Chapter 5 - Going somewhere

ISOBEL

"How dare he threaten me in that manner?" I muttered to myself as I hurriedly stuffed my clothes into my duffel bag. "Who gave him such audacity?"

All of my mutterings didn't stop me from quickly gathering my little belongings because I knew I couldn't bear to stay in this pack any longer.

Not only was I fed up with Ophelia and her drama, I just couldn't tolerate her godson, Mason. I was certain he knew who I was from the start, yet he did nothing to stop me. Why?

I just couldn't wrap my head around it, or was it some kind of game with his mother? To prove that I was indeed the hoe she always accused me of. Whatever it was, I refused to be part of it, and that was why I needed to leave immediately.

"Isobel," My name came as a whisper and when I turned around, I found Quinn, latched to the door. "What are you doing?" She asked, looking genuinely confused.

"Trying to run away, obviously," I stated, as I continued packing my stuff. "I need to leave here immediately."

"Why?" Quinn asked, making me halt in my tracks.

I turned to face her, "Why?" I repeated her question just to be sure I heard correctly. "Not long ago, you were in support of me leaving the pack and now you're asking why."

She sighed deeply and walked towards me, placing an arm on my shoulder, "I didn't mean it like that, Isobel," she explained calmly, "what I'm saying is that I expected you to lay low, at least for the time being because your recent attempt at escaping may have brought you into the spotlight and now you have lots of eyes on you,"

Quinn's words made a lot of sense, a trait I loved about her. She always managed to talk me out of my impulsiveness but not this time, my mind was already made. And besides, even if I agree to ditch my plans on running away, how would I face Mason knowing that he's here to stay?

Sooner or later, the news will spread like wildfire and I'm damn sure that not a single soul would be on my side.

"I have to go, Quinn." I whispered, "I can't stay here. I've made a mistake, one which I can't afford to repeat so I must leave."

My words must've piqued her curiosity as she leaned in, "What are you talking about, Isobel?"

"It's nothing," I forced a smile to my face, unable to open up to her.

"You're lying to me." She accused, whilst scrutinizing me.

"I'm not," I countered, my eyes looking everywhere but at her.

Quinn has been my best friend was as long as I can remember and we've never had to lie to each other, not until now.

"When did you start hiding things from me, Isobel?" She asked in a shaky voice, her eyes already watering.

Her tears almost broke my resolve. Almost! But I knew I had to be rational and put my feelings in check. I trusted Quinn enough to tell her the truth but I just didn't want to face the reality of what I had done with Mason. At least not yet.

"I'm not hiding anything from you…" I drawled, "I'm simply keeping the full story for later,"

"Isobel," She called out, still not satisfied with my response but I didn't have the time for it.

"I have to leave now," I said, zipping my duffel, "I can't afford any more time wastage,"

"But what if you get caught?" She asked, "Escaping twice in a row is similar to treason, you know that right?"

"I do," I held her my her shoulders, staring deep into her eyes, "but I won't get caught because I have a wonderful friend who'd look out for me."

Quinn sighed and with a smile, she hugged me, "You know I'll always do anything for you,"

"I can't thank you enough," I said sincerely, "I promise to keep in touch,"

"Alright," She untangled herself from me, making for the door "I'll go make sure the sentries are distracted and then I'll wait for you at the gazebo."

"Okay," I nodded and with that, Quinn vanished.

I took some time to myself, looking around my childhood room for the last time, knowing that no matter how much I'd miss this place, I just couldn't afford to stay.

After what seemed like enough time, I headed out. Truly, just as she promised, there was not a single guard in sight and while I should've been elated that everything was going according to plan, I just couldn't shake off the feeling of fear and doubt from my mind.

"Everything is going to be fine, Isobel," I gave myself a little pep talk, "You're finally leaving this hellhole,"

I walked quietly until I reached the gazebo where Quinn was waiting for me, "What took you so long!" She asked impatiently.

"I wanted to give you time. I didn't want to mess things up." I confessed.

"Everything is under control, Ophelia and her godson are asleep, but we don't have much time. You have to get going before the border guards realize that I created a false alarm."

"Yeah, I should." I swallowed, suddenly feeling sad, "Thank you, Quinn."

"That's what friends are for," She smiled, "Now get going!"

"Alright!" I chuckled at her impatience and then dashed off. I ran as fast as my legs could go, which was quite slow compared to an average wolf. Sucks to be a 'wolfless' omega.

On getting to the border gates, I realized how tall the fences were and how I was only lucky to have escaped the last time because of the party. How was I supposed to jump over?

I moved closer, only to discover that the gates were ajar. Strange!

That should have rang a bell in my head, it was a clear indication that something was off but my zeal to escape was stronger than my rationality, and the moment I stepped foot out of the gate, his voice resounded, "Going somewhere?"
