The seedlings were a translucent bluish red, their delicate leaves catching the light whenever Eli moved.
He was certain he had seen black spots on them just moments ago. Hadn't he? He stood there for a while, staring at the plant with a puzzled expression, before finally leaving the greenhouse.
He had barely walked down the street when he suddenly remembered that he had left his coat behind. With a quiet curse, he turned around and hurried back to retrieve it.
When he entered the greenhouse again, his gaze instinctively swept over the incubator. At the very edge, one of the seedlings had drooped to the side, its slender stem too weak to support itself. The little plant looked so wilted that Eli couldn't help feeling sorry for it. He carefully lifted it and propped it against the edge of its container, making sure it would remain upright.
They looked so pitiful.
