Chapter 12 - The Outside World Takes Measure

TIME PERIOD: FORTY DAYS UNTIL THE EMERGENCE

In every corner of Gaia, the entire planet feels the shattering of the barrier that separated the cottage from the rest of the world.

In the lands of Adroz, nearing purified territory, the shattering causes a major city and one below the surface to shake violently.

The sound emitted from the barrier's collapse releases an ear-piercing sound that sounds like the sky is crumbling.

In the Giant Forest, its massive trees topple and rivers alter their courses, leaving those that reside scrambling to protect their sacred groves.

Meanwhile, in the deserts of Ast, massive sandstorms are unleashed, burying entire settlements under mountains of sand.

Even the towering peaks of Wazion's mountains tremble, causing avalanches that devastate the villages nestled in their shadows.

As the chaos unfolds across Gaia, our story shifts to an ethereal courtroom suspended in the void between reality itself.

Here, men and women dawning different colored oni masks gather to deliberate the devastation caused by the shattering.

These men and women call themselves void seekers, beings that have and will give up anything to further understand the nature of the void and all the power it holds.

Their voices resonate with authority, echoing through the timeless expanse as they weigh the fate of those affected by the upheaval.

The void seekers debate the consequences of the shattering, their masks glowing faintly with each word.

Their deliberations determine whether to restore balance or allow the chaos to reshape the world.

As the void seekers continue their intense debate, the ethereal courtroom is suddenly illuminated by the appearance of large doors, once invisible, now swinging open with a resounding boom.

Through a blinding light steps a woman in a flowing red silk dress and wearing a lace eye mask that adds an air of mystery, faintly revealing her red shimmering eyes underneath, her presence commanding immediate attention.

Her entrance is both graceful and powerful, as if she carries with her the weight of a faraway realm, and the void seekers pause, their glowing masks turning towards her in anticipation.

The void seekers whisper among themselves, their voices a hushed murmur that reverberates through the courtroom.

"Queen Selena," one of them breathes, eyes widening behind their mask.

"A powerful void witch here?," another adds, the words tinged with awe and caution, as they speculate on the significance of her unexpected arrival and the role she might play in their deliberations.

The woman in the red dress takes her place among the others, her eyes scanning the room with an intensity that suggests she is both a participant and a judge in this celestial assembly.

A tall, lengthy man with teal-colored skin lounges comfortably in his seat, his legs propped up on a chair above the woman in red.

His attire, reminiscent of a magician's, exudes a fabulous sense of style with intricate patterns and shimmering threads.

Unlike the others, his oni mask covers only 75% of his face, leaving his mouth and left eye exposed, which twinkle with a mischievous glint as he observes Selena's entrance with a knowing smile.

Selena exudes regal authority as she crosses her legs and rests her hands elegantly on her lap.

"Ah, Selena," the man with the teal skin drawls, his voice smooth and teasing as he leans forward slightly, "I see you've decided to grace us with your presence just in time for the grand spectacle."

Selena meets his gaze with a cool, unwavering stare, her lips curling into a faint, enigmatic smile.

"Spectacle or not, Dark Merchant," she replies calmly, her voice carrying an air of quiet confidence, "some of us are here to ensure that the consequences of our actions are not taken lightly."

Her words hang in the air, a gentle reminder of the gravity of the situation, even amidst the theatrics.

The Dark Merchant chuckles softly, his exposed eye gleaming with amusement.

"Ever the voice of reason, aren't you, Selena?" he replies, his tone both playful and dismissive. "But let's not overestimate our involvement in this celestial dance. Surely, the universe has its own ways of unfolding, with or without our meddling."

Selena tilts her head slightly, her expression thoughtful but probing.

"And what makes you so certain," she inquires, "that none among us have had a hand in the recent turmoil sweeping across the globe?"

The Dark Merchant smirks, his voice laced with a cryptic charm as he responds, "Oh, Selena, it's not certainty I claim, but rather the delightful unpredictability of chaos that assures me. After all, who better to orchestrate chaos than the universe itself?"

He leans back with a sly grin, eyes dancing with a hint of conspiracy.

"But if I were to wager a guess," he continues, his voice dripping with intrigue, "I'd say Roena and Malevolent are weaving something monumental. Their schemes have a way of shifting the very foundations of our existence, don't you think?"

Selena narrows her gaze, sensing the layers of truth hidden within his words.

"And what if this chaos you speak of is merely a façade, a smokescreen for the true architects behind the shattering?" She presses, her voice steady yet probing.

The Dark Merchant's smile widens, a knowing gleam in his eye as he replies, "Ah, Selena, sometimes the most profound truths are hidden in plain sight, waiting for the right moment to reveal their dance."

Before Selena can probe further, their conversation is abruptly interrupted by the sudden appearance of a short woman in a stylish tuxedo at the center of the courtroom.

Instantly, the room falls silent, all eyes drawn to the mysterious figure.

In her hand, she holds a tattered scroll, its ancient aura commanding attention and sparking a collective curiosity among the gathered.

The tension in the room is palpable as the audience shifts in their seats, a murmur of anticipation rippling through the crowd.

Some lean forward, eager to catch a glimpse of the scroll, while others exchange hushed whispers, speculating about the woman's identity and the significance of her sudden appearance.

Even the most stoic faces reveal a flicker of intrigue, as everyone senses that whatever is about to unfold may change everything they thought they knew.

The woman slowly unfurls the scroll, her movements deliberate and filled with purpose.

As the parchment unrolls, ancient symbols and cryptic inscriptions are revealed, glowing faintly in the dim light.

She holds it high for all to see, her gaze steady and unwavering as if daring anyone to challenge the power contained within its fragile pages.

Clearing her throat, she takes a deep breath, allowing the room to settle into a hushed silence.

Her fingers trace the symbols with a reverence that suggests both familiarity and respect, as if acknowledging the weight of the words she is about to speak.

With a calm, commanding voice, she begins to recite the ancient text, each word resonating with an authority that captivates her audience.

