Chapter 11 - The Empire Trembles

Adrian Veyne had always believed his empire was untouchable. Steel towers, glass walls, contracts signed in ink and blood—everything built to last. But as dawn broke over the city, he felt the cracks spreading, not just in his penthouse, but in the world he ruled.

The morning boardroom was tense. Executives whispered about the rival who had collapsed days before, about the strange flickers in the lights, the whispers that seemed to follow them even outside the office. Adrian entered with his usual precision, but the silence that greeted him was different. It wasn't respect—it was fear.

He adjusted his cufflinks, his mask of control firmly in place. "Reports," he ordered.

Numbers filled the air, but Adrian barely listened. His gaze drifted to the glass walls. The city glittered beyond, yet in the reflection, shadows pressed closer, faceless figures crowding behind his executives.

One of them faltered mid-sentence, his voice trembling. "Sir… do you hear that?"

Adrian's jaw tightened. The whispers were faint but distinct, threading through the silence. Adrian Veyne. Veyne Enterprises.

He slammed his hand against the table, his voice sharp. "Focus. Numbers don't lie. Fear does."

But even as he spoke, the lights flickered. Papers scattered. The projector screen trembled, its image warping into something unreadable—faces, blurred and screaming.

Executives gasped, some rising from their seats. Adrian stood tall, his fury burning. "Sit down!"

The room froze, fear etched into every face. Adrian's gaze swept the chamber, his defiance unyielding. "This is my empire. No ghost, no curse, will take it from me."

But Elara's words echoed in his mind: They don't fight fair.

The whispers grew louder, pressing against the walls. One executive clutched his chest, collapsing to the floor. Another screamed, pointing at the reflection. "They're here! They're—"

Adrian's breath caught. In the glass, he saw himself—not the empire's ruler, not the man of control, but a figure fading into the faceless crowd.

The boardroom trembled, shadows clawing at the walls. Adrian braced himself, fury burning, but fear gnawed at the edges of his certainty.

And for the first time, Adrian realized the curse wasn't just haunting him—it was consuming his empire, piece by piece.
