[Konoha — Team Seven's Training Ground, December 17th, 3:30 PM]
The training ground was cold in December in a specific way — the frost had gone from the grass but hadn't fully left the soil, so the footwork had a slightly firmer texture than it did in October, and the morning census birds had shifted species, the summer regulars replaced by the hardier winter ones that did not care about temperature and had the general energy of small creatures who had decided the cold was other people's problem.
Naruto had counted nine birds this morning. The judgmental one was still on the left branch. It was, apparently, a winter species, which explained a great deal.
He was running wind nature forms at half-speed — the specific half-speed that looked like a training reduction and was actually a diagnostic, checking the entry angle for drift after two weeks of non-standard scheduling during the nine cases investigation. There was no drift. The form held clean.
Sakura was at the post, running the bilateral split at one-minute intervals. She had long since stopped counting the seconds and was instead running them until it felt complete, which was, Tobirama had told her when she'd described this development, the difference between training the skill and having it.
Sasuke arrived at three-thirty-five, which was when he always arrived when he'd been at the archives in the morning. He set his bag against the fence, ran the Chidori calibration, confirmed the perception layer at its current development level — 84%, up from 71% a month ago — and then sat against the post.
He did not immediately start a second exercise.
Naruto noticed this. Sakura noticed this. Neither of them said anything immediately, because they had all learned, at different times and through different routes, the value of waiting for the moment that was actually the moment.
After five minutes, Sasuke said: "What do you want next."
It was addressed to Naruto. Not to the general air, not to the training ground. To Naruto specifically.
Naruto let the wind nature chakra settle. He looked at the split post. He thought about the question the way he thought about important things — not reaching for an answer, just letting the attention rest on it until something became clear.
"I want to finish the Rasenshuriken," he said.
"You've been working toward it for weeks."
"I mean I want to actually finish it. Not as an objective. As the next step, and then whatever comes after the next step." He paused. "The training has been for something. I'd like to see what it was for."
"The seal maintenance for Kaguya," Sakura said. "Tobirama-sensei's estimate is six months before the next access window."
"I know," Naruto said. "That's enough time to develop the stable form completely. To have the Rasenshuriken ready." He looked at the post, at the wind nature diagonal mark alongside the Rasengan split and Sasuke's Chidori burn. "I want to know what I can do by then. Not what I'm projected to be able to do. What I can actually do."
Sasuke looked at him.
"That's not what I asked," he said.
Naruto looked back.
"I know," he said.
A pause.
"I want to be Hokage," Naruto said. "That's not new. But it feels different now than it did before the scroll. Before it was — I want to be Hokage because I want the village to see me. Now it's—" He stopped. Found the words. "Now I want to be Hokage because I understand what the village is and I think I can take care of it. That's different."
"Yes," Sasuke said. "It is."
"Is that an objection."
"No," Sasuke said. "It's confirmation."
Naruto looked at him. "What do you want."
Sasuke was quiet for a moment. He looked at the post. He looked at the three marks on it — the diagonal, the split, the burn.
"I want to be someone worth being beside," he said. "When you get there. I want to have built something by then that's actually worth the position."
Sakura looked at him.
"That's already what you're building," she said.
"I know," Sasuke said. "I want to finish it."
She looked at the post.
"I want to be the medic who's always there," she said. "Not the best — I'll work on that separately. The one who's always there. For whatever comes next." She paused. "Tsunade's note. The one from the ranking. She said—" She stopped. "She said something specific. I'm not going to say what. But it told me what she sees when she looks at where I'm going, and I want to get there."
They sat with that.
The training ground was cold and quiet. The winter birds were doing their business in the stand. The split post stood in the dug-up earth with its three marks catching the December afternoon light.
Naruto stood up.
He walked to the post.
He pressed his palm flat against the wood — not a technique, not a seal. Just: contact. The specific weight of a hand placed deliberately.
He thought about his father at the Konoha gate, counting people from a street corner. He thought about the gate's darker patch at shoulder height. He thought about what you held when you needed to hold something specific.
He thought about what he wanted this to be when he came back to it.
He pressed once.
He stepped back.
There was no new mark. A palm print wasn't a technique. It didn't leave evidence.
But he knew it was there.
Sasuke looked at him.
"What was that," he said.
"Checking if it's real," Naruto said.
"It's a post."
"I know."
"It's very real."
"Yeah," Naruto said. "It is."
He looked at the three marks — the wind nature diagonal, the Rasengan split, the Chidori burn. Three people, every morning, for months now. The specific accumulation of what you became when you showed up.
He thought: the scroll named everything it could see.
He thought: we named the rest.
He thought: and we keep going.
"Same time tomorrow," he said.
"Same time tomorrow," Sakura said.
Sasuke was already picking up his bag.
They walked out of the training ground together, into the December evening, into the ordinary ongoing life of three people who had been seen clearly and were choosing, every morning, what to do with that.