"Two nights ago, an event known as the shattering unleashed chaotic energies from the void, fracturing the carefully orchestrated balance of power maintained by the six families and void seekers. In a single devastating moment, our grip on the world's fate crumbled, as the disruption shattered alliances and exposed vulnerabilities, leaving the universe and Gaia now teetering on the brink of an uncertain future. The one behind this supernatural event is a young sleeping god whose name is Sam Aka. Unaware of his profound impact and the chain reaction set off, now this young apex predator walks among the land of the living. It is imperative that we find Sam Aka before his powers awaken fully," she continues, her voice steady yet urgent. "If possible, we must guide him, for if left unchecked, his potential could either restore balance or bring about our total destruction. The fate of our world hinges on our next actions."

The short woman carefully rolls the scroll back up, her hands moving with a practiced grace, as if sealing away the immense power of the words within.

The courtroom remains silent, the weight of her revelation hanging heavily in the air, as individuals exchange anxious glances, grappling with the gravity of the situation.

A murmur of disbelief ripples through the courtroom as the revelation sinks in, the name "Aka" igniting a wave of recognition and fear.

Gasps echoed from the corners of the room as the realization dawned on the attendees.

Whispers of Eudora and Dorian, once thought to be mere legends themselves, having a child sent shockwaves through the assembly, leaving many questioning how such a secret could have been kept.

The gravity of the revelation deepened as they pondered the implications of Sam Aka's lineage, a child born of myth and now a pivotal figure in their uncertain future.

Murmurs gradually rise, a buzz of concern and determination, as the gathered crowd begins to comprehend the monumental task ahead of them.

Then—

The courtroom doors groaned.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

But with the slow, ancient sound of something that had not opened willingly.

The entire chamber quieted.

Even the floating lanterns suspended above the courtroom dimmed slightly.

Two figures entered.

The first…

Tall.

Pale.

Draped in layered robes dark enough to resemble funeral cloth more than ceremonial attire.

Their long brown hair rested against their shoulders untouched by the shifting void winds surrounding the chamber.

Half-lidded eyes scanned the courtroom with neither fear nor curiosity.

Only exhaustion.

Morrow.

Several seekers instinctively straightened in their seats.

Not because they radiated power.

Because they radiated surrender.

The kind that frightened people more than anger ever could.

One seeker quietly lowered their gaze the moment Morrow passed by, as if eye contact itself felt disrespectful.

Beside them walked a towering woman with a massive mechanical arm wrapped in heavy black cloth and iron restraints.

Every step she took echoed through the chamber with brutal weight.

Dark hair fell messily across one side of her face while the exposed side revealed a stare sharp enough to cut through stone itself.

Omen.

Unlike Morrow, she did not look tired.

She looked prepared.

Prepared for violence.

Prepared for loss.

Prepared for the moment everyone else failed.

Several seekers visibly stiffened at the sight of them.

One muttered beneath their breath:

"Wonderful. The rest of the vultures arrived."

The Dark Merchant leaned back slightly in his seat, a widening smile spreading beneath his partial oni mask.

"Please," he replied smoothly while spreading his arms slightly, "vultures arrive after death."

His exposed eye glimmered faintly.

"Personally, I tend to arrive a little earlier than that."

A few nervous laughs escaped throughout the chamber.

Most did not laugh at all.

The Dark Merchant casually glanced back toward Selena before leaning slightly forward.

Selena's red eyes narrowed faintly behind her lace mask.

"Seems the rest of your friends are here."

The merchant softly chuckled.

"We are a rather rag-tag trio, you know."

Morrow walked with an impossible calm, their layered robes absorbing the dim light of the floating lanterns, while Omen's massive mechanical arm emitted a low, rhythmic metallic groan with every heavy step.

Omen stopped near the railing, her sharp gaze cutting through the space between them.

She folded her massive mechanical arm across her chest, entirely unimpressed.

"Perish the thought."

She visibly rolled her eyes.

Morrow didn't respond to the theatrics.

Instead, they glided toward the edge of the balcony, their half-lidded eyes drifting toward the fractured reflections floating in the void below.

The dark merchant watched them, his exposed left eye glinting with amusement as he shifted his attention back to Queen Selena.

"A Sleeping God awakens."

His gaze slowly shifted across the courtroom.

"The Purified are moving assets."

A pause.

"And suddenly everyone remembers how fragile civilization really is."

His smile sharpened slightly.

"How nostalgic."

Selena studied him carefully.

Even now, with the courtroom consumed by uncertainty, the merchant looked entertained.

That alone unsettled her.

The Dark Merchant suddenly offered her his hand.

"Walk with us."

Selena didn't move immediately.

His head tilted slightly.

"There are conversations better spoken away from crowds pretending not to panic."

The surrounding seekers exchanged wary glances.

Selena rose slowly from her seat.

"What exactly are we discussing?"

The merchant's visible eye flickered with quiet amusement.

"That depends."

Selena folded her arms.

"Fine, I'll start then. You seem remarkably calm for someone who just learned a Sleeping God has entered the world."

"Entered?" he asked.

Selena takes his hand.

His visible eye glimmered.

"I suspect he's been here the entire time."

Selena frowned.

"What exactly do you believe he is?"

"A problem."

The answer did not come from the merchant.

It came from Omen.

The towering woman stood nearby with her massive mechanical arm folded across her chest.

"A Sleeping God always becomes a problem eventually."

The Dark Merchant chuckled.

"You make it sound inevitable."

Omen's expression remained unchanged.

"It usually is."

Silence followed.

Then Morrow spoke.

"I disagree."

The soft voice immediately drew attention.

The androgynous figure stood quietly near the edge of the balcony, eyes drifting toward the fractured reflections below.

"He is still a person."

The Dark Merchant smiled faintly.

"That distinction becomes difficult for people once enough power gets involved."

Morrow's expression didn't change.

"Only for those who stop looking."

Selena found herself studying them carefully.

