Chapter 12 - Chapter 12- Rival's Move, Choice Made

The silence on the rooftop was heavy, broken only by the distant sound of the school band practicing on the field below. Xinya looked from Yuxuan's steady, grounded presence to Zhao Lin's electric, unpredictable energy.

Zhao Lin let out a short, cynical laugh, trying to regain his footing. "That's poetic, Yuxuan. Really. But protection is just another word for a cage. Xinya isn't a delicate flower you need to shield from the wind." He turned his gaze back to her, his intensity flickering like a dying ember. "Tell him, Xinya. Tell him you hate being bored."

Xinya took a breath, her hands clenching at her sides. The nervousness that had plagued her all afternoon suddenly crystallized into a sharp, clear realization.

"You're right about one thing, Zhao Lin," she said, her voice gaining strength. "I'm not a delicate flower. And I do love excitement."

Zhao Lin's smirk began to return, but it vanished as she stepped closer to Yuxuan, her shoulder brushing his.

"But you're wrong about him," she continued, looking Zhao Lin in the eye. "Yuxuan doesn't 'barely speak.' He listens. And when he does speak, he says things that actually matter. You call it fire, Zhao Lin, but all I see is smoke. It's loud and it's flashy, but it makes it hard to breathe."

The "wolfish" glint in Zhao Lin's eyes dimmed. He dropped his hand from the railing, the casual bravado finally slipping away to reveal a flicker of genuine hurt.

"So that's it then?" Zhao Lin muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets. "You're choosing the 'steady' route?"

"I'm choosing the person who makes me feel safe enough to be myself," Xinya replied softly.

Yuxuan, who had remained a silent pillar of support, finally reached out. He didn't grab her hand forcefully; he simply offered it, palm up—a quiet invitation. Xinya didn't hesitate. She slid her fingers into his, feeling the familiar warmth that had occupied her thoughts all morning.

Zhao Lin stared at their joined hands for a long moment. He let out a long sigh, the tension leaving his shoulders. "Fine," he said, regaining a bit of his usual swagger, though it felt thinner than before. "But don't say I didn't warn you. If he ever gets too boring, the offer still stands."

He turned on his heel and headed toward the rooftop door, waving a hand over his shoulder without looking back.

As the door clicked shut, the silence changed—it was no longer suffocating, but peaceful.

"Are you okay?" Yuxuan asked, his voice dropping an octave as he turned toward her.

"I am now," Xinya admitted, leaning her head against his arm. "I was worried for a second that he was right—that maybe I was just caught up in the drama of it all. But standing here... it's not boring at all."

Yuxuan squeezed her hand, a rare, small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Good. Because I wasn't planning on letting you burn."

As they walked out of the school gates together, the sunset painting the sky in shades of violet and gold, Xinya felt a weight lift. Zhao Lin's "move" had backfired; instead of driving a wedge between them, he had only forced her to realize exactly why Yuxuan was the one she wanted by her side.

The fire was gone, but the warmth was just beginning.
