Chapter 27: Aftermath and Revelations

POV: Nova Asahi

Consciousness returned like surf washing over broken glass—gentle but impossible to ignore, carrying with it the accumulated weight of every decision that had led to this moment. Nova's eyes opened to the sterile white ceiling of UA's medical wing, fluorescent lights painting everything in shades of clinical efficiency that made his enhanced vision ache.

"Alive. That's... something. Though I feel like I've been run through a industrial blender and reassembled by someone with only theoretical knowledge of human anatomy."

"About time you woke up," Recovery Girl's voice carried the particular mixture of concern and exasperation that came from decades of treating teenagers who thought invincibility was a character trait rather than a death wish. "You've been unconscious for three hours. MP exhaustion, severe bruising, cracked ribs, and enough internal bleeding to concern even someone with my experience."

Nova tried to sit up and immediately regretted the decision as his body reminded him that fighting bioweapons designed to kill legends had consequences that healing quirks couldn't fully erase. His ribs felt like they were held together with wishes and medical tape, while fatigue pressed against his consciousness like a lead blanket.

"MP still at zero. System functions minimal. I'm running on biological processes alone for the first time since transmigrating. It feels like trying to see with half my eyes missing."

"Easy there, dearie," Recovery Girl said, her cane tapping against the floor as she approached his bed. "My quirk accelerated your natural healing, but your body needs time to process the energy expenditure. You pushed yourself well beyond safe limits."

"Safe limits. Right. Because letting Aizawa die and watching the Nomu slaughter my classmates would have been the 'safe' choice."

"How is everyone else?" Nova asked, his voice coming out rougher than expected. "Aizawa-sensei, the other students—"

"Alive," a familiar gravelly voice interrupted from the bed beside his. "Thanks to you."

Nova turned to see Aizawa propped up against pillows, his left arm encased in a complex cast that spoke of multiple fractures carefully reset by medical professionals. Bandages covered the left side of his face, but his visible eye held an expression Nova had never seen from their usually stoic teacher: gratitude mixed with something approaching paternal pride.

"He's conscious. Injured but functional. The timeline change worked—Aizawa survives instead of nearly dying, keeps his quirk instead of losing it, continues teaching instead of being forced into medical retirement."

"You disobeyed direct orders," Aizawa continued, his voice carrying the particular exhaustion that came from surviving encounters that should have been fatal. "Rushed into combat against an opponent that outclassed you in every measurable category. Risked your life for someone you barely knew."

Nova felt his throat tightening with emotion he couldn't fully process. "I couldn't just watch you—"

"You saved my life," Aizawa interrupted, his visible eye focusing on Nova with laser intensity. "The doctors said my arm would have been crushed beyond repair if you hadn't intervened when you did. So... thank you, Nova. What you did was reckless, stupid, and absolutely heroic."

"Gratitude from Aizawa. The man who expels students for showing up five minutes late is thanking me for breaking every tactical principle he's ever taught. This feels more surreal than fighting the Nomu."

"Just doing what any hero would do," Nova said quietly, meaning every word despite the weight of deception that made simple honesty feel like luxury he couldn't afford.

"No," Aizawa replied with conviction that left no room for argument. "You did what the best heroes would do. There's a difference."

The interview began thirty minutes later when Principal Nezu arrived with Detective Tsukauchi in tow, both of them carrying notebooks and the particular expressions of professionals conducting critical investigations. Nova's enhanced senses immediately catalogued threat levels: Nezu as always registered as intellectually dangerous but not immediately hostile, while Tsukauchi carried the calm competence of someone whose quirk made lies impossible to sustain.

"Lie detection. This is where everything either holds together or falls apart completely. I need to tell enough truth to satisfy his quirk while omitting the parts that would make me sound completely insane."

"Young Nova," Nezu began, settling into a chair beside the medical bed with movements that spoke of barely contained energy. "We need to discuss your remarkable prescience regarding yesterday's incident. Detective Tsukauchi specializes in cases involving quirk-related deception, so please answer his questions as completely as possible."

Tsukauchi activated his quirk with the efficiency of someone who'd spent years learning to read the subtle signs of deception in vocal patterns and body language. "You provided multiple warnings about security threats before the USJ incident. How did you know to expect villain activity?"

"Careful. Tell the truth from a specific perspective. My Danger Sense quirk did detect threats, even if the real source of my knowledge came from meta-awareness of canonical events."

"My Danger Sense quirk has been developing rapidly over the past few months," Nova said, choosing each word like a bomb disposal expert selecting which wire to cut. "It's specifically designed to detect hostile intent and potential threats to myself and others. I'd been getting increasingly strong danger signals all week, focused on UA and particularly on off-campus training events."

Tsukauchi's expression remained neutral, but Nova caught the slight nod that indicated his quirk was registering truth in the statement. "And you interpreted these sensations as warnings about specific villain attacks?"

"I interpreted them as reasons to be extremely cautious about security vulnerabilities," Nova replied. "The sensations were too strong and too specific to ignore, so I reported them to authority figures who could take appropriate precautions."

