Chapter 68: Preparations for War - Part 1

POV: Andrea

The convoy stretches along rutted Georgia road—twelve vehicles carrying 120 civilians toward Prison's fortifications while fighters remain behind manning defenses that might become their tombs.

"Leaving him. Leaving our home. Carrying our child toward safety while Scott stays to coordinate defense against enemies who've allied specifically to destroy everything we've built. Logic says evacuate, protect the baby, trust capable people to fight. Heart says stand beside him regardless of pregnancy's complications."

Andrea's hand rests on stomach's swell—four months, unmistakably pregnant, physically compromising combat effectiveness enough that arguing against evacuation would be selfish rather than brave.

[EVACUATION: DAY 1 OF 5]

[CIVILIANS RELOCATING: 120 TOTAL]

[DESTINATION: PRISON FORTIFICATION]

[FIGHTERS REMAINING: 95 DISTRIBUTED]

[TIMELINE: 12 DAYS UNTIL ASSAULT]

Scott stands beside their vehicle, his hand joining hers on their child between them. Neither speaks—words feel inadequate for goodbye that might be permanent.

POV: Scott

Scott's System displays logistics ensuring evacuees aren't tracked by enemy scouts, but conscious mind focuses on Andrea's face memorizing details in case this becomes last time.

"Sending her away. Protecting our child by separating our family. Tactical necessity that feels like abandonment despite rationality underlying the decision. She's safer at Prison than Haven, but safe is relative concept when war's approaching."

"Come back," Andrea states rather than requests, the declaration carrying authority that doesn't acknowledge alternatives.

"Always," Scott promises, knowing commitment might be beyond his control but making it anyway because some vows matter more than probability.

Their kiss is desperate and brief—other families waiting for similar farewells, convoy schedule demanding adherence, emotions threatening to overwhelm tactical discipline. Then Andrea's climbing into vehicle, and Scott's watching convoy roll toward horizon while Haven empties of everyone except fighters choosing to defend rather than flee.

POV: Carol

Carol coordinates Prison's transformation into refugee center with efficiency masking grief at separation from Sophia, who insisted on staying at Haven despite being only fourteen.

"She's not child anymore. Apocalypse aged her beyond years, taught survival skills that make her more capable than many adults. But she's still my daughter, still person I'm supposed to protect. Except protection sometimes means respecting her choice to fight alongside community she considers family."

The Prison's cafeteria becomes dormitory, cells transform into family quarters, and Carol's organizational genius creates order from chaos—medical station here, kitchen there, children's area separated from stress of adult anxieties.

Lori arrives five months pregnant and visibly exhausted, Carl having stayed at Prison to help defend civilians rather than joining Rick at Haven. Mother and almost-mother exchange understanding glance—both pregnant, both terrified for partners and older children, both functioning despite fear because that's what survival demands.

POV: Tyreese

Tyreese coordinates Riverside's fortification with Sasha beside him, brother and sister working in synchronized efficiency developed through months of partnership.

"Thirty fighters defending settlement that housed fifty. Math says abandon it, consolidate at Prison where numbers concentrate. But Riverside represents democratic principles—community we built through consensus rather than imposition. Letting Governor take it without fight feels like surrender of values alongside territory."

Sandbags rise into firing positions Glenn designed using engineering knowledge that seems miraculous in apocalypse. Concealed tunnels provide retreat routes if defenses become untenable. Ammunition caches hide in strategic locations ensuring resupply under fire.

"Think we'll hold?" Sasha asks while filling another sandbag, the question encompassing tactical assessment and existential uncertainty equally.

"We hold or we die trying," Tyreese replies, the statement carrying weight of commitment rather than just bravado. "That's what freedom costs—willingness to defend it when defense seems impossible."

POV: Glenn

Glenn's engineering transforms Haven's walls into fortress over five frantic days, his technical expertise applied to defensive multiplication that might compensate for numerical disadvantage.

"Learned this in college—structural engineering, load calculations, defensive architecture. Never imagined applying education to literally building fortifications against authoritarian assault. But that's apocalypse—skills become survival tools, hobbies become vocations, and pizza delivery guy becomes defensive architect."

Maggie works beside him, both finding comfort in shared labor that distracts from awareness that one or both might die when enemies arrive. They don't discuss it—words would make fear concrete, and maintaining hope requires leaving some things unspoken.

POV: Daryl

Daryl trains final wave of civilian volunteers with gruff instruction masking genuine concern for untested fighters about to face combat against experienced enemies.

"Half of 'em will panic first time bullets fly. Quarter will freeze completely. Maybe ten percent will actually fight effectively. But that ten percent might make difference between holding line and collapse, so gotta train everyone hoping more survive than statistics predict."

Carl participates in training despite being sixteen and theoretically protected by youth—except apocalypse doesn't respect childhood, and Carl's survived enough to warrant inclusion among fighters rather than refugees.

"Squeeze don't jerk," Daryl corrects Carl's trigger pull. "Rifle's tool, not magic wand. Respect it and it'll save your life."

