Chapter 63: The Bonnie Power-Up - Part 1
POV: Bonnie Bennett
Sam's proposal catches Bonnie completely off-guard during lunch at the Grill.
"I want to help you train," he says, pushing his mostly-untouched food around his plate. "My Magic Absorption clone can drain your spells safely, giving you repeated practice without exhausting your power permanently."
Bonnie sets down her fork carefully. "Explain."
"You're powerful," Sam continues, "but you're holding back because you're afraid of hurting someone or burning out your magic. My clone can absorb whatever you throw at it, then release the energy harmlessly. You get full-intensity practice without the consequences."
It's simultaneously the most generous and most tactically brilliant offer Bonnie's ever received.
"You'd let me use your clone as target practice," she translates.
"I'd insist on it," Sam corrects. "Because when Rebekah wakes up in two days, and when Klaus follows in two weeks, we need you operating at peak capability. Original vampires don't hold back. You can't afford to either."
Caroline, sitting beside Sam, adds her support. "He's right, Bonnie. You've been progressing, but imagine if you could practice channeling without worrying about magical backlash or exhaustion. You'd be unstoppable."
Bonnie considers the offer seriously. The Bennett ancestors have been pushing her to expand her capabilities, but she's been cautious—terrified of becoming like Emily, used and discarded, or worse, losing control and hurting innocent people.
But Sam's clone provides safety net that changes the equation entirely.
"Okay," Bonnie decides. "Let's try it."
They start that afternoon in Sam's estate basement, which has apparently become unofficial supernatural training ground.
Elena and Caroline watch from a safe distance as Sam's Magic Absorption clone manifests—the shadowy figure with purple-black energy crackling around his form.
"Start small," Sam instructs. "Work your way up to combat-level spells."
Bonnie nods, channeling Bennett magic carefully. A simple telekinetic push—the kind of spell she could do in her sleep.
The energy flows from her hands toward the clone, who catches it like physical object. The magic absorbs into his form, making him glow brighter for a moment before he releases it upward where it dissipates harmlessly against the ceiling.
"Again," the clone says. "Harder this time."
Bonnie increases the power. The telekinetic blast would knock a vampire across the room—it hits the clone and vanishes into his form like water into sand.
"You're not even trying," the clone observes with Sam's tactical bluntness. "I can take Original-level magic. Push yourself."
So Bonnie does.
She channels deeper, pulling from the well of Bennett power that's been growing since she started regularly connecting with ancestral spirits. The aneurysm spell she throws could drop a vampire instantly—it hits the clone and he staggers slightly, glowing purple-black as he absorbs the mental attack.
"Better," Sam's voice comes from across the basement where his primary body coordinates. "But Bonnie, you're still holding back. You won't hurt the clone. I promise."
Bonnie knows he's right. She's been restraining herself out of habit and fear.
Time to break that habit.
They move to the witch burial ground on day two, and that's when things get serious.
Bonnie stands in the center of the cemetery, surrounded by graves of Bennett witches who died protecting this town for generations. Their spirits are close—she can feel them gathering, curious about what she's attempting.
Sam's Magic Absorption clone positions himself twenty feet away, ready to catch whatever she throws.
"Channel through me," Grams's spirit says, manifesting visibly through the magical energy Bonnie's raising. "Let me show you what Bennett witches are truly capable of."
Bonnie opens herself to ancestral channeling—something she's done before, but never with this much conscious control. Grams's power flows into her, amplified by the burial ground's natural energy and the presence of dozens of Bennett ancestors watching approvingly.
The spell she releases isn't just telekinesis or mental attack—it's raw ancestral magic given form and purpose.
Sam's clone catches it, his form blazing so bright Bonnie has to look away. He's not just absorbing the magic—he's functioning as magical battery and surge protector simultaneously, containing power that would normally feedback violently on the caster.
"Again," Grams instructs through the spirit connection. "This is how we fought Original vampires in my day. This is Bennett legacy."
Bonnie practices for three hours, throwing progressively more powerful spells while Sam's clone absorbs them all. By the end, she's maintaining aneurysm spells that would incapacitate multiple vampires simultaneously, throwing telekinetic blasts strong enough to shatter boulders, and sensing supernatural signatures several blocks away.
"You're incredible," Elena says afterward, hugging Bonnie tightly. "I've never seen you this powerful."
"Sam gave me safety to push limits," Bonnie replies, exhausted but exhilarated. "Without worrying about backlash or hurting someone, I could explore my actual capabilities."
Caroline's already documenting everything in her planner—power levels, spell types, magical capacity. "You're not just a witch anymore. You're a weapon against Originals."
"Let's not get carried away," Bonnie protests.
"She's right," Sam says, his Magic Absorption clone finally dimming as the absorbed power dissipates. "Bonnie, you just threw magic that would seriously injure an Original vampire. Klaus will want you controlled or eliminated when he wakes."
The weight of that statement settles over them.
"Let him try," Bonnie says, surprised by her own confidence. "I'm done being scared of supernatural threats. If Klaus comes for me or anyone I care about, he'll discover that Bennett witches don't break easily."
Grams's spirit manifests one final time, visible only to Bonnie. "Proud of you, child. You've become what I always knew you could be—a witch worthy of our family name."

[MAGICAL SYNERGY WITH SAM BARTON: +50% COMBINED EFFECTIVENESS]
That evening, Sam collapses from magical exhaustion.
It's not dramatic—he just sort of folds onto the estate couch, his Magic Absorption clone flickering before dismissing entirely.
Caroline's immediately there, checking his pulse and temperature with practiced efficiency.
"You absorbed too much Bennett magic," she scolds gently. "Your clone can handle it, but the connection to your primary body creates strain."
"Worth it," Sam mumbles, barely conscious. "Bonnie's now powerful enough to hurt an Original. That might save lives when Klaus wakes."
"Just don't forget to save yourself too," Caroline replies, pulling a blanket over him.
Bonnie watches from the doorway, feeling guilty about pushing Sam's limits even though he'd insisted.
"He'll be fine," Caroline assures her. "This is what he does—sacrifices himself in small ways so bigger catastrophes don't happen. I've learned to accept it while making sure he doesn't actually die from exhaustion."
"You're good for him," Bonnie observes.
"We're good for each other," Caroline corrects. "He keeps me safe from supernatural threats. I keep him safe from his own tactical martyrdom. It's a system."
Bonnie smiles despite her concern. They're building something unprecedented—not just supernatural alliances, but genuine friendships that transcend the usual human-witch-vampire dynamics.
[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +700]
[MAGIC ABSORPTION MASTERY: 35%]
[LEVEL 30: 1,800/4,000 TO LEVEL 31]
Tomorrow brings Rebekah's awakening. The day after that, who knows—more Original siblings, Klaus's return, Katherine's inevitable revenge.
But tonight brings rest, friendship, and the satisfaction of knowing they're ready for whatever comes next.
