The frog opened its mouth and released a ball of acidic spit at Mater.
The black cat tried to use Desperation Scream to push the ball of spit. This time it worked. The acidic substance was diverted and flew away.
"I can redirect its ranged attack with Desperation Scream. I can't push it with this spell though."
The frog was somewhat afraid of the little creature that attacked it. It couldn't understand how this small black cat could cause it so much pain.
So it decided to stay in place and spat out green slime non-stop.
Balls of acidic slime flew at Mater. The black cat danced around in the air on his book to avoid the slime.
"Trying to be a coward, huh? Not a chance."
Mater flew directly at the frog. The frog immediately spat out a ball of slime at Mater.
Mater opened his mouth wide and released a shockwave. The shockwave diverted the ball away, allowing him to fly straight to the frog.
The frog panicked. It spat two more times then turned its body and jumped away.
"Heh. You have fallen into my trap!"
Mater lowered down, avoiding the green slime. He got under the frog while it was in mid-air.
A Desperation Scream was released, pushing the thick slime layer under the frog's belly out of the way. Then, two Nether Spheres dug into its skin.
The frog bellowed. Its body leaned to a side while in mid-air.
The frog slammed on the sewer and fell down sideways. The Nether Spheres dug into its internal organs. Black blood flooded out from the open wounds.
"Chains of Shadow!"
Black chains reached out from the darkness and restrained the frog. Mater expected the spell to be less effective because of the frog's big size.
The black cat flew above its head and waited for his spell to cool down. The frog writhed underneath, trying to break free of the black chains.
When the spell's cool-down was over, Mater used the same combination as before.
He got close to the frog and used Desperation Scream to push the slime away then shot two Nether Spheres down its head.
The purple spheres dug into the giant frog's head. More black blood flooded out.
As Mater expected, Chains of Shadow was less effective. Only after six seconds, the frog was able to break free.
But Mater was already able to fire two more Nether Spheres at the opening above its head. Two more holes were carved out of its skin.
The frog jumped up, intending to crush Mater to the ceiling.
The black cat flew the book away just in time. The entire cave shook like there was an earthquake.
"That is too close."
Mater extended the distance to wait for his spell cool-down. The frog attacked him relentlessly with its acidic slime.
But the far distance allowed Mater to effortlessly dodged the attack.
He danced around in the air until Chains of Shadow reached its cool-down.
"It's time!" Mater used the restraining spell again, holding the frog in place.
Then he got close to the frog.
The chains forced the frog's head down. As it couldn't lift its head, Mater wasn't attacked.
He got close to the frog and used Desperation Scream and Nether Shot. Mater attacked the same spot that he had carved out the four holes before.
Two Nether Spheres went into those four holes, digging into the frog's brain.
Blood soaked the eyes of the frog. It squirmed more aggressively but was unable to break free of the chains.
As the chains were about to disappear, Mater released another pair of Nether Spheres, attacking the same spot as before.
The Nether Spheres went inside the frog without any obstacles. It wrecked the frog's head, ending its life.
The giant green frog fell to the side. Black blood poured out of its head. Its mouth opened wide and its long tongue faltered to the stink sewage drain.
"I have succeeded once again!"
Mater didn't waste any time to locate the Chaos Stone and dug them out of the frog.
One more time, a tiny red string was severed. It retreated back to the direction of the ritual.
"Four more Chaos Stones… These are enough for me to reach level 3."
Mater ignored the red string and found a dry platform to land. He swallowed the four Chaos Stones.
Inside his body, eight spheres of pure red spun around his heart.
"Level 3. Here I come!"
The spheres gathered speed and spun more quickly. They released pure dark red Chaos to Mater's heart. The Chaos was pumped by his heart to all corners of his body, infusing his blood vessels with more magic.
"1200 kilometers!"
"1250 kilometers!"
"1300 kilometers!"
"1350 kilometers!"
"1400 kilometers!"
"1450 kilometers!"
"1500 kilometers!"
"Level 3!"
"1550 kilometers!"
A dark red aura enveloped the cat as he reached level 3. His entire being was ascended once more. Everything became clearer and less restricted. His capacity for storing magic went up a level.
The Dark Grimoire flipped to the seventh page, ready to be inscribed with another spell.
The black cat meowed loudly. Its entire body shuddered because of the good feeling.
"Submission Seal is now available. I can also inscribe a sixth spell on the Dark Grimoire!"
Currently, Mater had five spells.
[Chain of Shadow]
[Effect]: Can restrain any corporeal or non-corporeal being for 12 seconds. Must have shadow or darkness nearby.
[Cooldown]: 30 seconds
[Desperation Scream]
[Effect]: A huge scream that can push any corporeal and non-corporeal beings up to 5 meters away. The beings must be in front of you in a 3-meter radius for the spell to be effective.
[Cooldown]: 5 seconds
[Page of Imprisonment]
[Effect]: You can imprison any non-corporeal being in the Dark Grimoire. Each non-corporeal being takes the space of a page. The act of imprisonment can be resisted. Once imprisoned, non-corporeal beings lose all their power until release.
[Cooldown]: None
[Chaos Eyes]
[Effect]: You are able to see the physical form of Chaos and any traces it left behind.
[Cooldown]: 3 seconds
[Nether Shot]
[Effect]: Can fire up to 2 spherical projectiles consecutively. The projectile is made of energy originated from the Netherworld, capable of harming the living, the dead, and the spirit.
[Cooldown]: 3 seconds
"Hmm. Chains of Shadow has a disabling effect. Desperation Scream to attack and push back. Page of Imprisonment to seal wraith away. Chaos Eyes is purely a utility spell. Nether Shot is a pure offensive tool.
If I want to enslave the bloodwraith, I need to weaken its mind enough for the seal to do its job.
Chains of Shadow can root an enemy but can't weaken its mind. My sixth spell needs to be a psychic spell."
Mater dug into his mind and remembered all the spells that could be used to help him enslave the bloodwraith.
"There are two spells that I can use.
Crow's Call. This spell affects all non-alive beings. So even those possessed corpses would also be affected.
Dark Whispers. This spell affects all beings, dead or alive. But it had no offensive ability at all. Simply an influencing spell that makes the mind of the target to be more gullible.
Which one should I choose?"