Interesting.

Three perspectives.

Three completely different conclusions.

The Merchant saw possibility.

Omen saw danger.

Morrow saw suffering.

"And you?" Selena asked.

The Merchant tilted his head.

"Me?"

His smile widened.

"I think he's interesting."

Omen groaned audibly.

"Of course you do."

The group move to a more secluded area.

Inside this room, a wide window gives way to the courtroom's center and other onlooking void seekers.

With the sound of a door closing behind them, their conversation continues.

"An unknown Sleeping God hidden from every major power on Gaia suddenly announces himself by shattering a barrier older than several governments."

The Merchant spread his hands dramatically.

"You must admit that's at least a little interesting."

"That's one word for it."

"It's my favorite word for it."

For the first time, a faint smile threatened to appear on Morrow's face.

Only threatened.

Then—

POP.

A burst of pale light erupted behind them.

The four turned simultaneously.

At the center of the courtroom, the short woman in the tuxedo had appeared once again.

Only this time she carried another scroll.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

The woman looked noticeably less comfortable holding this one.

Several Void Seekers exchanged uneasy glances.

One quietly muttered:

"No."

Another lowered their gaze.

The Dark Merchant's smile faded.

Interesting.

The woman carefully unfurled the ancient parchment.

The scroll trembled slightly.

Not from fear.

From power.

Ancient symbols illuminated themselves across the parchment.

The courtroom fell silent.

Then she began reading.

"There exists a second matter requiring immediate attention."

Her voice echoed through the chamber.

"Project Seventy-Four."

Several figures stiffened.

"The asset is currently being transported through the Giant Forest by Purified forces following the destruction of its previous containment facility during the Shattering."

The Merchant's visible eye narrowed slightly.

"The asset has been identified as Akusan."

A pause.

Then:

"Daughter of—"

The woman stopped.

For the first time since arriving, she hesitated.

The entire courtroom became still.

Even Selena noticed it.

The woman swallowed.

Then continued.

"Daughter of Anox."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Not a single voice spoke.

Not a single seeker moved.

Because some names did not belong to history.

Some names survived as warnings.

The woman continued reading.

"The subject was recovered following the collapse of Facility Seventeen."

A faint ripple moved through the chamber.

"Containment was lost for approximately four hours."

More silence.

"The subject was subsequently subdued by combined Purified intervention and placed under emergency transport protocols."

The Dark Merchant slowly crossed his arms.

His smile was gone now.

Interesting.

The woman continued.

"The current escort consists of one command unit, two scientific personnel, and thirty-six Purified soldiers."

Omen immediately frowned.

Thirty-six?

The woman continued reading.

"The transport route proceeds directly through the Giant Forest toward an undisclosed research location."

Omen looked toward the Dark Merchant.

The Merchant was already looking at her.

Both had reached the same conclusion.

Neither liked it.

Finally Omen spoke.

"That's not enough."

The courtroom turned toward her.

The woman paused her reading.

Omen stepped forward slightly.

"Repeat the escort size."

The woman glanced at the scroll.

"Thirty-six soldiers."

Omen's jaw tightened.

"That's not enough."

Several seekers exchanged confused looks.

One spoke.

"For a single prisoner?"

Omen slowly turned toward him.

The man immediately wished he hadn't spoken.

"A single prisoner?" she repeated.

Her mechanical arm emitted a low metallic groan.

"Either you've never heard the stories..."

Her eyes narrowed.

"...or you've convinced yourself they were exaggerations."

The chamber grew quiet once more.

The woman returned her attention to the scroll.

"The subject remains heavily restrained."

"The subject remains sedated."

"The subject remains classified as an extinction-level threat."

That landed heavily.

Yet Omen's expression only darkened further.

"Thirty-six."

She shook her head.

"No."

Morrow finally spoke.

Softly.

Quietly.

Yet somehow the entire chamber heard them.

"They are not transporting her."

The woman paused.

Selena turned toward Morrow.

"What do you mean?"

Morrow's eyes remained fixed on the scroll.

"Transportation implies protection."

Their expression remained unreadable.

"This sounds more like positioning."

The words settled heavily over the chamber.

The Dark Merchant's visible eye narrowed.

Positioning.

Interesting choice of word.

Very interesting.

Selena folded her arms.

"You believe the Purified want something to happen?"

Morrow didn't answer immediately.

When they finally did, their voice carried the weight of quiet certainty.

"I think they stopped seeing her as a person a long time ago."

Silence followed.

Then:

"I think people become careless when they stop seeing people."

For a moment nobody spoke.

The Merchant looked back toward the scroll.

Toward the numbers.

Toward the route.

Toward the timing.

His mind was already moving.

The Shattering.

Sam Aka.

The collapse of containment.

The Giant Forest.

Akusan.

The Purified.

All within days.

A coincidence.

Maybe.

The woman continued reading.

"The subject possesses confirmed lineage tracing directly to Anox."

A visible shudder moved through part of the courtroom.

Several seekers looked away.

One quietly touched a religious symbol hanging from their neck.

Another visibly paled.

The woman continued.

"Historical records estimate Anox's campaigns resulted in the deaths of over seventy percent of the known human population during the Sky Ruination."

No one interrupted.

No one challenged the number.

Which told Selena everything.

The number was probably real.

"The subject's biological father commanded the Aireon Conquest and maintained direct control over a draconic apex organism capable of atmospheric devastation."

Images surfaced within the minds of everyone present.

Burning cities.

Red skies.

Crimson lightning.

Entire civilizations erased beneath storms.

The woman lowered the scroll slightly.

"The subject remains the last known direct descendant of Anox."

The courtroom felt colder.

Then—

The Dark Merchant laughed.

Not loudly.

Not mockingly.

Thoughtfully.

Every eye inside the room turned toward him.

Even Omen frowned.

Selena narrowed her gaze.

"What is amusing?"

The Merchant slowly looked up.

Nothing about his expression seemed amused anymore.

That was what unsettled everyone.

