Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Masks and Monsters

Chapter 15: Masks and Monsters

POV: Sam Barton

The Lockwood mansion looms like something from a Gothic nightmare, every window blazing with orange light that transforms the colonial architecture into a haunted castle. Fake cobwebs drape the columns, plastic skeletons dangle from the portico, and carved pumpkins line the walkway with flickering candles that cast dancing shadows across manicured lawn.

Sam approaches the front entrance with Caroline on his arm, both of them dressed in costumes that would be hilarious if they weren't so ironically accurate. Caroline wears a sleek black dress with a red-lined cape and plastic fangs that she keeps lisping around, playing vampire with theatrical enthusiasm. Sam sports a leather duster, wooden stake holsters, and a silver cross that's actually blessed vervain jewelry disguised as costume accessories.

"Vampire and hunter couple," Caroline had announced with manic glee while coordinating their outfits. "It's like Romeo and Juliet but with more blood and supernatural angst."

"If only she knew how accurate that comparison might become," Sam thinks grimly as they enter the mansion's transformed interior.

Through his mental link, Clone One reports from its surveillance position in the oak trees surrounding the property: "All quiet outside. Stefan and Elena just arrived—she's dressed as a witch, he's going for mysterious dark prince. Very on-brand."

"Stay alert. Big parties, alcohol, and supernatural tensions are a dangerous combination."

"Copy that. Also, Damon's here. He's wearing his regular clothes and claiming to be 'dressed as a vampire who's pretending to be human.' Meta-level costume choice."

Inside, the Lockwood mansion pulses with Halloween energy—teenagers in elaborate costumes, music that thrums through the floors, and enough fake blood and plastic weapons to stock a horror movie set. Mayor Lockwood holds court near the bar, playing gracious host while his eyes constantly track his son Tyler through the crowd.

Tyler Lockwood stands near the punch bowl, already drunk despite the early hour, his Superman costume wrinkled and his face flushed with the kind of anger that makes Sam's enhanced perception scream warnings.

"Trouble brewing. Tyler's emotional state is critical—one trigger could activate his werewolf curse."

Caroline drags Sam toward the dance floor, her vampire cape swirling dramatically behind her.

"Come on, Van Helsing," she says with exaggerated accent, plastic fangs making her lisp adorable. "Dance with your dark mistress of the night."

For twenty minutes, Sam commits completely to being Caroline's date instead of a supernatural guardian. They dance badly to music that's too loud, take ridiculous photos in the mansion's portrait gallery, and Caroline feeds him candy while critiquing everyone else's costume choices.

"This is what normal feels like," Sam thinks as Caroline laughs at his attempt to waltz in a leather duster. "This is worth protecting."

The spell breaks when raised voices carry over the music from the direction of the bar. Tyler's arguing with Matt about something, their body language aggressive and escalating. Vicki stands between them looking exhausted—she's sober in this timeline, but that doesn't make her immune to being the center of male territorial disputes.

Sam's enhanced hearing picks up fragments: "...always defending her..." "...not your business..." "...sick of everyone treating me like..."

Tyler shoves Matt hard enough to send him stumbling backward into a group of cheerleaders. Matt recovers and shoves back, harder. Suddenly they're chest-to-chest, friends turned antagonists by alcohol and frustration.

"Tyler's about to snap. His anger levels are approaching critical mass—if he loses control completely, if he hurts someone in a rage..."

Sam moves through the crowd with enhanced AGI allowing him to weave between dancing couples without disrupting the party atmosphere. He reaches the brewing fight just as Tyler draws back his fist, werewolf strength ready to do serious damage to Matt's very human face.

"Tyler," Sam says firmly, catching the larger boy's wrist before the punch can land. "Walk with me. Now."

Tyler whirls on him, eyes wild with drink and fury.

"Get off me, Barton! This doesn't concern you!"

"Your dad's watching," Sam says quietly, nodding toward Mayor Lockwood who's approaching with murder in his expression. "You really want to give him ammunition?"

Tyler's gaze snaps toward his father, and something deflates in his posture.

Sam guides him away from the crowd, toward the mansion's side library where they can talk privately. Tyler slumps into a leather chair, head in his hands.

"He never stops," Tyler whispers, voice cracking. "Perfect grades, perfect football performance, perfect behavior representing the family legacy. I can't breathe."

Sam settles across from him, recognizing this moment as critical. In canon, Tyler's anger eventually leads to accidentally killing someone, triggering his werewolf curse and condemning him to a life of supernatural chaos.

"Your dad's expectations are his problem, not yours," Sam says with complete honesty. "Don't prove him right by losing control and doing something you can't take back."

Tyler looks up with bloodshot eyes.

"Easy for you to say. Your parents are dead—no one expects anything from you."

The words hit like a physical blow, but Sam recognizes the pain behind them.

