The first rays of sunlight hit Robert's face like an unwelcome alarm. He groaned, rolling over in bed before his internal clock—accurate to the millisecond—reminded him it was a school day. the world kept spinning.
He dragged himself to the bathroom, cranking the shower to full blast. Hot water sluiced over him, dripping down his face, plastering his gray hair against his forehead. It felt good. Normal. In this life, even the simple act of showering was something he appreciated. just water and steam.
After drying off, he pulled on a polo shirt and loose pants—comfortable, casual, nothing that said. Downstairs, the smell of coffee and Martha's pancakes filled the kitchen. Jonathan looked up from his newspaper as Robert entered.
"Son," he said, lowering his reading glasses, "how'd that date go yesterday?"
Robert poured himself orange juice. "It was good, Pa." He gave a genuine, warm smile. "Real good."
Jonathan's smirk was pure dad energy. Martha caught it, putting a hand on her husband's shoulder. "Honey, what's with that smile?"
Jonathan's smile turned awkward, caught in the act.dear. Just... our boy's growing up."
Robert and Clark shared a look across the table—the kind of mischievous, knowing grin that brothers exchange when their parents get embarrassing. They finished breakfast in comfortable chaos, then grabbed their bags.
"Bus won't wait," Jonathan called after them.
"Even if we miss it, I know a guy with super speed," Robert shot back, earning a laugh.
At the bus stop, the yellow school bus rumbled up in a cloud of diesel smoke. Robert climbed aboard, scanning the seats. Lana caught his eye immediately, her hand lifting in a small, eager wave, patting the empty space beside her.
He slid in next to her, Clark and Pete taking the seats across the aisle. Pete grinned like a kid on Christmas morning.
"So," Pete drawled, "our Robert's finally dating."
Robert gave him a smirk that said mind your business, but Lana blushing beside him was answer enough. Whispers rippled through the bus—damn, bro is so lucky, since when?, Lana Lang?
Robert let his hand slide across the seat, finding Lana's waist. She yelped softly, then suppressed it, eyes going wide. He leaned close, his breath warm against her ear.
"So the school goddess is actually shy?"
She pouted, cheeks flushing crimson. Robert answered with a smile that could've been printed in a manga—all sharp edges and knowing eyes. His hand stayed on her waist, a possessive weight that made her squirm deliciously.
Across the aisle, Clark was already deep in conversation with Chloe about some movie. The bus rolled on.
Math class.
Robert stared at the equations on the board and had to suppress a laugh. Thank God I don't have to study this shit in this life. In his previous existence as Ken, math had been the bane of his existence—formulas that twisted his brain, tests he'd failed, concepts that made him feel stupid. Now? He could calculate orbital trajectories in his head while half-asleep. But he kept his pencil moving, dutifully copying notes like a normal student.
Classes blurred by. Before he knew it, lunch time arrived. They claimed their usual spot—Lana pressed to his side, Clark, Chloe, and Pete across from them. Pete, never one to let a topic die, grinned.
"Bro, Robert, how was the date? Really?"
Robert's smirk turned devilish. He paused, letting the silence stretch. "It was... taste."
Three jaws dropped. Lana's smile turned shy, hidden behind her hair. Robert realized what he'd said a beat too late.
"Wait—taste? Bro?!" Pete sputtered.
"Good," Robert corrected quickly, face heating. "It was good."
Laughter erupted. Even Chloe giggled, while Clark just shook his head in amused disbelief.
Their moment shattered when a shadow fell over their table. School bullies—three of them, led by Whitney Fordman's crew—loomed over them, smelling like cheap cologne and bad decisions.
"Well, well," the leader sneered. "Kent's trying to act like a big man. And Lana, baby, why waste time with this loser when you could—"
"Bro," Robert cut in, voice calm, almost bored. "Do you have a problem with us?"
One bully lunged, meaty hand reaching for Robert's collar. Robert caught his wrist mid-air without looking up from his sandwich. The grip was gentle—just firm enough to stop him.
Robert stood. He didn't mean to loom, didn't mean to let his presence swell, but the bully's instincts were screaming. It felt like staring up at a titan, at something his hindbrain recognized as apex predator. The air grew heavy. The bully's face went pale.
"Let's go," the leader muttered, pulling his friend back. They retreated fast, throwing glances over their shoulders.
Pete whistled low. "Robert, that was damn cool."
Clark grinned. "Did you see their faces?"
Lana and Chloe just smiled, those mysterious girl-smiles that Robert was learning meant everything and nothing. Girls, he thought, finishing his apple. I should just use telepathy and be done with it. But that would be cheating. And where was the fun in that?
School ended in a flurry of books and last-minute homework. They said their goodbyes outside, the afternoon sun warm on their faces.
Robert pulled Lana close, hand on her lower back, and kissed her—properly, firmly, right on the lips. She melted into it, blushing furiously when he pulled away.
"Bye," she whispered, scurrying off before he could say more.
Clark clapped a hand on Robert's shoulder. "Hey. Why don't we head to the Fortress? I want to know about my home planet."
Robert considered. "Why not? I'm curious too."
They turned toward home first, planning their route. The fortress could wait until after dinner. After family.
For now, this was life. This was his life. And it was good.