Because he looked concerned.

Actually concerned.

His gaze drifted toward the void beyond the courtroom.

Toward nothing.

Toward patterns.

Toward possibilities.

"Nothing."

A pause.

His visible eye narrowed.

"That's what worries me."

The room remained silent.

The Merchant slowly pushed away from the railing.

"A Sleeping God appears."

One finger rose.

"The Purified move the daughter of Anox."

A second finger.

"The largest containment failure in decades occurs."

A third.

"The Giant Forest becomes the chosen route."

Another pause.

"The escort is insufficient."

Silence.

The Merchant's smile returned.

Small.

Thin.

Dangerous.

"And somehow..."

His gaze swept across the chamber.

"...everyone is treating these events like they're unrelated."

No one answered.

For the first time since arriving—

Morrow looked directly at him.

Omen's expression hardened.

Even Selena felt something cold settle in her stomach.

Because suddenly the individual events didn't feel random anymore.

They felt arranged.

The Merchant looked back toward the scroll.

Then toward the shattered reflections floating beyond the balcony.

And for the first time that evening—

He felt as though someone else might already be moving pieces across the board.

Silence lingered.

Not the comfortable kind.

The kind that forms when a realization enters a room before anyone is willing to acknowledge it.

Then Morrow spoke.

Softly.

"Talus."

The name cut through Selena like a knife.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Interesting.

The Dark Merchant sighed dramatically.

"You always ruin the mystery."

Morrow ignored the complaint.

Their half-lidded eyes remained fixed on the drifting reflections beyond the balcony.

"I think you're right."

That alone caused Omen to glance toward them.

Because Morrow rarely agreed with anyone.

Especially Talus.

The smile slowly faded from Talus' face.

"What part?"

Morrow was quiet for several moments.

When they finally spoke, their voice carried an unsettling certainty.

"I think someone is orchestrating this."

The words settled heavily over the balcony.

"The Shattering."

"Sam Aka."

"Akusan Vaeris."

"The Giant Forest."

"The timing."

Their gaze lowered slightly.

"None of it feels accidental."

Omen folded her arms.

"You think someone is manipulating events from behind the curtain."

"I think someone has been doing it for quite some time."

That answer chilled the air.

Because it implied planning.

Preparation.

Patience.

Talus slowly tapped a finger against the railing.

His mind was already racing.

The Purified.

The Six Families.

Void Seekers.

Governors.

The Choir.

Every major power on Gaia watched one another relentlessly.

Nothing of this scale should have gone unnoticed.

Yet somehow it had.

Which meant whoever was responsible wasn't operating outside the system.

They were operating inside it.

Hidden.

Talus quietly exhaled.

"Under the Purified's nose."

Morrow nodded.

"Under everyone's."

The realization settled like poison.

For perhaps the first time that evening, Talus looked genuinely troubled.

Not afraid.

Troubled.

Because hidden enemies could be fought.

Unknown enemies could be found.

But an enemy capable of manipulating multiple global events without attracting the attention of the Purified...

That was something else entirely.

Talus stared into the void.

Already searching through possibilities.

Already assembling names.

Already eliminating them.

Who benefits?

Who gains from Sam awakening?

Who gains from Akusan being moved?

Who gains from destabilizing the Giant Forest?

Who gains from chaos spreading across Gaia?

The list was disturbingly short.

And none of the answers comforted him.

Selena finally broke the silence.

"If you're correct..."

Her voice was measured.

"...then what exactly do we do with this information?"

The question hung there.

Practical.

Necessary.

Dangerous.

Talus immediately opened his mouth.

"I think we sho—"

"Don't."

Morrow's voice stopped him.

Talus blinked.

Omen raised an eyebrow.

Selena looked between them.

The rare interruption alone was unusual.

Talus slowly turned.

"What?"

Morrow finally lifted their eyes from the void.

For the first time since arriving, something changed within their expression.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something older.

Something sadder.

"You were about to lie."

Talus stared.

Then laughed once.

A short sound.

Humorless.

"You say that like it's unusual."

"It isn't."

Morrow's gaze never wavered.

"Which is why I stopped you."

Silence.

The air between them suddenly felt much heavier.

Selena watched carefully.

Something important was happening.

Something personal.

Talus folded his arms.

"Fine."

His visible eye narrowed.

"What do you think I was going to say?"

Morrow answered immediately.

"You were going to tell us we should investigate."

A pause.

"You were going to tell us we should be careful."

Another pause.

"You were going to tell us we should find the truth."

Talus' smile slowly disappeared.

Because every word was correct.

Morrow continued.

"But that's not what you want."

The room became deathly still.

Even Omen remained silent.

Because now they were hearing the truth.

Not the performance.

Not the merchant.

Not the mask.

Talus.

Morrow's voice softened.

"You don't care about stopping this."

The words weren't accusatory.

That somehow made them worse.

"You don't care if the world becomes safer."

"You don't care if balance is restored."

"You don't even care if Sam survives."

Talus looked away.

Morrow continued.

"You want to meet the person responsible."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Morrow's eyes never left him.

"Because for the first time in a very long time..."

Their voice dropped to nearly a whisper.

"...you've found someone capable of surprising you."

Nothing moved.

Nothing spoke.

Then slowly—

Very slowly—

A smile returned to Talus' face.

Not the Dark Merchant's smile.

Not the charming smile.

Not the theatrical smile.

This one was genuine.

And somehow far more unsettling.

Because Morrow was right.

Every word of it.

Talus looked out into the endless void and quietly admitted:

"...Maybe."

A pause.

Then:

"Now that's interesting."

Selena's eyes widened with a mix of awe and trepidation, her mind racing to process the implications of the prophecy and everything else discussed.

The playful glint in her eyes hardens into an unwavering focus, as if the revelation had unlocked a hidden layer of responsibility within her.

The facade she had worn so well falls away, revealing a woman ready to confront the challenges posed by Sam Aka and Akusan's existence with a newfound seriousness and dedication.

