At midnight, Obsidian Fortress loomed like a colossal beast crouching at the edge of the Blackwood Forest. Its outer walls were hewn from cooled volcanic rock, the crevices thick with year-round cold mist that carried the glacial chill of the earth's deepest veins when breathed into the lungs.

Three whale-oil chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceiling of the Underground Council Chamber, their amber firelight casting distorted shadows across the stone walls. The ancient runes carved into the rock stretched thin in the glow, like countless dormant eyes, watching the conspiracy unfolding within the hall in unblinking silence.

Catherine sat in the stone chair beside the main throne, the hem of her black robe concealing her trembling knees. The agony of the silver burns spread through her flesh, as if a thousand fine needles were piercing beneath her skin; every breath tugged at the gash on her shoulder blade, blue blood seeping slowly through the bandages with a faint iron tang.

Her violet eyes glinted coldly in the firelight, her fingertips brushing unconsciously over her abdomen. The faint flutter there was her only solace, the very force that held her upright against the throbbing pain.

"The west-wing dungeon of Silvermoon Castle is Karl's weak point." Victoria slammed her silver sword onto the stone table, the sharp clang of metal against rock echoing through the chamber and jostling the parchment map atop its surface.

"It was once an abandoned armory; the runic defenses are barely a third of those on the front facade, and there is a three-minute gap in the guard rotation — intelligence my spy inside the castle paid for with their life."

Her voice was hoarse, rough with the wear of endless battle, an old scar snaking across her neck peeking through the firelight, a permanent brand left by the silver blades of Karl's vampire hunters.

Li Haoran leaned over the map, his fingertip tracing the red line marked "Secret Passage". The star-shaped birthmark on his palm flared to life suddenly, burning as if pressed to a hot coal. He could clearly sense the faint aura of dark magic lingering on the map — Karl's mark, cold and viscous, like a cobweb clinging to the skin.

"Three minutes is far too short." He lifted his head, his gaze sweeping over the assembled crowd. "Karl's hunters react with terrifying speed. We need a diversion at the front gate, and someone to break the runic barrier at the entrance — Samantha, are the breaching tools you spoke of ready?"

Samantha let out a low, amused chuckle, the blood-crystal ring on her fingertip refracting a scarlet glow in the firelight. She pulled a small bronze casket from the wide sleeve of her gown, its surface carved with runes matching those on the map, edged with tiny black gemstones.

"This is the Barrier Breaker Box, forged from ground relic bones of the Dracula line, mixed with the blue blood of three lowborn vampires who volunteered as sacrifices." She flipped open the lid, and a thick, sweet-savage scent washed over them, tangled with the rot of ancient bone.

"Hold it to the barrier, and it will siphon the rune's power automatically, tearing open a gap wide enough for two to pass within thirty seconds."

Li Haoran stepped back unconsciously, the scent tightening his throat — not with disgust, but primal wariness, as if the box held something wild and unhinged. Catherine's brows furrowed too, a flicker of doubt crossing her violet eyes.

"This power is far too aggressive. Will it not draw Karl's immediate attention?"

"Risk walks hand in hand with reward, Lady Catherine." Samantha snapped the lid shut, her smile still charming but utterly devoid of warmth. "Strike under the cover of night, or wait for Karl to complete the blood pact ritual — and we will all become his mindless puppets. Which do you choose?"

A heavy silence settled over the Council Chamber, broken only by the crackle of burning whale oil. Cole stood rooted in the shadows, not uttering a single word, the hem of his black robe pooling on the floor as if melted into the darkness itself.

Li Haoran could not shake the feeling that those hidden eyes were scanning the room, cold and judgmental; his shoulders had tensed ever so slightly the moment Samantha produced the Barrier Breaker Box.

"I will lead a contingent in a frontal feint." Victoria shattered the quiet, spinning her silver sword in a sharp, icy arc. "My followers are warriors forged in blood and death; they can hold the hunters off for at least ten minutes."

"Catherine and I will infiltrate the dungeon, rescue the imprisoned lowborn vampires, and destroy the core of Karl's blood pact ritual." Li Haoran's voice was steady, the faint surge of Sacred Blood power in his palm chasing away a sliver of unease.

"Samantha, you will remain at the camp to command and secure our escape route."

