The midnight air of the giant island was crisp enough to bite, carrying the sharp scent of frost and high-altitude pine down from the northern peaks. Norwell D. Giovanni moved through the shadows of the coastal village with a fluid, silent grace that proved his recovery was nearly complete. At eighty percent health, the stiffness in his stride was almost entirely gone, replaced by the coiled, lethal energy of a predator returning to peak form.
Slung over his right shoulder was a heavy burlap sack. It didn't contain gold or looted treasure; instead, it thumped rhythmically against his back with the dense weight of freshly unearthed earth. Inside were a dozen pristine, glowing specimens of Norn-Lotus roots. A legendary, hyper-potent medicinal flora that only grew in the pristine, isolated soil of Gaban's interior valley.
Giovanni stepped onto the massive wooden porch of the medical longhouse. The grand structure was dark, save for a single, flickering amber glow radiating from the high glass windows of the apothecary wing.
Pushing the towering timber door open with a soft nudge of his shoulder, he walked inside. The ambient warmth of the indoor hearth washed over him, smelling of dried lavender, crushed eucalyptus, and boiling water. Sitting at a gargantuan workbench under the dim light of a whale-oil lamp was Gerd. The young giantess was hunched over a brass mortar and pestle, her long blonde hair tied back in a messy bun. Her shoulders slumped with exhaustion, her eyelids heavy as she tried to grind down a meager handful of withered coastal herbs.
"You're going to put yourself to sleep before you finish grinding that dust, Doc," Giovanni said, his voice a low, casual purr that cut through the silence of the room.
Gerd gasped, her massive form flinching in surprise as she dropped the pestle. She spun around on her stool, her wide, blue eyes locking onto the blonde pirate. "Giovanni! You... you shouldn't be sneaking up on a lady like that! And what are you doing out of bed? I told you your deep muscle tissue still needs—"
"Save the lecture, Gerd. I already got an earful from another giantess today," Giovanni chuckled, walking forward and swinging the heavy burlap sack off his shoulder. He dropped it onto the edge of her workbench with a loud, resounding thud. "Open it."
Frowning with a mix of confusion and lingering irritation, Gerd reached out with her massive, elegant fingers and untied the coarse twine. As she pulled the canvas back, her breath hitched completely. Her exhaustion vanished, replaced by absolute, paralyzing shock.
The large, pale roots inside the sack practically radiated vitality, their skin laced with faint, silver veins that pulsed under the dim lamplight.
"This... this is Norn-Lotus," Gerd whispered, her voice trembling as she carefully lifted one of the roots with two fingers, treating it as if it were made of spun glass. "They don't grow anywhere near the coast. The local vanguards haven't been able to harvest these in years because the interior valleys are too hazardous. I... I only mentioned how scarce these were to the head matron the other night while you were asleep. How did you...?"
"I have my ways," Giovanni said, leaning his back against the edge of the workbench, crossing his arms with a casual, self-assured smirk. "You saved my life, Doc. And you've been working yourself to the bone trying to patch me up and the local guards with third-rate coastal weeds. Consider this an upgrade to your inventory."
Gerd stared down at the bundle, then at the human youth standing beside her table. A profound, overwhelming warmth bloomed in her chest. For all the rumors of the "ruthless, arrogant Red-Haired rookie" that circulated through the Grand Line, the man standing before her had risked the dangerous, untamed wilds of Elbaf's interior just because he had overheard her complaining about a shortage of medicine.
"Thank you, Giovanni," she said softly, a deep, genuine smile breaking across her beautiful face, her cheeks flushing a faint, endearing pink. "This... this will save countless lives."
"Don't get emotional on me now, Doc," Giovanni teased, his eyes flashing with amusement. "Come on. Grab a breather. The air inside here is choking me."
A few minutes later, the two sat out on the massive stone balcony of the longhouse, overlooking the darkened expanse of the Elbaf coastline. Above them, the northern sky was a majestic, swirling canvas of cosmic violet and emerald starlight, dominated by the colossal, sweeping silhouette of Yggdrasil's upper branches.
