Konoha --- Training Ground / Pure Land Connection
After the morning session.
Naruto had gone to the census stand.
Bai Yan had returned to Ichiraku.
The training ground was quiet.
Sasuke sat against the split post with the chat open.
[Uchiha Sasuke @Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Ready when you are.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Tell me what the Sharingan perceives when you look at the training ground right now.]
Sasuke activated the Sharingan at low level.
Not the full intense focus of combat.
The background awareness.
He looked at the training ground.
The post: inert wood. No intention. Just what it was.
The ground: neutral. Shaped by use over time. The intention of training was in it --- embedded in the soil by repetition.
The birds at the edge: alive, moving toward food and warmth and the specific things birds move toward.
And at the edge of the stand, barely visible: the faint residue of where Naruto had been training. The natural energy had left a mark. Not chakra exactly. More like a footprint. An impression of something that had been present.
He described all of this.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The footprint. That's new.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: I didn't expect to perceive natural energy.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The seed is interacting with the Sharingan's base function. Natural energy has intention in a different way than chakra --- it moves toward receptive states. The Sharingan can now perceive that movement.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: So I can see where the natural energy wants to go.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Roughly. With refinement, more precisely.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: That's useful for understanding Naruto's Sage Mode.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes. Also useful for the anchor process specifically. The synchronization with Toneri's array runs on natural energy. If you can perceive its intention in real time---]
[Uchiha Sasuke: I can see disruptions before they become critical.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
Sasuke set down the chat for a moment.
He looked at the training ground.
At the footprint of Naruto's session.
At the way the natural energy had pooled there in the three hours since.
He thought about standing next to someone during a high-stakes process.
About being able to see what was happening in the substrate before it surfaced.
About being the person who saw it coming.
He picked up the chat.
[Uchiha Sasuke: I have a question. Unrelated to the cultivation.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Ask.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: You created the research on the Sharingan. The analysis of how it develops. The documentation of what the Uchiha clan's chakra was doing.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: You understood the clan better than anyone outside it.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Possibly better than anyone inside it, in certain technical respects.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Then why did you oppose them?]
A pause.
Longer than Tobirama's usual response time.
[Uchiha Sasuke: Not rhetorically. I'm asking directly. You studied them. You understood what they were. You must have understood that the fear-based oppression created the exact conditions that made them dangerous. You wrote the research that proved the Sharingan activates through trauma. And then you kept the policies that guaranteed trauma.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: I want to understand how someone that intelligent held both of those things at the same time.]
Another pause.
Longer.
Sasuke waited.
In the Pure Land, Tobirama was standing at the specific distance from Hashirama that he maintained when he was thinking about something he didn't want to be interrupted on.
Hashirama, who knew that distance well, had very carefully not said anything for three minutes.
Tobirama thought about the question.
He thought about all the versions of the answer he could give.
The strategic one: the clan represented a genuine destabilizing force and surveillance was necessary for village security.
The historical one: the era was different, the pressures were different, the information available was incomplete.
Both true.
Neither complete.
He thought about the scroll's evaluation.
About the distance between who he was and who he became is the largest recorded gap in this world's history.
That was about Obito.
But the scroll had also said, about Tobirama: he understood the two clans could never truly coexist.
He'd believed that.
He'd believed it because every time he'd looked at the evidence, that's what the evidence said.
He'd never asked himself whether the evidence was shaped by the conditions he was helping create.
He wrote:
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I held both of those things at the same time because I convinced myself the research and the policy were separate categories.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The research was objective analysis. The policy was risk management. I kept them in different files in my mind and only looked at each file when it was relevant.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: What I failed to do was read both files simultaneously and notice that the second one contradicted the conclusions of the first.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: You compartmentalized it.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes. I was very good at compartmentalization. It was one of my more useful skills. It was also, in this case, the mechanism of the mistake.]
Sasuke read this.
He thought about Itachi.
About what Itachi had done and why.
About the compartmentalization required to love someone and destroy everything around them simultaneously.
He thought about his own compartmentalization.
About grief and revenge in separate files that he'd never opened at the same time.
[Uchiha Sasuke: The policy didn't just fail to address the cause. It made it worse.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Which means every Uchiha who developed the Mangekyō through trauma that your policies contributed to---]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: You don't need me to finish the sentence.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: No.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I've finished it myself. Many times.]
Sasuke looked at the training ground.
At the footprint of natural energy.
At the split post.
[Uchiha Sasuke: The scroll gave me the Six Paths seed. Knowing what I become.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: You're guiding the cultivation. Knowing what you did.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: ...Both of those things are happening anyway.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Why?]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Because the scroll ranks outcomes. And because I am, whatever else I was, a man who believed in developing capability in people who could use it well.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: And because.]
He stopped.
Started again.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: You asked me a direct question and I gave you a direct answer. That is not something I do easily. I am telling you this because I want you to understand that the directness is a form of respect.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I did harm. The harm is not cancelled by later choices. But later choices still matter.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I'm guiding your cultivation because the later choices still matter and this is one of them.]
Sasuke read that.
He read it again.
He set down the chat.
He looked at the training ground.
He thought about what the later choices still matter felt like from the inside of someone who had made choices they couldn't undo.
He thought about the unnamed thing in his own chakra.
The one that wasn't ready to be named yet.
He thought about it being a little clearer today than it was yesterday.
He thought about every day making it a little clearer.
He picked up the chat.
[Uchiha Sasuke: Thank you for answering directly.]
A pause.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Don't thank me. Continue the cultivation.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Yes, Tobirama-sensei.]
A slightly longer pause than usual.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...That is marginally acceptable.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: So I've been told.]
In the Pure Land, Hashirama had been reading the conversation.
He had been very quiet.
He looked at Tobirama.
Tobirama was looking at somewhere that wasn't Hashirama.
"Brother," Hashirama said.
"Don't."
"I'm not going to say anything sentimental."
"Good."
"I just want to say---that was hard to say."
"I know."
"And you said it anyway."
"...I know."
"That's---"
"Hashirama."
"Yes?"
"Stop."
"Okay."
A pause.
"I'm proud of you," Hashirama said.
Tobirama closed his eyes.
"I told you to stop," he said.
"I know," Hashirama said. "I couldn't."
Tobirama was quiet.
"...Fine," he said.
Just that.
But he didn't move away.