At that moment, the stone door of the chamber crashed open, a burnt stench flooding in alongside frantic footsteps. Evra's face was ashen, the bandages around his left ribcage soaked through with glistening blue blood. He stumbled to the center of the hall, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

"No… it is terrible! The camp… the camp is under attack!"

Everyone shot to their feet. Catherine's violet eyes narrowed sharply, violet magic coiling tightly in her palm. "Speak plainly. What has happened?" Her voice was icy, carrying the oppressive weight of noble authority, steadying Evra's fraying nerves just enough.

"It is… spontaneous combustion!" Evra's teeth chattered, terror blazing in his eyes. "Two brothers burst into flames out of nowhere — not ordinary fire, but… blue-purple flame. It burned too fast to put out; we watched them turn to ash before our very eyes!"

"Blue-purple flame?" Samantha's composure cracked for the first time, the blood-crystal ring twisting furiously around her finger. "It is the Blood Incineration Curse — Karl's forbidden dark magic!"

Li Haoran's heart plummeted. He recalled the illusion trap at the Lakeside Villa; Karl's schemes were far more insidious and cruel than he had imagined. "We had only just gathered, and this strikes. Is there a traitor in our midst?" His gaze flicked instinctively to Cole, who still lingered in the shadows, his expression unreadable.

"To the camp, first!" Catherine surged out of the Council Chamber, her black robe billowing behind her. The night encampment was swallowed by eerie stillness; the patrol warriors had clustered in a tight circle on the western clearing, murmuring amongst themselves in hushed panic.

The air reeked of acrid burnt flesh, mixed with the cloying sweetness of vampire blue blood incinerated, a stench that turned the stomach and clawed at the throat.

Two piles of black ash smoldered faintly on the clearing, tattered fragments of clothing and congealed drops of blue blood clinging to the edges, glinting eerily in the moonlight. Catherine knelt down, her fingertips barely brushing the ash before a searing heat repelled her, a sharp sting pricking her skin — the residual power of the blood curse, laced with Karl's signature dark magic.

"This is no ordinary combustion." She rose to her feet, gravity etched into her violet gaze. "The blood curse spreads through blood alone. The caster must have had direct blood contact with the victims, or…" She paused, turning to Li Haoran with a flicker of dread.

"Or tainted their blood through some hidden medium."

Li Haoran's pulse skyrocketed, a horrifying thought crashing into his mind. "The Sacred Blood… my blood?" He remembered the fleeting blood contact with the three female vampires who had lured him at the Lakeside Villa — had Karl planted the curse in his Sacred Blood through them?

Victoria pointed her silver sword at Li Haoran, her eyes ice-cold and unforgiving. "Who else but you could trigger the curse in two unrelated warriors at once?" Hostility dripped from every word, and the rebel warriors behind her tightened their grips on their weapons, glowering at him with malice.

"Victoria, calm yourself!" Catherine stepped in front of Li Haoran, violet magic flaring violently in her palm. "Haoran is not capable of this treachery, and the blood curse has more than one transmission vector. Do not condemn him on speculation alone!"

"Calm?" Victoria laughed bitterly, the tip of her silver sword trembling with rage. "Karl's deceit and cruelty destroyed my entire clan. I will not let it happen again! Your Sacred Blood is a mystery in itself — how do we know it is not a poisoned 'gift' Karl planted for us?"

Tensions boiled over, the camp's atmosphere plummeting to a freezing point. Samantha stood aside, her eyes flickering with indecision, refusing to take sides, only twisting her blood-crystal ring faster with mounting unease.

Cole remained silent in the shadows, as if the conflict did not concern him — yet Li Haoran caught a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, a flash of hidden malice.

A piercing scream cut through the night from the east side of the camp, followed by a chorus of panicked shouts. "Another one's burning!" A warrior sprinted over, pointing wildly at the tent district.

The group rushed over at once to find a lowborn vampire crumpled before a tent, engulfed in roiling blue-purple flame. The fire spread rapidly across his skin, hissing as it seared flesh, and his body convulsed violently, screams of agony tearing from his throat.

Blue blood oozed from his pores, boiling into thick, acrid smoke the moment it touched the flame.

Li Haoran charged forward despite the shouts of protest. He knew his Sacred Blood might counter the curse; the star birthmark burned hot, Sacred Blood power surging down his arm to his fingertips. He pressed his hand firmly to the burning vampire's chest, searing pain lancing through his fingers as if his hand were being charred — but he did not flinch, forcing the Sacred Blood power into the vampire's body.