"Technically true from a certain perspective. I did have danger sense warnings, even if the real source was meta-knowledge about canonical events."

"Your tactical coordination during the crisis was exceptional," Nezu observed, his small hands folded with mathematical precision. "You demonstrated understanding of villain capabilities and hero limitations that suggests either remarkable analytical ability or prior familiarity with similar situations."

Nova felt sweat gathering despite the medical wing's comfortable temperature. "Combat analysis is part of my quirk's tactical applications. When I see threats, I automatically start calculating countermeasures and coordination strategies. Yesterday was... intense enough to push those capabilities to their limits."

Tsukauchi's quirk continued registering truth in Nova's carefully parsed statements, and after several more minutes of questioning, the detective seemed satisfied with the consistency of his responses. "Your warnings likely prevented multiple casualties," he concluded. "Whatever the source of your insights, they served the public good."

"Indeed," Nezu agreed, though his intelligent eyes suggested he understood that Nova was omitting significant details. "Your secrets—whatever they might be—served heroism yesterday. That's sufficient for official purposes, though I hope you'll share more complete information when you're ready."

"He knows I'm hiding something massive. But he's willing to overlook it as long as my actions remain heroic. The same calculated gamble he offered during our first meeting, but with added weight from yesterday's proof of concept."

"Thank you for understanding," Nova said, meaning it more than any words he'd spoken in weeks. "I know my situation is... complicated."

"The best heroes usually are," Nezu replied with a smile that somehow managed to be both reassuring and terrifying.

After the officials left, Nova found himself alone with his thoughts until Momo entered carrying an enormous bouquet of flowers that probably violated several hospital regulations. Her uniform was perfectly pressed despite yesterday's chaos, but dark circles under her eyes spoke of sleepless nights spent worrying about people she cared about.

"She came. Despite everything—the secrets, the obvious deception, the way I keep hiding important information—she's here because she was worried about me."

"These are from Class 1-A," Momo said, setting the flowers on his bedside table with movements that seemed almost nervous. "Everyone wanted to visit, but Recovery Girl limited visitors to immediate family and... well, I may have implied that we were closer than just classmates."

Nova felt heat rising in his cheeks despite his enhanced constitution's attempt to maintain optimal body temperature. "Closer than classmates?"

"I was worried," Momo said simply, and suddenly she was beside his bed, carefully avoiding his injured ribs as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. "When that creature hit you, when you went flying into the wall, I thought... I thought I might lose you before I had the chance to tell you how I felt."

"She's trembling. This brilliant, composed, analytically perfect girl is shaking because she was afraid I might die. When was the last time anyone cared about me like this?"

Nova returned the embrace despite the protests from his healing ribs, feeling her warmth and the faint scent of her shampoo that somehow made the sterile medical environment feel less cold. "I couldn't let anyone die if I had the power to prevent it. That's what heroes do, right?"

Momo pulled back to look at him with dark eyes that held a mixture of affection and careful assessment. "You're hiding something big, Nova. Everyone knows it now. The way you predicted the attack, coordinated our response, fought like you knew exactly what that creature was capable of... there's more to your story than you're telling anyone."

"This is it. The moment where she either accepts incomplete truth or demands explanations I can't give without sounding completely insane."

"But," Momo continued before he could formulate a response, "you used those secrets to save people. You risked your life for our teacher, coordinated tactics that defeated something designed to be unbeatable, and made sure everyone went home alive. I trust you, Nova. Whatever you're hiding, I believe your heart is in the right place."

The weight of her trust settled in Nova's chest like a physical presence—warm, terrifying, and more precious than any system reward he'd ever received. "I don't deserve that kind of faith."

"Let me be the judge of what you deserve," Momo said with a smile that made his enhanced vision stutter with emotional feedback he couldn't quite process. "Just... promise me you'll be careful. Whatever dangers you can sense coming, whatever secrets you're carrying, you don't have to face them alone anymore."

"Alone. I've been alone for so long that I'd forgotten what it felt like to have someone willing to stand beside you without demanding complete transparency as the price of admission."

"Together," Nova said, the word carrying weight beyond its simple syllables. "Whatever comes next, we'll face it together."

That evening, alone in his hospital bed while Momo returned to the dorms and normal life resumed around him, Nova received another message that made his blood run cold:

"You changed the script beautifully. But remember—every change has consequences. The game continues, and the stakes are rising. Well played. - A.F.O."

Nova stared at the text until his enhanced vision began to blur, each character carrying implications that stretched far beyond simple acknowledgment. All For One wasn't just aware of timeline alterations—he was actively monitoring Nova's impact on canonical events and treating the entire situation like a strategic game with rules only he understood.

"The USJ attack was just the opening move. Whatever comes next will be harder, more dangerous, designed to account for the variables I represent. I saved everyone this time, but All For One is learning from my tactics."

Nova deleted the message and closed his eyes, feeling the weight of borrowed power and impossible responsibility pressing against his chest like a physical force. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new tests of his ability to balance heroism with deception.

But tonight, for the first time since transmigrating, he wasn't facing those challenges alone.