The physical size difference between them was staggering. Giovanni sat cross-legged on the wide stone railing, while Gerd sat flat on the balcony floor beside him, her knees drawn to her chest. Yet, as the cool night wind drifted over them, that physical disparity seemed to completely evaporate, replaced by a rare, deeply earned emotional stillness.
"I didn't always want to be just a village doctor," Gerd said quietly, her eyes reflecting the distant glimmer of the stars. She rested her chin on her knees. "In Elbaf, glory is everything. Our history is written in blood, iron, and the conquest of the sea. When I was young, everyone expected me to train as a vanguard, to carry a shield and make the world tremble. But when I looked at our history, all I saw was a cycle of endless destruction. I want to change that. I want to become a master healer. Someone who can sail the outer seas not to conquer lands, but to master medicine and bring a legacy of preservation back to my people. I want to show the world that Elbaf can give life, not just take it."
Giovanni listened in silence, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the dark ocean met the starlit sky. The casual, mocking edge of his persona melted away, revealing the cold, unyielding depth of his true self.
"A legacy of preservation, huh?" Giovanni murmured, a bittersweet smile tugging at his lips. "That's a noble dream, Gerd. Most people out here are just clawing for a piece of the dirt."
"What about you, Giovanni?" Gerd turned her head, looking at him intently. "What drives a man like you? You carry a spirit that refuses to bow to anyone. Even our elders. You wield the sword of the Pirate King himself. Is it just fame? Cruelty?"
"Cruelty is for weak men who need to feel big," Giovanni said flatly, his eyes hardening into twin pools of molten metal. "My motivation is much simpler: absolute sovereignty. I grew up under the shadow of a legacy. My father's legacy. He wasn't a man who conquered nations or accumulated mountains of gold. But he was a man who lived completely, unapologetically untamed. He bowed to no king and carved his own path through the village until the day he left. He left behind a standard of absolute freedom."
He reached down, his fingers gently brushing the dark patterned guard of Ace.
"But the world doesn't like free men, Gerd," Giovanni continued, his voice dropping into a chilling, low register. "The Marines want to chain you. The World Government wants to erase you. The Emperors want you to kneel beneath their flags. So, my goal is to build a strength so absolute, a willpower so unshakeable, that no power in heaven or earth can ever dictate my path. I don't want to rule the world. I want to ensure that the world can never rule me."
Gerd stared at him, a shiver running down her spine. It wasn't a shiver of fear, but of profound reverence. In that moment, looking at the lone blonde youth bathed in the northern starlight, she didn't see a reckless pirate. She saw a man carrying the terrifying, beautiful weight of an absolute king. The emotional resonance between them hung in the quiet night air, a silent, unbreakable understanding forged between two entirely different worlds.
As the final remnants of midnight faded into the bleak, grey mist of dawn, the atmosphere on the rocky southern cliffs of Elbaf turned suffocatingly grim.
A massive, gothic pirate vessel with tattered black sails and a grotesque, bat-like figurehead drifted silently into the jagged crags of the southern shore.
Stepping off the gangplank and onto the sacred stone of Elbaf was a towering, monstrous silhouette.
Gecko Moria in his prime era was not yet the lazy, morbidly obese broken man of the future. He was a tall, imposing figure with an unnaturally long neck, pale white skin, and a row of jagged, red stitches running down his throat. Clad in an extravagant, high-collared dark coat and pointed boots, his eyes burned with a toxic mix of wounded pride, psychotic ambition, and pure, unadulterated malice. Behind him, a small, battered vanguard of his crew slunk through the mist, their weapons drawn and eyes twitching with paranoia.
"Kishishishi...!" Moria's iconic, high-pitched laugh echoed off the jagged cliffs, sounding like the screech of a dying crow. "What a miserable, oversized rock this is. To think I had to flee all the way to the land of the brutes."
A few hundred yards up the cliffside path, three giant woodcutters were beginning their morning shift. They were simple, traditional laborers, carrying massive iron felling axes and wearing simple leather tunics. They stopped in their tracks as the heavy, malicious aura of the Gecko Pirates polluted the morning air.