A miracle unfolded. The blue-purple flame faltered under the onslaught of Sacred Blood, its wild spread slowing, until it finally dissipated into a wisp of smoke. The vampire's convulsions ceased; his skin was horribly burned, his breath faint and ragged, but he lived.

"This proves Haoran is innocent." Catherine exhaled in relief, a flicker of pride in her violet eyes — only to be replaced by deeper, colder unease. "The Sacred Blood suppresses the curse, which means this trap was crafted by Karl specifically to target the Heir to the Sacred Blood."

Li Haoran stood, the burning sting still throbbing in his fingertips. His Sacred Blood power was depleted, the birthmark on his palm fading to a dull, lifeless hue. "Karl knows we plan to raid Silvermoon Castle. He is weakening our forces before we even strike." His voice was hoarse with resolve.

"And he could trigger the curse precisely in our camp — which means there is a spy among us, perhaps even in our inner circle."

The words rippled like a stone dropped in still water; every gaze turned wary, scanning the faces of their allies with suspicion. Victoria's sword remained drawn, but now it pointed sharply at Samantha.

"This is your camp, your people. A spy infiltrated your defenses — explain yourself."

Samantha's face darkened, her scarlet gown fluttering sharply in the night breeze. "My camp's security is impenetrable. No spy of Karl's could have slipped in unless someone deliberately let them pass." Her eyes flicked coldly to Cole.

"Cole, you oversaw the camp's security details. Explain this breach."

All eyes locked onto Cole. He stepped slowly out of the shadows, the hood of his black robe sliding back to reveal a pale, gaunt face, a thin scar slicing his left eye socket, his gaze cold and unflinching.

"I set three layers of security per your orders, Lady Samantha — runic barriers, scent tracking, code recognition. There is no way the perimeter was breached." His voice was low, metallic, and devoid of emotion.

"Unless… the traitor is one of us with access to the core security protocols."

His implication hung heavy in the air, his gaze drifting pointedly between Samantha and Catherine. Li Haoran's suspicions flared; he recalled Cole's fighting style, eerily identical to Karl's death warriors, and his deliberate diversion toward Dawn Harbor weeks prior.

"You accuse Lady Samantha?" Li Haoran stepped in front of her, his jaw set with resolve. "Do not speak without solid proof."

"Proof?" Cole scoffed, yanking back the sleeve of his robe to reveal a tiny runic mark on his wrist, glowing with faint black light that matched Karl's dark magic aura perfectly.

"I found this carved into the camp's runic barrier while setting security. Someone altered the barrier's commands with dark magic to let Karl's spy pass freely — and only you, Lady Samantha, and your most trusted confidants have access to the core."

Samantha's face turned livid, her fingers tightening around the blood-crystal ring until it dug painfully into her flesh. "You lie! Only I know the barrier's core commands — no one could alter them without my leave!"

"Is that so?" Cole's eyes sharpened with malice, his gaze locking onto the bronze casket in her hand. "Then explain why the power in your Barrier Breaker Box shares the exact same dark origin as Karl's blood curse."

"I smelled it earlier — that rot and decay, it is identical to the curse's residual stench."

Li Haoran jolted. He focused on the casket again, and sure enough, he detected a familiar ripple of dark magic — matching the blood curse's aura perfectly. Had Samantha truly betrayed them?

A muffled gasp of pain cut through the tension. Catherine clutched her abdomen, her face draining of all color, her body trembling violently. "Catherine!" Li Haoran caught her at once, feeling the faint, frantic thrashing of the child within her womb.

"What is wrong? Speak to me."

"It is… the curse's power." Catherine's voice was faint, agony etched into every line of her violet eyes. "It is reaching the child… there is a trace of the curse in my blood too."

Stunned, deafening silence fell. Catherine was a pureblood noble, with no direct blood contact to Karl's faction in years — how could the curse be inside her?

A sinister, triumphant smile curled Cole's lips, cold malice glinting in his eyes. "Because the curse's true medium is not your Sacred Blood, Li Haoran, nor Samantha's Barrier Breaker Box. It is you, Lady Catherine." He spoke slowly, savoring the chaos he had sown.