Eldon, the wise elder, strokes his long beard thoughtfully, his eyes reflecting both concern and a glimmer of hope as he contemplates the possibility of guiding the young god.

Beside him, Mara, a fierce fairy warrior, clenches her jaw in determination, her mind already strategizing the best way to track down Sam Aka and ensure his protection.

In the corner, the enigmatic sorceress Lyra remains silent, her gaze distant as she calculates the potential magical repercussions of the shattering and the steps needed to mitigate further disaster.

The dark merchant chuckles softly, breaking the tense silence.

"Well," he drawls, his voice smooth and calculating, "it seems our little dance with destiny begins now. Every decision we make from here on out will tip the scales, one way or another."

His words hang ominously in the air, and as his unsettling smile widens, a shiver runs through those gathered, the implications of his statement echoing in their minds.

Without a word, Selena strides toward the room's exit, her movements purposeful and resolute.

The others watch her go, aware that the path to saving their world has already begun.

As Selena disappears through the doorway, the dark merchant's eyes follow her intently, a knowing gleam in his gaze.

Morrow and Omen make their exit as well, leaving the dark merchant behind.

He stares out at the surrounding void with a hand pressed against the glass.

He leans forward slightly, murmuring under his breath, "Our world is covered in sheets, sheets of lies. Turn them over, throw them away, and burn them. Eventually you'll find the truth behind everything we know,"

"It has been my dream for so long that someone or something more powerful than the purified faction, even the major six families, would appear and change their reality. Bring them into complete submission. The right people knew about Akusan's existence but Sam's…."

"It is this, Sam Aka, that just woke up the whole world. I must meet him face -to-face, to witness the force that unravels the tangled web of deceit that binds us all. I imagine the encounter will be electric, a collision of power and revelation that leaves no stone unturned,"

"I am willing to take the first step, to venture into the heart of deception and stir the pot of truth myself. Whether it means infiltrating the strongholds of the six families or challenging the purified faction head-on, I will stop at nothing to make this meeting a reality,"

"The world deserves to see the truth unveiled, and I am prepared to light the spark that ignites this transformative confrontation."

His words are barely audible, yet they linger in the air, leaving the others to wonder if the merchant's insight will prove to be an asset or a threat in the trials to come.

In the giant forest, a unit of purified foot soldiers transport a large mechanized black casket engraved with ancient symbols by wagon.

The casket itself is an imposing structure, its surface a deep obsidian hue that seems to drink in the surrounding light.

The ancient symbols etched into its exterior glow faintly, their luminescence pulsing in rhythm with the energy coursing through the soldiers' gear.

The casket's edges are reinforced with sleek silver bands, adding to its air of mystery and impenetrability, while intricate patterns weave across its surface, hinting at the powerful secrets contained within.

The purified soldiers are clad in glistening silver armor that reflects the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy above.

Their helmets are adorned with intricate engravings that shimmer with an otherworldly glow and a pristine white circle encircled by silver lines.

Their eyes, visible through narrow slits, radiate focus.

Each soldier has a sleek, futuristic rifle in hand.

These weapons are crafted from lightweight, metallic alloy, with a matte black finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

A faint blue light pulses along the rifle's length, suggesting advanced energy technology at its core.

During their march through the forest, a four-eyed crow in a tree above them observes them and emits its "caw."

A pair of purified scientists walks alongside the soldiers, wearing streamlined white coats that repel dirt and dust.

The coat is adorned with silver circuitry patterns that pulse with a soft, rhythmic glow, echoing the energy of the soldiers' rifles.

One of the purified scientists, a woman, wears a transparent visor embedded with data displays that are sharp and calculating, enhanced by a subtle blue tint that suggests cybernetic augmentation.

Her hands, clad in delicate, high-tech gloves, deftly manipulate a small holographic display projecting from her wrist, constantly monitoring the status of the casket they transport.

The scientists converse in hushed tones, their focus on the data streaming across their displays.

"The energy signatures are stable," the woman remarks, her eyes scanning the holographic readouts.

Her colleague nods, adjusting the settings on his own device, "We must ensure the containment field remains intact; any fluctuation could be catastrophic."

Amidst the disciplined formation, a charismatic commander strides forward, his presence commanding respect and attention.

Clad in an enhanced version of the soldiers' armor, his silver breastplate bears a distinctive emblem—a radiant phoenix rising from flames—symbolizing his leadership and valor.

His helmet, slightly more ornate, is adorned with a crest of luminous feathers that ripple with energy, and his piercing gaze meets each soldier with a reassuring nod.

As he approaches the scientists, his voice is calm yet authoritative, "Status report, Doctor. We cannot afford any missteps with such volatile cargo."

The woman scientist straightens, her visor flickering as she focuses on the commander.

"All systems are functioning within optimal parameters, Commander," she replies confidently.

Her colleague adds, "We're implementing additional safeguards to ensure the containment field's integrity; rest assured, we're prepared for any anomalies."

An expression of distrust appears on the commander's face as he examines the casket.

"If you knew how much damage she caused before arriving here, you'd label what we're transporting the devil," he says.

The woman scientist exchanges a quick glance with her colleague, a flicker of concern crossing her features.

"I know Commander, that's why we've accounted for every possible scenario," she reassures, her voice steady yet tinged with a hint of urgency.

Her colleague, sensing the gravity of the commander's words, adds more emphatically, "Our calibrations are precise, and we've run extensive tests. We're confident in our ability to contain her."

"She's a devil, and the only good devil is a dead one." the commander states.

Unsure of what to say, the scientists glance at each other again.

The woman scientist hesitates before speaking, "Commander, while we understand the risks, our goal is to ultimately extract her abilities and potentially use them to better our way of living."

Her colleague nods in agreement, adding, "Eliminating her without understanding the full extent of her capabilities could be a missed opportunity for future prevention as well. If her kind was to attack us again, we must be properly defended."