"Hold, travelers!" the lead woodcutter rumbled, stepping forward and lowering his massive axe across his chest. "This is the southern territory of Elbaf. Uninvited human vessels are not permitted to dock within these crags. State your business or return to the sea."
Moria didn't even slow his stride. He continued walking forward, his long shadow stretching across the grey stone like a living stain. A sinister, patronizing grin split his face, revealing rows of sharp, needle-like teeth.
"Business? Kishishishi! I don't do business with cattle," Moria sneered, tilting his head back to look up at the three giants. "I am looking for someone. A little blonde brat. A human rookie who goes by the name Norwell D. Giovanni. I know he washed up on this miserable island. Tell me where he is hiding his pathetic, bleeding face, and I might let you keep your pathetic lives."
The three woodcutters exchanged confused, stoic glances. They were isolated laborers who spent months at a time in the southern forests; they had no knowledge of the medical longhouse or the human guests resting on the western coast.
"We know of no such human," the lead giant stated firmly, his voice echoing with the stubborn pride of his race. "No blonde brat resides in our sector. Turn your ship around, pirate. Elbaf does not harbor fugitives, nor do we answer to the demands of arrogant humans."
Moria's smile instantly vanished, his face contorting into an expression of profound, psychotic rage. The humiliation of his recent failures rushed to the surface of his mind, twisting his logic into something entirely monstrous.
"You don't know?" Moria whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "You dare lie to me? To Gecko Moria?! Kishishishi... Ignorance is a sin on my sea, you oversized apes! If you won't give me his location, then your existence is entirely worthless to me!"
Before the giants could even raise their massive iron weapons, Moria snapped his fingers.
"Tsugaru!"
His own shadow instantly detached from his boots, shifting into a swarm of razor-sharp, black bat-like entities that tore through the mist at blinding speed. The shadow bats swarmed the legs of the three giants, pinning their massive reflections to the stone ground with absolute, supernatural force. The woodcutters roared in frustration, discovering that their colossal physical strength was entirely useless. Their bodies were completely paralyzed, anchored to the earth by their own trapped shadows.
Moria leaped into the air with surprising agility, reaching into his heavy coat and pulling out a colossal pair of rusted, iron-cutting scissors. The blades parted with a sickening, metallic screech.
"Let's see how proud you look without your souls!" Moria screamed, his eyes bloodshot with psychotic ecstasy.
With three fluid, devastating swings of his massive shears, Moria sliced through the air directly beneath the giants' feet.
SNIP. SNIP. SNIP.
A horrifying, ethereal scream echoed through the valley as the dark, living shadows of the three giant woodcutters were forcibly severed from their bodies. Moria caught the three writhing, oversized shadows in his left hand, laughing hysterically as the spiritual energy pulsed against his palm.
On the cliffside, the three giants collapsed to their knees. The loss of their shadows instantly drained their vitality, leaving them gasping, their massive frames trembling with a sudden, unnatural weakness.
Then, the sun broke through the eastern horizon.
The first, pristine rays of the morning dawn struck the rocky southern cliffs.
"What... what is happening?!" one of the giants gasped, horror cutting through his booming voice as he looked down at his hand.
The moment the sunlight touched their shadowless skin, a brilliant, terrifying blue flame erupted across their bodies. There was no smoke, no heat, only a rapid, agonizing dissolution. The giants screamed in pure, unadulterated agony as their colossal flesh, bone, and iron armor began to rapidly disintegrate, turning into fine, white ash that scattered into the cold morning wind. Within a matter of seconds, three of Elbaf's proudest traditional warriors were completely erased from existence, leaving nothing behind but their hollow iron axes clattering against the bare stone.
Moria stood amidst the falling ash, his face illuminated by the rising sun, his shadow safely restored to his feet while he held his new prize. He turned his gaze toward the distant, towering peaks of the island's interior, his expression twisting into a mask of pure, unbridled malice.
"Kishishishi! Did you see that, Giovanni?!" Moria roared into the wind, his voice echoing across the entire southern coast. "I know you're hiding somewhere on this rock! If you won't come out to face me, I'll tear the shadow out of every single giant on this island! I'll paint the mountains of Elbaf in white ash until you have no choice but to crawl out of your hole!"
