Chapter 455 - [Land of Tea] Confrontation at Ryūchi Cave

They moved with quiet, relentless progression, threading through a landscape that refused to offer a stable reference point.

The forest thinned without warning, trees peeling away into a field of stone where rounded domes rose from a sea of white vapor. Each formation curved smoothly, imitating vertebrae breaking the surface of some buried, colossal spine. Visibility collapsed below the knee, turning the scene into a procession of floating islands.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Footfalls echoed across the stone in stretched, hollow repetitions that refused to align with the motion. A single step returned twice. Sometimes three times. Sometimes the rock simply inhaled the noise entirely. Orochimaru maintained pace. His pale form glided from dome to dome, sandals whispering against moss-slick granite.

Behind him, Sasuke followed. No strain showed, but a disjointed lag haunted his movement—a friction between his intention and the world's response. The domes offered a persistent, mocking feedback to every correction he made, weighing his instinct against the cold, skeletal density of the stone.

Orochimaru's lips curled.

Behind Sasuke, the others moved with less grace. Jirōbō's heavy steps drove dull vibrations through the stone—thud… thud…—each impact rippling outward into the mist. Sakon and Ukon stuttered at the edge of sight, their presence breaking continuity as limbs appeared and vanished in unsettling dissonance.

The serpent stopped. The wind choked into silence, and the domes coiled around that decision. Sakon's head tilted. Jirōbō shifted his weight, his shoulders locking as he braced for the unspoken.

"Your paths diverge here," Orochimaru said, his voice a soft, clinical finality.

Sakon stepped forward. "Orochimaru-sama—"

"The Katabami Gold Mine," Orochimaru continued, cutting through the interruption. "Locate Ranmaru. Confirm the status of Raiga. Extract all information regarding the Gelel Shards."

The wind filled the gap between them. Sakon's expression flickered, the burden of the names clashing against his intent as he calculated the risk.

"…Understood," he said.

"Do not fail to distinguish rumor from resource. I have no use for stories."

Sakon bowed. Beside him, Ukon's form slid partially from his brother's shoulder, a pale face emerging like a growth. A grin darted across his lips. "We'll bring you something useful," he muttered.

Orochimaru shifted his gaze, settling on the largest of the group. "Jirōbō."

The man straightened. "You will proceed to the Land of Waves. Alone."

Jirōbō's eyes snapped toward his master. "Alone?"

"Locate Hōzuki Suigetsu. He will not present himself willingly. Follow the southern coastline of Fire. Avoid the inland routes."

Jirōbō's jaw clenched, his weight dragging as he assessed the isolation. "That'll take longer," he grunted, the resistance radiating from his stance.

"Yes."

Jirōbō rolled his shoulders, cracking his neck with a wet, visceral pop. "I'll drag him back if I have to."

"You will observe. You will report," Orochimaru said.

The correction landed like a scalpel. Jirōbō's eyes darted once toward Sasuke, then he turned and plunged into the fog, his steps fading—thud… thud… thud—until the echoes lost him.

The air pressure leveled off. Then, silence followed, pooling between the domes as the mist pressed inward, closing the gaps. The lack of echo turned the landscape into a stagnant void. Sound withdrew. The air emptied of response.

Orochimaru resumed his glide, Sasuke trailing behind. The domes thinned, the vapor reeled around the threshold, and they arrived.

The entrance to Ryūchi Cave lacked any grand announcement. It appeared as a shallow recess in the stone, a void that the eye reflexively rejected. It sat half-swallowed by shadow, a gap in reality that inhaled the surrounding mist.

Sasuke stood fixed. The wind hissed between the stones, carrying a scent of stagnant mineral and deep, organic decay.

"…Is this it?" he asked.

Orochimaru let the silence pool. He watched the disappointment breathe. "You, of all people, Sasuke-kun," he said softly, his eyes locking onto the boy's, "should understand that appearances offer a poor defense against truth."

Sasuke crossed his arms. Sharingan spun, dissecting the space, but found no chakra barrier. No distortion. Only a cave that dampened the light. And yet—a prickling sensation took root beneath his skin.

"Follow your instincts."

Time stretched between them before Sasuke spoke. "I never trust my gut."

"Good," Orochimaru smiled. "Because I was not referring to your mind."

He shifted his gaze toward the side of Sasuke's neck. "Use it."

Sasuke's posture shifted, a subtle loosening of the ego. He reached for the power. A neural spike flared—his left hand darted involuntarily, a sharp muscular misfire before the black patterns of the curse mark etched outward across his skin.

He took a ragged, shallow breath as the power took hold. His fingertips blanched white, a lingering numbness spreading through his forearm as his vision over-sharpened, the world turning predatory and stark.

A pulse hit. Distant. Massive.

A shockwave of natural energy surged across the landscape. Vapor reeled under the force, and a brittle tick split along the rock's grain.

Sasuke's eyes snapped upward. He couldn't categorize the sensation, but Orochimaru registered the shift. A foreign rhythm had entered the environment, a displacement of air pressure that reached his body before his mind named it.

"…Go," Orochimaru said. "Now, boy."

Sasuke moved—a blur of motion crossing the threshold. His first step overshot the lip of the stone, his weight spilling off-line as he plunged into the dark, his over-sharpened vision misjudging the depth of the shadow. The cave's shadows closed over him instantly.

Air pulled inward, catching at Orochimaru's hairline and the hem of his sleeves as the cave sealed itself. Noise failed to return. A heavy, stagnant pressure settled into the domes. Orochimaru tested the stillness, his tongue sampling the pressure.

THUD.

The impact landed behind him. A kinetic wave traveled through the stone, vibrating up through the soles of Orochimaru's sandals and into his spine. Orochimaru's knees flexed instinctively, his weight shifting forward to absorb the tremor before his stance locked again. A ripple moved through the mist, displaced by a massive, sudden density.

Orochimaru exhaled, slow and measured. "…Right on time."

He turned.

Jiraiya stood there, but the man had yielded to something heavier. His body had thickened into a grounded mass. His nose had broadened, the skin textured with roughened protrusions. His pupils cut through the light with an imperfect clarity, one eye appearing slightly sharper than the other. Thick red markings carved across his face—veins of power pushing through the surface.

On his shoulders, the two small figures were no longer merely sitting. Shima's webbed fingers dug into the fabric of Jiraiya's cloak to anchor the shifting mass, while Fukasaku leaned his weight forward to counterbalance the heave of the sage's lungs. Jiraiya's posture shifted slightly, a heavy, grinding adjustment as his center of mass fought the intrusive energy. They remained still, though their eyes blinked with an ancient intelligence. Natural energy seeped from them like a slow-moving flood, bending the light around the trio.

Orochimaru felt the intrusion as a tactile load, a dense saturation that prickled across his skin.

Jiraiya's jaw tightened, a slight muscular tremor betraying the strain of the transformation. His breath cadence was shallow, mismatched with his heavy frame.

"Murderer."

The word carried the residue of graves and a teacher's blood. Orochimaru smiled, a polite, cold expression.

"Good to see you too, Jiraiya-san."

Vapor reeled from Jiraiya's presence.

The stone beneath them gave another faint, hairline crack as the atmosphere thickened against the stone.

Deep within the cave, the stillness started to wake.