"Evolution is how we survive," the female scientist's colleague adds. "As the world outside burns, the last city stands and its citizens are safely controlled by its governors. Although the barbarians outside the walls threaten the only standing representation of peace, the governors remain strong and relentless."

The commander replies, "I know...to them we owe everything. But I cannot understand why they don't kill the entire evil. There is no doubt that if you let your enemy live, it will always come back to haunt you. After that earthquake or whatever it was, the only facility capable of containing her was destroyed and it took all of the governors to put the devil down."

The commander looks back at the black casket.

The ancient symbols carved into its surface seem almost alive beneath the sunlight filtering through the trees.

Then—

CAW.

The four-eyed crow from earlier lands above them.

The commander immediately looks up.

The bird stares back.

Unblinking.

Watching.

A strange feeling settles in his stomach.

The forest had become quiet.

Too quiet.

No insects.

No distant animals.

No wind.

Only wagon wheels.

Only marching boots.

Only breathing.

The commander raises a hand.

The convoy halts.

Every soldier immediately obeys.

One scientist looks up from her display.

"Sir?"

The commander slowly scans the forest.

Something feels wrong.

Very wrong.

His hand drifts toward the pistol on his hip.

Then—

THWIP.

An arrow strikes a Purified soldier directly in the shoulder.

His shield activates a fraction of a second before impact.

Blue energy explodes outward.

"CONTACT!"

Rifles snap upward.

The forest erupts.

Blue energy rounds tear through trees.

Wood explodes.

Branches collapse.

A shadow moves between trunks.

Several soldiers fire.

Nothing.

Another shadow.

More shots.

Still nothing.

The commander immediately points.

"Defensive formation!"

The Purified react instantly.

Energy shields deploy from their forearms.

A glowing wall forms around the wagon and casket.

The scientists are pulled into the center.

Another volley of arrows emerges from the forest.

This time explosive.

The arrows detonate against the shields.

The impact rocks several soldiers backward.

The commander grits his teeth.

Disciplined.

Organized.

This wasn't banditry.

This was an ambush.

A prepared one.

A soldier suddenly screams.

The commander turns.

One of his men is gone.

Only blood remains.

The forest swallows the sound.

Then another scream.

Another soldier disappears.

No body.

No attacker.

Nothing.

The commander feels cold realization settle into his chest.

Hunters.

The convoy isn't fighting an army.

It's being stalked.

A whistle echoes through the trees.

Sharp.

Brief.

Immediately the attacks stop.

Silence.

The commander doesn't relax.

That terrifies him more.

Another whistle.

This time from behind.

Then another.

To the left.

Then another.

To the right.

Communication.

Coordination.

The commander clenches his jaw.

"Black Cloaks."

A nearby soldier pales.

The name alone is enough.

Then the forest attacks again.

Figures draped in black burst from the undergrowth.

Arrows.

Daggers.

Axes.

The Purified open fire.

Blue energy tears through the battlefield.

One Black Cloak falls.

Then another.

A third vanishes behind a tree before the shot can land.

The commander steps forward.

A Black Cloak leaps from above.

The commander shoots him directly between the eyes.

The body crashes into the dirt.

Another appears.

His baton ignites.

CRACK.

Electricity surges through the attacker.

The body collapses.

The commander scans desperately.

Where is their leader?

Every ambush has one.

Every hunt has an alpha.

A movement catches his eye.

Yellow eyes.

Watching from the trees.

Then gone.

The commander freezes.

A predator.

Not a soldier.

A predator.

Another whistle.

Suddenly three Black Cloaks break away from the main battle.

Not retreating.

Redirecting.

The scientists.

The commander realizes it too late.

"No!"

The attackers slam into the rear formation.

The Purified line fractures.

One scientist screams.

The convoy begins to collapse.

Then the yellow eyes appear again.

Closer.

The commander spins.

Nothing.

His breathing grows heavier.

The forest feels smaller.

Like it is closing around him.

Then a voice speaks beside him.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

"Found you."

The commander turns.

A man stands there.

Scarred.

Dark-haired.

Smiling.

The commander never saw him approach.

Not once.

Not a footstep.

Not a branch.

Nothing.

The man's eyes gleam with quiet amusement.

Jace Cooper.

The commander immediately swings his baton.

Too slow.

Far too slow.

A claw flashes.

For a brief moment the commander remains standing.

Confused.

Then the world tilts.

His body collapses one direction.

His head another.

The battlefield freezes.

The remaining Purified stare in horror.

Jace catches the severed head before it hits the ground.

He studies it.

Disappointed.

"Thought you'd put up more of a fight."

The last remnants of resistance crumble.

The Black Cloaks descend upon the remaining soldiers.

Minutes later—

The forest falls silent once more.

Bodies litter the ground.

Smoke rises from scorched trees.

Blood stains roots and leaves alike.

The wagon remains.

The casket remains.

Both scientists are bound and thrown against a tree.

"You shouldn't have come here." Cooper says.

Jace Cooper, a notorious figure known for his brutal tactics and cunning strategies, steps forward with a menacing grin.

His eyes, sharp and calculating, survey the captured scientists with a mix of curiosity and disdain.

"Let's see," he says, his voice smooth yet chilling, as he crouches down to meet their gaze.

Jace Cooper's face is chiseled and angular, with sharp cheekbones and piercing hazel eyes that seem to glow with an inner intensity.

A scar runs down the left side of his face, a testament to countless battles fought and survived.

His raven-black hair is tied back in a tight knot, accentuating the severity of his expression and the unwavering determination in his gaze.

The scientists exchange a terrified glance, their faces pale and their bodies trembling with fear.

They recognize the infamous Jace Cooper and understand the gravity of their situation, knowing that escape is futile.

The male scientist, trying to muster some courage, stammers, "What do you want from us?" while the female remains silent, eyes dart nervously between Cooper and the remains of the battlefield.

Without removing his gaze from the scientists, Cooper rips off the scientists' visors and hands them back to a nearby black cloak.