"Karl planted the curse's seed in your mother's blood when she was burned at the stake, passing it down through generations — and your pregnancy has awakened it fully.

When the child is born, not only will you and it become Karl's mindless puppets — every vampire who has ever shared blood with you will be devoured by the curse, consumed from the inside out."

The revelation struck like thunder, leaving the group reeling in shock. Catherine staggered back, disbelief and despair flooding her gaze. "Impossible… my mother was executed by the Elder Council, not by Karl's hand!"

"The Elder Council?" Cole sneered with contempt. "Karl has infiltrated the Council for decades, pulling their strings like puppets. Your mother's death was his plot from start to finish.

He waited centuries for this day — for you to bear the Sacred Blood Heir's child, to use the hybrid fetus's unique power to taint and corrupt the entire vampire race."

Li Haoran held Catherine tightly, rage boiling in his chest. He channeled his remaining Sacred Blood power to suppress the curse in her veins, only to find it stubborn and insidious, a rot that clung to her very bones and refused to be banished.

"Where is Karl? When does his ritual begin?" His voice was a suppressed roar, Sacred Blood power gilding his eyes with a faint, fierce golden hue.

"Silvermoon Castle, at the break of dawn." Cole's voice turned icy, dripping with triumph. "He will use your child's pure blood to complete the final step of the blood pact before the sun rises."

Suddenly, Cole's body convulsed violently, blue blood spilling from the corner of his mouth. He stared down in disbelief at his chest — a black dagger had pierced through from his back, the hilt clutched tightly in Samantha's hand.

"You…"

Samantha's eyes were frigid and unyielding, a few drops of blue blood splattering her scarlet gown like blooming crimson plum blossoms. "A lapdog of Karl's has no right to sow discord and lies in this camp." She ripped the dagger free in one swift motion, and Cole's body crumpled to the ground, blue blood pooling around his wound until his breath stilled completely.

But in his final moments, Cole's lips moved, as if whispering a final, damning message. The runic mark on his wrist flared bright black, a wisp of smoke rising from it to take the shape of a tiny bat, darting fast toward Silvermoon Castle before anyone could stop it.

"No! He has sent word ahead!" Victoria shouted, her silver sword pointed at the distant castle spires glinting in the moonlight. "We must move at once — if we delay, all is lost!"

Li Haoran held the weakened Catherine, watching the bat vanish into the night, a sharp, unshakable sense of dread coiling in his gut. How much of Cole's words were truth? Was the curse in Catherine truly tied to her mother's death?

Had Samantha killed Cole to silence him, or to protect her own treachery?

What chilled him most was the low, resonant chime drifting from Silvermoon Castle in the distance — a haunting melody matching the hymn he had heard in Eldred's illusion, woven with eerie dark magic, as if summoning an unholy force from the depths.

Catherine leaned against Li Haoran, her breath shallow and fragile, but her violet eyes blazed with unbreakable resolve. "Truth or lie… we march on Silvermoon Castle. For the child. For all the vampires oppressed by Karl's tyranny. We must stop him, no matter the cost."

Li Haoran nodded, pushing his doubts aside for the sake of the mission. He turned to Samantha and Victoria, his gaze unwavering and fierce.

"We move. The frontal feint remains unchanged; Catherine and I will infiltrate via the secret passage. Samantha, you will hold Karl's outer forces at bay. Victoria, lead your warriors to pin down the vampire hunters. We rendezvous at the Ritual Hall at all costs."

No one hesitated. The rebel army assembled swiftly, marching through the shadowed Blackwood Forest toward Silvermoon Castle under the cover of night. Every heart burned with determination, yet a lingering, cold doubt clung to them all — was Cole's death the end of this scheme?

Or merely another layer of Karl's deadly trap?

Suddenly, the child in Catherine's womb writhed violently again, a faint golden glow seeping from her abdomen, resonating perfectly with the Sacred Blood power in Li Haoran's palm. Tucked within the soft golden light was a thin, wispy black thread — a mark of the blood curse, or some unknown, ancient power, stirring silently in the dark.

Dawn drew near, the sharp silhouette of Silvermoon Castle sharpening in the fading night. A battle that would decide the fate of the entire vampire race was about to begin. And the secrets hidden in the shadows, like the insidious blood curse itself, wrapped around every heart, waiting to be unravelled.