"You're right. I don't have parental pressure. But I know what it's like to feel like you're drowning in other people's expectations. The difference is, I learned that disappointing people who don't really see you isn't actually failure."

Tyler stares at him for a long moment, some of the manic energy bleeding away.

"How do you always know what to say?"

"Because I know your future, and I'm trying to save you from it."

"Because I've been angry too. And I learned that the people worth keeping around will love you even when you're not perfect."

They rejoin the party to find the atmosphere shifted toward darker undertones. Stefan and Elena dance near the windows, lost in their own private world. Bonnie chats with Jeremy near the refreshment table, her growing confidence visible in the way she carries herself.

And Damon Salvatore leans against the far wall, pale eyes tracking Sam's movement through the crowd with predatory interest.

Sam excuses himself from Caroline's latest costume critique and heads toward the bathroom, knowing Damon will follow. Sure enough, the vampire intercepts him in a dimly lit hallway lined with family portraits.

"Let's try this one more time," Damon says without preamble, moving with liquid speed to pin Sam against the wall. "What are you?"

Sam meets his gaze steadily, vervain protection holding against another compulsion attempt.

"You really need a new hobby. Stamp collecting, maybe? Less obsessive, more productive."

Damon's patience snaps like overstretched wire. His face shifts to vampire features—veins bulging around his eyes, fangs extending, inhuman strength pressing Sam against antique wallpaper hard enough to bruise.

"I could kill you right now," Damon snarls, breath cold against Sam's face. "One quick twist, snap your neck like a twig."

Sam doesn't flinch, though his heart hammers against his ribs.

"But you won't."

"What makes you so sure?"

"Because Stefan would care. Elena would care. And you're trying to be the 'good brother' for once." Sam's voice stays steady despite the supernatural predator inches from his throat. "Also, killing the psychic who's saved multiple people might make you look bad at family dinners."

Damon releases him with a sound of disgust, vampire features smoothing back to human perfection.

"You're either the bravest human I've met or the stupidest."

Sam straightens his hunter costume, adrenaline making his hands shake slightly.

"Can't it be both?"

Despite everything, Damon almost smiles.

"I'm going to figure you out, Diet Nostradamus. And when I do, we'll have a very different conversation."

"Looking forward to it," Sam lies smoothly.

After Damon stalks away, Sam remains in the hallway for several moments, forcing his pulse back to normal levels. Through their mental link, Clone One's voice carries concern: "Damon's losing patience faster than expected. His investigation will escalate."

"I know. We need to accelerate our power growth. How much longer until the tomb opening?"

"Ten days, assuming Anna's timeline holds."

"Then we have ten days to get strong enough to survive what comes after."

Sam returns to the party to find Caroline searching for him with barely contained worry. She spots him emerging from the hallway and immediately notices his disheveled appearance.

"Sam? What happened? I saw Damon heading in your direction and—"

She takes his arm and guides him toward the mansion's rear garden, away from curious eyes and listening ears. Under the moonlight, surrounded by Mayor Lockwood's carefully manicured landscaping, Caroline cups his face in her hands.

"Why is Damon Salvatore obsessed with you? What's going on that you're not telling me?"

"Here it comes. She's too perceptive to ignore the inconsistencies forever."

Sam looks into Caroline's blue eyes—beautiful, intelligent, full of love and growing fear—and realizes he can't keep lying to her completely. Not when she's about to be dragged into supernatural chaos whether he protects her or not.

"Caroline," he says carefully, "there are things about this town—about me—that are complicated and dangerous. I'm trying to protect you from all of it."

Her expression shifts from worry to something fiercer.

"I don't need protection, Sam. I need honesty. Are you in some kind of serious trouble?"

Instead of answering directly—because the complete truth would sound insane—Sam cups her face and kisses her with desperate affection. Caroline melts into it immediately, but when they separate, her eyes are still full of questions.

"I'm in love with you," Sam whispers against her forehead. "That's the only truth that matters right now."

"I love you too," she whispers back, voice thick with emotion. "But Sam, I can see that you're carrying something heavy. And eventually, that weight is going to matter to us."

"She knows. She can sense the secrets even if she doesn't know what they are."

The party winds down with Sam and Caroline slow-dancing to the final song, surrounded by friends who have no idea they're months away from supernatural revelation that will shatter their normal lives forever. Stefan and Elena sway nearby, lost in their gothic romance. Bonnie and Jeremy talk quietly by the windows, her growing magical confidence giving her new poise.

Through his mental link, Clone One reports: "All clear outside. No supernatural threats detected. Damon left twenty minutes ago—probably hunting."

"Good. One crisis avoided."

But as Sam holds Caroline close, breathing in her floral shampoo and feeling her heart beat against his chest, he knows this is the calm before the storm. The tomb opening approaches like a slow-motion avalanche, and with it, everything changes.