The male scientist who had spoken gulps audibly, his eyes widening as he struggles to maintain a semblance of composure.

His heart pounds in his chest, each beat echoing the fear coursing through her veins.

The female scientist, now exposed and vulnerable without her visor, clenches her jaw in a desperate attempt to steady herself, but her hands betray him, shaking uncontrollably as she tries to process the gravity of their predicament.

Cooper smirks as he stands up, towering over the cowering scientists.

He casually draws a dagger from his belt, twirling it between his fingers with a dexterous ease that belies its deadly purpose.

With a deliberate and calculated slowness, he leans closer, the blade's tip inching dangerously close to the trembling male scientist throat.

He whispers, "Tell me everything about your mission."

The scientist who had spoken takes a deep breath, realizing that cooperation might be their only chance for survival.

He nods slowly, deciding to offer whatever information he can in hopes of buying time.

Meanwhile, his female colleague, still overwhelmed by fear, hesitates for a moment before finally managing to stammer, "We'll tell you what you want, just please don't hurt us."

"Then I would start talking while I am still in a good mood." Cooper says.

Looking at Cooper, the scientist who had spoken looks ready to respond.

"It was a covert operation. An important research facility collapsed a couple of nights ago due to the earthquake that shook the entire world. My only knowledge of the assignment I was given is Project 74. It's a revolutionary project that has the potential to change the balance of power between nations." The scientist says.

Cooper summarizes the scientist's explanation as, "A new source of energy that can either become a limitless energy source or a devastating weapon in the wrong hands." he concludes. "You white demons are something else, don't you know?"

The male scientist asserts, "Everything we do is for the purpose of purging the world of evil. It is our mission to save people, not devastate them."

The scientist was just about to complete his speech when Cooper swiftly sliced his throat at an untraceable speed.

Seeing her colleague choke on his own blood, the female scientist panics.

Using the dying scientist's clothes to wipe off his dagger's blood, he stands up and activates his hidden ear radio.

As Cooper turns to the casket, he states, "Percy, we found the transport team. All the soldiers have been dealt with, but a scientist remains."

While he speaks into the ear piece, the dying scientist can be heard choking on his own blood.

The female scientist watches her colleague drown in his own blood, frightened that she's next.

"We're now investigating the cargo." Cooper says.

A male voice comes from the opposite side of the ear piece.

The male says, "Wait until I get there-"

Communication is suddenly interrupted, resulting in static.

"Percy?" Cooper calls out. "Message wasn't heard. Come again, Percy."

A wolf-like snarl escapes Cooper's lips.

"Communications are down."

In anticipation of his approach to the casket, the others in black cloaks stand guard.

As he inspects the black casket, the ancient symbols capture his attention.

"These symbols...I've never seen anything like them before," Cooper says.

Cooper rubs his hands over the ancient symbols.

A strange warmth spreads through his fingertips, sending a tingling sensation up his arm.

The symbols seem to pulse with a faint light, as if responding to his touch.

Cooper feels an inexplicable connection to the casket, a sense of both foreboding and intrigue enveloping him.

The others in black cloaks exchange wary glances, clearly unsettled by the phenomenon.

They tighten their grip on their weapons, ready to intervene if necessary, yet hesitating as if sensing the power emanating from the casket.

Despite their apprehension, a few steps closer, drawn by the mysterious allure that seems to beckon them.

"I'm going to open the casket."

Cooper searches around the casket in search of an opening, but finds none.

Having no other choice, he drives his sharp claws into its crevices.

A groan of strain escapes him as the casket cracks under his exertions.

A sudden burst of air from the casket triggers Cooper's wolf-like snarl.

In anticipation of danger, the other black cloaks stare at the casket with their weapons drawn.

As Cooper peers into the casket, his expression is one of surprise.

"What the-"

Inside the casket is a red lined cushion comforting a muscular, gorgeous aireon girl wrapped up like a mummy.

The aireon has dark reddish skin with a barbarous build.

She stands 6'2 and has long, pointed ears. From her forehead, she has two medium-length horns.

Her lips are slightly curled up at the edges, revealing sharp fangs.

The aireon's hair is also dark red, short with long bangs.

Her left eye is covered by a wrapping.

Aside from being eye-catching, the aireon is draped with crimson, black, and white flowers.

It is a very majestic sight to see her sleeping so comfortably despite her unusual circumstances.

Cooper's eyes widen in astonishment as he takes in the sight before him.

For a moment, he is mesmerized by her striking appearance, the fierce beauty of her form contrasting with the serene restfulness of her slumber.

Despite the tension in the air, he finds himself unable to look away, captivated by the mysterious being cradled within the casket.

Cooper hesitates, torn between leaving the aireon undisturbed and the urge to uncover the secrets surrounding her presence.

Finally, he gently reaches out, brushing a stray flower petal from her face, contemplating whether to awaken her or seek counsel from his companions.

Several Black Cloaks gathered around the casket.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Finally one of them broke the silence.

"That's it?"

Jace looked over.

"What do you mean?"

The man gestured toward the sleeping Aireon.

"Look at her."

A pause.

"The Purified moved an entire convoy for this?"

Another Black Cloak snorted.

"Maybe she's dangerous."

The first shrugged.

"She's asleep."

A third stepped closer.

Far too close.

"She's also tied up like she's some kind of monster."

Jace's gaze narrowed.

Something about that bothered him.

The girl didn't look dangerous.

She looked exhausted.

Another Black Cloak folded his arms.

"Maybe the Purified finally lost their minds."

A moment passed.

Then the sleeping Aireon inhaled.

Everyone froze.

The temperature seemed to rise.

Just slightly.

A single blue ember flickered from beneath the wrapping covering her eye.

Nobody spoke.

Then the same Black Cloak quietly muttered:

"...Never mind."

The sound of their voices awaken her from deep sleep, and she slowly took in the surroundings.

Her right eye flutters open, revealing a stormy shade of grey that glows with curiosity and caution.

