Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Honorary Successor of the Ashina School

Flames flow through the body;

Rusted iron is scoured in sand and gravel;

An evil demon returns from the darkness!

A cacophony of sounds like popping beans erupted in a continuous stream. Sinews, bones, and blood vessels snapped like steel wires, their sharp, broken ends piercing through the skin, leaving the entire body drenched in blood as if it were being subjected to death by a thousand cuts.

Expanding! Healing! Tearing!

A body that was originally that of an ordinary person underwent an excruciating process of transformation, becoming utterly reborn in just ten short minutes. When it stood up again, its perspective on the world was entirely different.

This was a small giant, standing a full two and a half meters tall. Scarcely a patch of intact skin could be found on its entire body. Clearly defined muscles were exposed like hard armor, protecting the relatively fragile internal organs.

Meanwhile, pale, sharp bones grew out into long spikes from the ribs, elbows, knees, and the top of the head, as if it were studded with daggers. Merely contracting its limbs would turn it into a wheel of blades, ready to绞杀 everything in its path.

Sparks from the exploding helicopter ignited a widespread fire, and the forest was gradually being consumed. Half the sky was stained red, like a thick, bloody mist about to shroud the world!

—The savage and arrogant man opened his eyes amidst the roaring flames. His pale hair flew up in the heatwave, revealing a Rakshasa's face that was not at all human.

Ryomen Sukuna (the Sukuna Demon)!

The bodies of the priests lay nearby, their deaths gruesome but inflicted by a single, fatal blow. The Sukuna Demon had first eliminated these outwardly impressive but inwardly useless men and selected a body with stronger spiritual particles.

Then, a helicopter just happened to fly overhead—as it turns out, these things really do fall easily~

For this evil demon who once dominated an era in ancient times, a physical body was not something that could be replaced casually, as each transformation consumed a large amount of its dwindling demonic power.

But now, it spared no expense, transforming this priest's body into the form most suitable for wielding its power, because it had a premonition—

He's coming soon!

A duel destined to happen is about to begin!

Since ancient times, whenever demons and monsters have tried to bring calamity to the world, there have always been samurai or onmyoji who stood on the side of ordinary people, ready to fight to the death on this land using any means necessary!

It was an extremely ancient demonic god; this was not the first time it had encountered a human who came to challenge it.

Most of the time, it was the victor, but a single mistake could cast it into the abyss forever...

It would not repeat the mistake it made hundreds of years ago!

Having finally awakened in a prosperous era, it was determined to make everything its hands touched its own!

Kra-la-la~

Stretching its stiff neck, the Sukuna Demon casually pulled a long, slender Tang-style straight sword from an opened longbox—the sacred object the priests had been escorting. It was originally a ceremonial sword, with a blade over two meters long, not something an ordinary person could wield.

But this exaggerated design, when met with Sukuna's superhuman height and arm span, seemed perfectly fitting.

"Guh... Ugh... No, don't..."

By the wreckage of the helicopter, a man in a uniform was leaning against it, on the verge of death. There was no fear in his eyes, only a numb gaze fixed on the monster slowly approaching him.

His mind was in utter chaos. A short while ago, someone in the crew had suddenly lost their sanity and started attacking the others, even affecting the pilot. Flying at low altitude at night was already dangerous, and with the unexpected incident, the helicopter lost its balance during the struggle and crashed.

He couldn't be called a survivor, as his lower body was gone. Massive blood loss made him feel incredibly cold despite being surrounded by waves of heat.

"You... was it you... who did this?"

The man moved his neck with difficulty, his emotionless eyes glancing at the Sukuna Demon.

"To think it was... a yokai, hehe..."

The Sukuna Demon looked down at the man who was doomed to die, showing no reaction. After all, killing or eating people was a mundane affair for it.

"Hundreds of years ago, humans needed horse-drawn carriages to travel, but now they can build iron birds that fly in the sky... These little tricks are ultimately useless. No matter the era, humans are exceedingly weak. Only a few ever become strong."

Plunge!

The longsword thrust down from above, piercing the man's body through the collarbone.

"And you, the value of the weak is to become fodder for the strong!"

The man's eyes lost their light, while the rust-covered ancient sword was gradually covered by crimson, vein-like patterns, making the vicious weapon as intimidating as if it had just been pulled from a forge.

"With this, I lack nothing."

The Sukuna Demon pulled out the longsword, and astonishingly, not a single drop of blood spurted out; it had all been absorbed. The sword itself was completely transformed, its blade now glowing a fiery golden-red, radiating a scorching heat that warped the very air.

It swung the sword a few times, and wherever the blade passed, it stirred up translucent ripples visible to the naked eye, much to the Sukuna Demon's satisfaction.

Of course, this wasn't because the sword's material was anything special.

As it turned out, this Tang-style straight sword, which had been worshipped as a sacred object for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, possessed no special power at all. Although it had been enhanced by the power of faith, that was not something an evil demon could utilize, so it simply ignored it.

Right now, it was just using human flesh and blood as a medium to 'enchant' the ancient blade.

In fact, if it had just picked up a piece of a rotor blade from the ground, the effect after enchantment would probably have been stronger than any ancient sword!

Its insistence on using the ancient sword was purely a matter of personal preference.

"Is one person's flesh and blood not enough? To forge this into a true demon sword, the blood of a hundred men might be required."

It could feel the pulse of bloodlines coming from its hand, as if it weren't holding a weapon, but the beating heart of another being.

This familiar feeling of dominating everything had returned!

And in this peaceful era, there would be no more powerful samurai to cause trouble!

"Hehe... Ha... Hahahaha! A body! I've finally obtained a decent body!

Next is the time for the hunt—"

BOOM!

The atmosphere seemed to be struck violently, sending invisible ripples across its surface. A scorching armor-piercing round directly penetrated the Sukuna Demon's jawbone, blowing off half of its lower jaw!

This is...?!

The Sukuna Demon's ruined face smiled. Its tall, sturdy body immediately crouched low, and in the next second, it shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.

He... he actually came to find me!

Although he's still using such a cowardly weapon, it seems this era isn't without its warriors!

BOOM!

BOOM!

The bullets from the large-caliber sniper rifle were powerful enough to pierce thin armor, and even the Sukuna Demon would be wounded if hit. Yet, its steps were not hindered in the slightest. Like an undead zombie, it completely disregarded its horrific wounds and just kept sprinting like a ravenous, rabid dog—

This is the terror of the inhuman!

If this were Sukuna's original body, forget bullets, even a naval cannon would have difficulty breaking its defense. Although this current body was modified from a human and lacked the durability to withstand armor-piercing rounds, its bones were as hard and tough as an alloy.

No matter how much flesh was blasted away, as long as the skeleton could still move, the wounds would regenerate, and it would continue to hunt its prey!

Whoosh whoosh whoosh~

The mountain forest scenery receded behind it as the Sukuna Demon quickly located Ryu, who was sniping from a treetop. It shot him a savage grin amidst the boy's flustered expression and charged—

BOOM!

BOOM!

It was unclear what it had triggered, but two bursts of intense light suddenly erupted from under the Sukuna Demon's feet.

Flames as hot as magma and lightning that bloomed with a blue afterglow mercilessly engulfed it!

"Aaargh! Despicable! Coward! You don't dare fight me head-on! Do you even call yourself a samurai—"

Ryu suddenly calmed down, turned his rifle, chambered a round, his face devoid of joy or sorrow.

BOOM!!!

Amidst the swirling lightning and fire, the Sukuna Demon's head exploded like a ripe fruit!

Despicable? Without using the Ashina Style, how is one supposed to become a Sword Saint?!
