever, I finally decide on picking a familiar one.

I'm about to head back up, but inevitably turn back around. "I'm sure he'd be parched as well", and with that, I walk back to the kitchen to get another glass for Xavier. With two glasses and a bottle of water in my hand, I finally made my way back up the stairs, at least I wanted to.

Standing in my way is someone I wasn't even expecting to see since he isn't home whenever I come over, Daniel.

What I've heard from my conversations with Xavier, Daniel is living with him for the rest of the school year. "Oh, hey Sofia," he smiles at me warmly.

That smile.

"Oh, hey," I'm basically stuttering, "I wasn't expecting to see you home", I can feel my legs shaking, barely holding me up. "Yeah, well, I'm here now," he scratches the back of his head sheepishly. "Well, if you'd excuse me" –

"I was kinda hoping we could talk", he cuts me off, blocking my path with his foot on purpose.

I can feel my breathing change. Dear God, not now.

"I was wondering where you were," a voice from the top of the stairs catches my attention. My prayers are answered. Xavier's voice instantly calms my nerves down, and my breathing stabilizes. I don't even notice him walking until his standing right next to me.

"What's taking so long?" he asks while prying the glass cups, which I didn't know I was holding so tightly, out of my hand. I don't even have a chance to respond because Daniel ends up doing the talking.

"We were just talking about some things and got carried away," he smiles at me.

That smile.

"Yeah, it wasn't anything too important, just catching up", I say, smiling innocently back at him, trying my very best to calm my pounding heart. What's wrong with me?

"Well, dear cousin, I'm beat. If you'd please excuse me", he gives a sarcastic bow and dashes up the stairs. I heave a heavy sigh and turn to face Xavier.

"All right, how far did you go before you got stumped?" I ask, knowing that he was way too focused on his work to come looking for me just for a glass of water. "Ouch!" he places a hand over his heart, "how sure are you that I didn't come because I was missing your company?" he adds, all the while grinning. I let out a laugh at the sight before shaking my head and heading upstairs, throwing my reply over my shoulder, "If you have time to miss me, you have time to finish up your presentation."

"Kill me now". He mumbles before walking up the stairs behind me.
