Chapter 307 - Spring Comes. What Was Built.

[Konohagakure — Team Seven's Training Ground, March 4th]

The Rasenshuriken existed at 9:47 in the morning on a Tuesday in early March.

Naruto threw it at the split post from eight meters. The post had survived the Rasengan fracture and the wind nature diagonal and Sasuke's Chidori burn and four months of sustained training at increasing intensity. It had been reinforced twice by the maintenance crew who serviced training equipment, both times without comment, because the maintenance crew had learned that Team Seven's posts required structural attention on a six-week cycle and had adjusted accordingly.

The Rasenshuriken hit the post.

The post survived, technically. The top third did not.

The wind nature dispersal pattern spread across the wood in a shape that was entirely new — not the diagonal of the basic form, not the round impact of the Rasengan, something that was both and neither, the specific shape of two techniques that had finally learned to be one.

Naruto stood with his arm extended, breathing harder than usual.

He looked at the post.

He looked at his hand.

He sent one message.

Naruto: It worked.

Tobirama's response came back in forty seconds.

Tobirama: The dispersal pattern. Describe it.

Naruto described it. Precisely, because Tobirama had spent four months teaching him to describe technique results precisely and the habit had taken.

A pause.

Tobirama: Precisely as I expected.

Tobirama: Well done.

Naruto read this twice.

He looked at the post.

He looked at the three marks — the split, the diagonal, the Chidori burn, and now the new mark above them, the one that was both and neither.

He thought: four months. From attempt one to this.

He thought: we work faster.

Sasuke arrived at ten and looked at the post for a long moment.

"The wind nature and the Rasengan," he said. "Simultaneously."

"Yes."

"The entry angle from the Rasengan side or the wind nature side."

"Wind nature dominant. Rasengan provides the rotation base."

Sasuke looked at the dispersal pattern. The perception layer read the intent behind it — old habit now, automatic. He saw the design of it, the way the two techniques had resolved into a third thing that was specific and complete.

"Good," he said.

He turned to his own session. The Six Paths seed calibration, which had been at 91% for three weeks while the final layer integrated at its own pace, the way growth worked when it was working correctly. Today felt different. He ran the test.

He sent a message.

Sasuke: Tobirama-sensei. The perception layer. It's reading the training ground's full intention field simultaneously at a resolution I haven't had before.

Tobirama: Depth of field?

Sasuke: Full three-sixty. No blind spots.

A pause.

Tobirama: That's 95%.

Sasuke: Yes.

Tobirama: The remaining 5% will integrate in the field, not in training. It requires conditions training cannot replicate.

Sasuke: Understood.

Tobirama: Sasuke.

Sasuke: Yes.

Tobirama: The seed is complete. What you do with it now is your own work.

Sasuke read this.

He thought about the training log entry — cultivate capability in service of being present for what matters. He thought about the rivals ranking, nine years and five months remaining. He thought about what ten years looked like from the inside of five months in.

He sent: Understood. Thank you.

Tobirama: Don't thank me. The cultivation was yours.

Sasuke: The methodology was yours.

Tobirama: ...

Tobirama: We'll both take credit then.

Sasuke almost smiled.

Sakura broke the sixth consecutive training milestone at eleven.

This one was Tsunade's most recent expected timeline for the strength application's precision ceiling — the point at which the chakra concentration could be maintained through full three-dimensional movement without losing the targeting resolution. Tsunade had set the expected date as "late spring, optimistically."

It was early March.

Sakura ran the form three times to confirm it wasn't a fluke.

She sent the log to Shizune, as was the protocol.

Shizune sent it to Tsunade.

Tsunade's response came back in two minutes.

Tsunade: Come to my office. Now.

Sakura: Is something wrong?

Tsunade: No. I want to watch the next form live. Move.

Sakura moved.

In Tsunade's training room, with the Hokage watching from the elevated observation platform and pretending she was taking clinical notes, Sakura ran the precision form at full speed and came out of it clean.

Tsunade did not say anything immediately.

She looked at the form result. She looked at her notes. She looked at Sakura.

"How did it feel," she said.

"Complete," Sakura said. "Not like I was managing it. Like it was just — there."

Tsunade looked at the platform rail. She had a specific expression she wore when she was deciding how to say something she already knew she was going to say.

"The Strength of a Hundred Seal," she said. "The preparation for it. I want to start it this month."

Sakura went very still.

"That takes — the accumulation alone—"

"I know what it takes," Tsunade said. "I know because I've watched you work for four months and I know exactly where you are. The preparation begins when the foundation is ready." She paused. "It's ready."

Sakura looked at her.

She thought about the note from the ranking. The one she'd never told anyone the contents of, folded twice, sealed with Tsunade's stamp. The one she'd read in the plaza and pressed the back of her hand against her mouth about.

She thought: she wrote it before the training started. She already saw this.

"This month," Sakura said.

"This month," Tsunade confirmed. "We start Monday."

[Konoha — Sealing Card Research Room, March 4th, 4:00 PM]

The Edo Tensei structural review concluded at four in the afternoon, four months after it had begun.

Tobirama and Orochimaru had worked through the complete document — every refinement Orochimaru had made to the original design, every activation sequence, every binding modification, every variation across thirty years of operational use. Each one analyzed, annotated, understood.

The final summary document was 340 pages.

Orochimaru compiled it. Tobirama reviewed the compilation. They sent it to Hiruzen simultaneously, which was, in its way, the most significant thing about it — the joint transmission, the shared authorship, the record of two people with opposed histories agreeing on what the facts were.

Tobirama: The document is complete. It should be classified at the highest level and held in the restricted archive alongside the original binding papers.

Orochimaru: Agreed.

Tobirama: The practical implication is that we now have a complete technical record of every application of this technique since its original development. If anyone attempts to use a derivative in the future, the record provides the counter.

Orochimaru: Yes.

Tobirama: Including applications I did not anticipate in the original design.

Orochimaru: Yes.

A pause.

Tobirama: The refinements were technically sophisticated.

Orochimaru: They were.

Tobirama: Some of them are improvements.

Orochimaru looked at the Sealing Card.

"I know," he said.

Tobirama: I will note them as improvements in the document.

"With attribution?"

Tobirama: With attribution.

Orochimaru was quiet for a moment. He looked at the 340 pages on the desk in front of him — four months of the most rigorous technical work he had done since the Sound Village years, done this time for the purpose of understanding rather than weaponizing.

"Tobirama-sensei," he said.

Tobirama: Mm.

"What comes after the document."

Tobirama: We move to the next problem.

"Which is."

Tobirama: Hatsumi's theoretical framework for the inverse preservation technique requires a second reviewer before it can be fully validated. I have reviewed it. It needs one more qualified reader.

"You want me to review it."

Tobirama: You are the most technically qualified person in the living world for the task, given your work in the Sound-adjacent territory documentation. Yes.

Orochimaru looked at the ceiling.

He thought about forty years of research done alone, in self-imposed isolation, for objectives that had started as knowledge and had drifted steadily toward control.

He thought about what research looked like when the objectives were different.

"Send me the framework," he said.

Tobirama: Already in your queue.
