Chapter 84 - Chapter 83: Tactics

"The battle rules are 3v3. Only the challenger is allowed to switch Pokémon. Now—let the battle begin!" the referee declared.

"Normally, for a new Trainer, I would go easy," Giovanni said calmly.

"But I hear you're quite talented. In that case, I'll make things a bit more challenging."

He threw a Poké Ball. "Sandslash, I'm counting on you for this match."

"San—!"

A bipedal Pokémon with sharp, green-tinted spikes along its back appeared in the arena. Its claws were like steel spikes, gleaming with lethality.

[Sandslash Lv.53 (Gym Grade · Beginner)]

Ace narrowed his eyes. This was likely one of Giovanni's third-string Pokémon, used for routine Gym challenges.

Forget Giovanni's main team—this Sandslash probably wouldn't even make his second or third lineup.

Even so, Ace felt no pressure.

After all, he and Giovanni weren't from the same era. Give him two years, and he'd definitely catch up.

With that thought, Ace threw his Poké Ball. "Milotic, I choose you!"

"Mio—!"

Milotic emerged in a burst of rainbow light, her long body gliding gracefully through the air with a flick of her tail.

After a period of focused cultivation, her strength had increased significantly.

[Milotic Lv.35 (Advanced)]

She had already mastered several powerful moves: Recover, Aqua Tail, Safeguard, Surf, Rain Dance, Coil, and Hydro Pump.

Ace's thoughts stirred, further enriching Milotic's move pool.

Due to the lack of standard training limitations, it only cost 500 pervert points to add three more moves:

Soak, Icy Wind, and Tickle.

Looking at her completed moveset, Ace's lips curved upward.

He already had a plan.

"You may go first," Giovanni said, his gaze fixed on Milotic, interest clearly rising.

Ace didn't hesitate. "Milotic—use Coil!"

Coil: A status move. The user coils up to focus energy, raising Attack, Defense, and Accuracy by one stage each.

"Sand Tomb, then Earthquake," Giovanni ordered without pause.

Sand Tomb: A Ground-type physical move (35 power). Traps the opponent in a swirling vortex of sand, dealing continuous damage and preventing switching.

Earthquake: A Ground-type physical move (100 power). The user stomps the ground, creating shockwaves that strike all Pokémon on the field.

Giovanni's strategy was clear: trap Milotic first, then crush her with overwhelming force.

Even though Ground-type moves weren't very effective against a Water-type, the level gap would still ensure considerable damage.

The arena floor shifted into flowing sand, locking Milotic in place as violent shockwaves rippled outward. The entire Gym trembled.

Gym-grade Pokémon attacks already carried destructive implications.

Ace's eyes sharpened. As Coil finished stacking, he gave the next command immediately.

"Splash to evade the damage—then use Aqua Ring!"

"Mio~!"

With perfect coordination, Milotic slammed her tail against the ground.

Countless memories of flailing helplessly as a Feebas allowed her to lift herself into the air for a brief moment.

Rainbow scales refracted the light amid the yellow sands as Milotic narrowly avoided the brunt of the combined attack.

At the same time, a veil of water descended around her, glowing faintly blue as her vitality began to recover.

Aqua Ring: Creates a ring of water that restores HP gradually each turn.

It was obvious—Ace intended to fight a battle of attrition.

Giovanni's eyes gleamed with approval. "A good counter. But what next? Sandslash—Rollout, close the distance!"

Sandslash curled into a spiked ball and charged forward at high speed.

"Icy Wind!"

"Mio—!"

A burst of icy blue wind blasted forward. Frost clung to Sandslash's body, and its speed dropped noticeably.

Icy Wind: Ice-type special move (55 power). Lowers the opponent's Speed by one stage.

"Slash!" Giovanni ordered, unfazed.

He ignored the Icy Wind. It wasn't a same-type attack—even though it was super effective, the damage alone wouldn't decide the fight.

But Slash, a sharp Normal-type physical move with high critical potential, could heavily injure Milotic if it landed cleanly.

Ace was ready.

"Soak!"

Just before Sandslash's claws struck, a sphere of water exploded against its face.

Its movements slowed further.

"Bang—!"

Milotic cried out softly and was knocked back several meters before stabilizing herself.

Aside from looking slightly disheveled, she hadn't taken serious damage.

Soak: Water-type special move (50 power). Deals damage and lowers the opponent's Attack by one stage.

Ace smiled faintly. "Keep going—Coil again."

As the command echoed, Giovanni's expression finally grew serious.

He realized something was wrong.

Coil. Splash. Aqua Ring. Icy Wind. Soak.

None of these moves were overwhelmingly powerful on their own—but together, they formed a suffocating net.

The seemingly useless Splash invalidated Earthquake, forcing Sandslash into close combat.

But approaching meant dealing with Speed reduction from Icy Wind.

Even when it landed hits, Coil boosted Milotic's Defense, Soak weakened Sandslash's Attack, and Aqua Ring constantly restored HP.

If Sandslash couldn't knock Milotic out instantly, it would be dragged into an endless loop.

And reality unfolded exactly as Ace had predicted.

After the third Coil, combined with two successful Soaks, Sandslash—despite its physical prowess—could no longer pose a serious threat to Milotic's naturally high defenses.

Giovanni attempted to turn the tide with Rock Tomb and Rock Slide, hurling massive stones to restrict Milotic's movement while dealing solid damage.

However, Rock Tomb's Speed-lowering effect triggered Milotic's Competitive Ability.

Her Special Attack rose by two stages instantly.

It doubled.

From that moment on, Sandslash's situation only worsened.

When Giovanni finally forced Sandslash into close range again, preparing to end the battle with Giga Impact—

Ace revealed his trump card.

"Recover."

Milotic healed on the spot, calmly tanking the 150-power Normal-type blow head-on—

And luck favored her.

Charming Body activated.

Sandslash became infatuated, its movements faltering.

At that point, the battle had lost all suspense.

Ace had Milotic set up Rain Dance, stacked Coil all the way to six stages, fully restored her HP with Recover, and then issued the final command.

"Aqua Tail."

"BOOM—!!"

Sandslash screamed as Milotic's rainbow-scaled tail slammed it into the arena floor, a roaring torrent exploding outward.

With six Coils, Milotic's Attack had increased by 300%.

Aqua Tail's effective power soared past 360, amplified further by STAB, rain boost, and Mystic Water.

Sandslash was utterly defeated.

Cracks spread across the arena floor, bearing silent witness to the terrifying force of that strike.

Ace grinned and glanced toward the three girls watching from the sidelines.

Yellow gazed at him with pure admiration.

Blue looked genuinely impressed.

Misty stood frozen in shock.

"Heh… it's just a Gym battle," Ace muttered casually.

"With this no-switch format, I've lost count of how many higher-level opponents I've beaten in games."

In his previous life, he'd even used a Level 1 Aron to solo an entire team of Level 100 Legendary Pokémon.

Basic operations.