As she becomes aware of her surroundings, her gaze swiftly shifts from Cooper to the cloaked figures, assessing each one with an air of regal dignity.

Despite the initial confusion, there is no fear in her demeanor; rather, a calm determination settles over her, as if she is accustomed to waking up in unexpected places and ready to face whatever challenges may come.

The black cloaks other than Cooper take a cautious step back.

Cooper raises his hands to show he means no harm.

he softly says, "Good morning. We apologize for bothering you." As he gestures towards the cloaked figures, hoping they will stop staring and intimidating her, he says, "You must be real trouble if they put you in something like this."

Cooper extends a helping hand to the aireon.

She lowers her eyes slightly, looking at his reached hand with a mix of curiosity and skepticism.

The mere sniff of the air instantly changes her from restless to bloodthirsty and furious.

Cooper instinctively recoils, sensing the sudden shift in her demeanor.

Before he could reach his weapon, the aireon lunges towards him with surprising agility, her eyes blazing with an intensity that freezes him in place.

In a desperate bid to protect Cooper, a larger black cloak jumps in front of him.

The aireon punches the black cloak defending Cooper with a force that kills them on impact.

This knocks them and Cooper into a nearby tree.

The aireon, now unrestrained and fueled by her fury, turns her attention back to the remaining cloaked figures.

With a fierce growl, she stands on the casket, determined to break free from whatever holds her captive.

Together, the remaining black cloaks rush down the aireon.

"We gotta take her down now!" a black cloak shouts.

As she extends her right arm toward the Black Cloaks, the Aireon speaks a single word.

"Kenosi."

For a moment nothing happens.

Then blue fire explodes from her body.

The forest disappears behind a wall of azure flames.

The nearest Black Cloak is consumed instantly.

Blue fire swallows him whole.

The shockwave knocks several others backward.

Cooper's vision swims.

His head pounds.

The last thing he sees before darkness claims him is the Aireon's exposed eye burning with blue fire.

Then—

Darkness.

Somewhere far away, screaming erupts.

"GET BACK!"

A tree crashes.

Wood splinters.

A man cries out.

Another scream follows.

Then another.

Then several at once.

The forest trembles.

"WHAT IS THIS THING?!"

Blue light flashes through Cooper's closed eyelids.

A violent impact shakes the ground beneath him.

Branches snap.

The smell of burning wood fills the air.

"RUN!"

A horrible crunch echoes through the forest.

The screaming abruptly stops.

For a second.

Then it starts again.

Louder.

Closer.

A Black Cloak's voice breaks with panic.

"Grab Jace and retreat-"

Another voice:

"IT'S TOO FAST!"

Blue fire illuminates the forest canopy.

Something explodes.

A rain of burning leaves drifts through the air.

"MY ARM!"

A scream.

Then silence.

Then another scream somewhere deeper in the woods.

Then another.

"BROTHER, LOOK OUT!"

Steel clashes.

A roar.

And another.

Each one farther apart.

As if something was hunting them down individually.

The forest grows quieter.

One final voice echoes through the trees.

Terrified.

Desperate.

"PLEASE—"

Silence.

Nothing follows.

Only the crackling of blue fire.

Only the smell of smoke.

Only the distant groan of falling timber.

Then even those sounds disappear.

And the Giant Forest becomes quiet once more.

The forest floor is littered with the remnants of the fierce clash, a grim tapestry of fallen leaves stained with ash and blood.

The charred remains of the black cloaks lie strewn about, their once-mysterious forms now reduced to twisted, smoldering silhouettes.

The acrid scent of smoke lingers in the air, mingling with the metallic tang of blood, as the eerie silence of the aftermath settles over the decimated landscape.

A young black cloak male with green hair walks into the bloody aftermath.

The young man crouches down to inspect blood, several black cloaks appear behind him.

He grimaces at the sight of the destruction, his eyes widening in disbelief as he surveys the charred remains of his fallen comrades.

The scent of smoke and blood fills his nostrils, causing him to recoil slightly, yet he steels himself and stands tall, determined to understand the full extent of the devastation.

His mind races with thoughts of vengeance and fear, as he looks over his shoulder at an approaching black cloak member.

"Cooper has been found, Percy." The black cloak tells him.

A bunch of black cloaks appear around Percy upon him turning around.

As he walks past them, Percy says, "Find whatever did this and bring me their head."

Like ninjas, the black cloaks leap off into the trees and begin their search.

Percy walks over to an unconscious black cloak being treated by another black cloak with concern.

"Is he alive?"

"Barely."

Percy exhales.

"Good."

A nearby black cloak calls out Percy's name from afar then a black cloak walks up to him with urgency.

The black cloak leads Percy over to Cooper, who is now awake but bleeding from his nose.

Still barely conscious, Cooper says, "Agh...She hit me good. Almost knocked the shit out of me."

He holds out a hand.

Percy grabs Cooper's hand and helps him onto his feet.

"Sorry to break the news to you but it seems like she already did."

While he holds him steady, he assesses Cooper's injuries, then makes a quick decision.

"We need to get you patched up," Percy says, gesturing for two black cloaks to assist.

Cooper winces with each step, his face contorting in pain as he struggles to maintain his composure.

Despite the throbbing in his head and the sting of his wounds, he manages a wry smile, trying to mask his discomfort with bravado.

"Seems I wasn't fast enough this time," Cooper mutters, his voice laced with a mixture of embarrassment and determination.

Percy replies, "Let's get you out of here.,

An expression of seriousness appears on Cooper's face as Percy assists him in walking.

A hint of distress is evident in Cooper's voice as he says, "Percy, wait a minute... they were transporting an aireon."

Percy's eyes narrow with urgency at the mention of the aireon, realizing the gravity of the situation.

He immediately turns to the black cloak members, his voice firm and commanding, "Prioritize finding the aireon. We cannot let it fall into the wrong hands."

With a renewed sense of purpose, the surrounding black cloaks set out, knowing that the fate of their mission now hinges on recovering this crucial asset.
