My daughter's chest rises and falls, soft breaths leaving her as she sleeps.
The moonlight spills through the tall windows of her chamber, pale and cold against the stone walls. The fire in the hearth burns low. The room smells faintly of lavender oil the maids rubbed onto her wrists to calm her.
I sit beside her bed with her small hand wrapped in mine.
It has been hours since she fainted in the courtyard.
And I would be a liar if I said I do not know why.
Her body simply couldn't carry the weight of what we placed upon it.
None of them can.
After Rhiannon's wedding, Darren began waking in the middle of the night screaming for her.
He was there that day. He saw everything happen.
The blood.
The chaos.
The monster taking her.
We told him it was a nightmare. That his sister is safe. That she is living happily somewhere far away with Cyrus. That he simply woke up confused.