POV: Carl

Carl absorbs instruction with intensity suggesting he's preparing for inevitability rather than possibility—his father will be fighting, his friends defending, and sitting safe at Prison while others die feels like cowardice despite logical arguments about preservation.

"Old enough to fight. Survived Shane's madness, Negan's assault, watched people die and killed to protect community. But Dad still sees kid needing protection rather than capable fighter. Have to prove I'm soldier, not child requiring shelter from war everyone else faces."

"I can fight," Carl states after training, the assertion directed at Rick who watches from command post with expression mixing pride and terror.

"I know," Rick replies, which isn't same as granting permission but acknowledges reality that protecting Carl might be impossible when battle engulfs everything.

POV: Michonne

Michonne sharpens her katana in ritual meditation that's become spiritual practice—blade maintenance as prayer, weapon preparation as communion with skills that've kept her alive.

"Going back to Woodbury. Failed diplomatic mission became intelligence gathering became capture and escape became assassination target. Governor represents everything wrong with apocalypse—charismatic monster using civilization's facade to hide totalitarian cruelty. Removing him might prevent war or just decapitate enemy leaving body thrashing dangerously."

The blade's edge catches light with perfection suggesting lethal capability. She's killed dozens with this weapon—walkers, Saviors, anyone threatening people she's adopted as family after losing her own. One more death for one more cause, except Governor's elimination might save hundreds.

Andrea finds her as sunset paints Prison's walls gold. "Be careful. Coalition needs you."

"I need coalition," Michonne corrects. "First family since Andre. Worth dying for if that's what survival requires."

POV: Scott

Day five of preparations finds Scott on Haven's wall watching darkness settle while calculating probabilities his System quantifies but human fear amplifies beyond mathematics.

[EVACUATION: COMPLETE]

[FORTIFICATIONS: 95% FINISHED]

[FIGHTER POSITIONING: OPTIMAL]

[TIMELINE: 7 DAYS UNTIL ASSAULT]

[SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 45%]

[ANDREA STATUS: SAFE (PRISON)]

[PERSONAL WELLBEING: COMPROMISED]

"Forty-five percent. Improved from thirty-five through preparation and Negan's potential neutralization. Still worse than coin flip. Still means more likely to lose than win. But we're fighting anyway because submission guarantees loss while resistance at least offers possibility of victory."

Rick joins him in comfortable silence, both leaders processing weight of decisions that've positioned their people for desperate defense against enemies learning from previous defeats.

"Ready?" Rick asks, the question encompassing tactical preparation and psychological readiness equally.

Scott thinks of Andrea at Prison, their child growing between danger and safety, communities depending on defense succeeding, and freedom purchased through months of sacrifice now threatened by alliance between two tyrants.

"As I'll ever be," Scott replies honestly, which isn't same as confident but acknowledges reality that readiness is relative when facing overwhelming opposition.

POV: Merle

Merle shares whiskey with Daryl on Haven's wall, rare brotherly affection surfacing before they separate to different assignments—Daryl joining assassination team, Merle commanding Haven's northern defense.

"Might not see him again. Assassination mission's near-suicide, and Haven defense ain't much better odds. Should say something meaningful, express love that's always been there beneath dysfunction and resentment. But that ain't how we work—actions speak, words just complicate."

"Don't get dead," Merle offers, which is closest he gets to sentiment.

"You neither," Daryl replies, understanding communicated despite minimal vocabulary.

They drink in silence watching stars emerge indifferent to human struggles below, two brothers who've survived addiction, abuse, apocalypse, and each other through combination of luck and stubbornness. Tomorrow might end that survival, but tonight they're together one more time.

POV: Andrea

That night at Prison, Andrea lies in narrow bunk feeling their child move with increasing frequency—kicks and rolls suggesting baby's growing strength despite apocalypse's constant pressures.

"Scott's at Haven coordinating final preparations. I'm here safe but separated, protecting our child while he risks his life defending freedom we chose building together. That's parenthood's cruelty—we bring life into world that threatens death constantly, then separate to maximize survival chances even when separation feels like abandonment."

Lori occupies the next bunk, her own pregnancy more advanced and visibly taxing. They exchange glance in darkness—unspoken understanding between women creating life while men plan death.

"They'll be fine," Lori whispers without conviction.

"Yeah," Andrea agrees without belief.

Outside, 120 civilians sleep fitfully under protection of 35 fighters manning Prison's walls. Seven miles away, Haven and Riverside prepare for assault from enemies who've allied specifically to destroy coalition's democratic experiment. And somewhere between, Michonne's assassination team prepares to infiltrate Woodbury seeking decapitation strike that might prevent war or just provoke earlier assault.

The clock runs toward conflict that'll determine whether freedom survives or dies under authoritarian coordination. Coalition's prepared as well as seven days allows, but preparation and victory aren't synonymous when enemies command equal numbers with superior equipment.

Tomorrow brings final missions launching. Tonight brings fear and determination mixing equally—terror of losing everything, resolve to defend regardless of cost.

The preparations are complete. The waiting begins.
