William began walking back toward where he'd left the fox girls on guard, carrying the demon wolf carefully.
Several fox girls emerged from the forest perimeter, their eyes enormous as they took in the destruction.
"M-Master William!" one gasped, staring at the crater. "What happened?!"
"A proper fight," William said simply. "Return to your posts. Make sure no one approaches this area, the residual energy is dangerous."
"But Master William, you're injured—"
"I'm fine. These are minor." William adjusted his grip on the demon wolf. "Now go."
The fox girls bowed and scattered back to their positions, though they kept glancing back at the crater in shock.
William made his way back toward his cave. The afternoon sun was beginning its descent, casting long shadows. The demon wolf in his arms drifted in and out of consciousness.
"I'm not going to kill you," William said matter-of-factly. "You're more useful alive."
Demon wolf girl's eyes opened again, confused and suspicious. "Why..."
"Because warriors who can push me that far don't grow so easily in this area," William replied. "And because I'd rather have strong subordinates than strong corpses."
After hearing William's words, the demon wolf girl's tension seemed to fade at last. The weight on her shoulders slipped away, and she lost consciousness again, this time with a faint, relieved expression on her face.
Before reaching his cave, William could see it in the distance. He entered where Arisu, Alice, Marigold, Serena, and the others were waiting.
They immediately gasped seeing his disheveled appearance and injuries.
"Master William!" Arisu rushed forward with Alice right behind, their faces pale with worry.
"What happened?!" Alice's voice rose in pitch.
"Just a bit more excitement than planned," William said, though he did lean slightly against Arisu. "Nothing I couldn't handle."
Marigold and Serena stared at the demon wolf, then at William's condition, then back at the wolf. The implications were clear.
William handed the demon wolf over to the two fox girls, giving them precise instructions. "Bind her securely, but tend to her wounds. She's a prisoner. I'll question her myself once she's stable."
The fox girls exchanged glances but bowed. "Yes, Master William."
A lavish dinner was already prepared on the table, all meat.
William moved to the table and sat down, noting the ache in his muscles. He looked at Serena with tired eyes. "Serena, please continue hunting daily from now on. Today's exertion means I'll need substantial meals to recover properly."
"Yes, of course, Master William!" Serena replied immediately.
Though Marigold beside her felt envious, when she thought of her own position, she also found comfort in her heart. But she still had an instinctive desire to go out hunting and fighting, because only through continuous combat would she keep growing stronger.
William saw Marigold's state at a glance, so he spoke again. "If Marigold wants to go hunting with Serena and the others, there's no problem. You know Rika, right? In the future, she'll be under your command, and you can have Rika as a substitute when you're away."
