Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26 — SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The sun had barely touched the horizon when Sera awoke to a strange, restless energy in the estate. Her wolf stirred violently within her, claws flexing against her palms, teeth bared in a low, rumbling growl. Something was off—something she could sense deep in the forest.

Lucien was already awake, standing at the balcony, his golden aura faintly glowing as he scanned the distance. He hadn't noticed her watching yet, his jaw tight, posture tense.

"Lucien…" Sera approached quietly, feeling her wolf tense at the subtle vibrations in the air. "Something's wrong."

He didn't turn. "I can feel it too," he said finally, voice low, measured. "Kieran is near again, but… there's more. His energy is… different. He's not alone."

Sera swallowed. Her pulse quickened. "Not alone?"

"No," Lucien said, turning to meet her gaze. "There's someone with him—someone powerful. And I fear it's someone he trusts… someone who knows the estate and our defenses intimately."

Sera's wolf growled, a warning. "He's… inside the pack?" she whispered, heart pounding.

Lucien's gaze darkened. "I don't know yet. But we'll find out soon enough."

The Warning from the Past

Hours later, Lucien convened the pack in the estate's main hall. Ava, Rowan, and other trusted members stood around a long, polished table, their faces tense. The morning sunlight streamed through shattered windows, highlighting the worry etched on every face.

Lucien's golden eyes swept the room. "Kieran is planning something. I can feel it in his energy—a strike meant to destabilize us, and he's bringing someone else into the mix."

A murmur ran through the pack. Sera felt a chill creep along her spine. She glanced at Ava. "Who… who could he bring?"

Ava shook her head. "I don't know. But I've heard rumors. Kieran has connections—alliances with other exiled hybrids. Someone he trusts completely. Someone who hates you—or someone close to you."

Sera's heart skipped. "Someone close to me?"

Lucien's jaw tightened. "We'll find out. But we need to prepare. Sera, your training is critical. If he targets you… your hybrid powers must be ready."

Sera nodded, focusing her mind. The golden energy of her wolf surged faintly around her, and she felt a strange familiarity in the vibrations—like a memory she couldn't quite place.

---

The First Attack

By nightfall, Kieran's forces moved like shadows through the forest. Sera and Lucien led the estate's defenses. Wolves, both human and hybrid, lined the grounds, ready for battle. Ava crouched beside Sera, growling low.

"Something's different this time," Ava whispered. "The energy… it's not just Kieran's. He's using someone else's power—someone he trusts completely. Be careful."

The first wave of attackers surged forward—shadowy figures, moving faster than Sera had ever seen. She released a pulse of golden energy, striking one and sending it crashing backward. Her wolf roared, instincts guiding her, but something was off.

One of the attackers froze mid-step. Sera's eyes widened as recognition hit her. The figure removed his hood—and it was someone she knew.

"Rowan?" she whispered, disbelief and horror flooding her.

Rowan's eyes glimmered with a cold light, crimson-red in the moonlight. "Hello, Sera," he said smoothly, voice eerily calm. "I've been waiting for this moment."

Sera's wolf surged inside her, claws extending, growling ferociously. "How… how could you betray us?"

Rowan smiled, a cruel, calculated expression. "It's simple. Kieran offered me what you can't. Power. Freedom. And… revenge for the past."

Lucien's golden eyes blazed. "Rowan… I trusted you. You're a member of my pack. How could you side with Kieran?"

Rowan stepped closer, energy dark and dangerous radiating from him. "You don't understand, Alpha. Some debts can't be repaid. Some bonds… are broken long before they're formed."

Sera's heart pounded. "Debts? Bonds? What are you talking about?"

Rowan's gaze flickered toward her, a shadow of something familiar passing over his face. "You've forgotten, haven't you? Your past… your origins. Kieran and I were part of that story. And now… you'll pay for forgetting."

---

The Revelation

Sera staggered back, golden aura flaring uncontrollably. "My… past?"

Rowan laughed softly, stepping into the moonlight. "Yes. Kieran knows the truth about you, Sera. About your hybrid lineage. About the powers you've only begun to master. He's obsessed with controlling you because… you were his creation, in a sense. Part of his plan from the beginning."

Sera's wolf roared in her mind, confused and enraged. Lucien's hand found hers, grounding her. "Sera… breathe. Focus. Don't let him manipulate you with lies."

Sera's head spun. "Creation? Obsession? What are you saying?"

Rowan's eyes gleamed red. "Your hybrid nature… your abilities… Kieran had a hand in them before you even knew it. Your mother's bloodline… your powers were meant for him to exploit. And now… it's time you choose where your loyalty lies."

Sera felt the blood drain from her face. The past she had thought she controlled, the family she had never known, the powers she had just begun to master—everything suddenly had a new, terrifying context.

Lucien's hands tightened around hers. "Sera, none of that matters now. What matters is that you're here, and you're with me. We control the bond. We control the power. We are stronger together."

Sera nodded, but the revelation cut deep. Her wolf surged angrily, instincts screaming betrayal and danger. "I… I need to fight," she whispered.

---

Battle Within and Without

The clash erupted. Rowan moved with deadly precision, combining his own hybrid energy with Kieran's influence. The ground shook beneath their feet, and energy sparks erupted with every strike.

Sera's golden aura flared, and she surged forward, blocking Rowan's attacks, her wolf guiding her movements. But the betrayal stung worse than any strike. Every blow she landed carried confusion, rage, and heartbreak.

Lucien was beside her, moving in perfect synchronization, but even he seemed caught off guard by Rowan's mastery of hybrid powers. Ava lunged at Rowan's flank, snarling, but he anticipated the attack, sending her sprawling with a burst of dark energy.

Sera's wolf growled inside her mind, urging her to act—but Sera hesitated, struggling to reconcile her feelings. The betrayal of someone she trusted, combined with Kieran's manipulations, threatened to destabilize her control.

Then Lucien's voice cut through, sharp and commanding: "Focus, Sera! The bond! Your wolf! Use it!"

She exhaled, golden energy flaring as she channeled all her fear, anger, and resolve into one controlled surge. Her wolf synced perfectly, guiding her attacks with lethal precision. Together, she and Lucien pushed Rowan back, forcing him to retreat, his energy flickering under the combined assault.

The Aftermath

Rowan stumbled backward, crimson eyes blazing with hatred and frustration. "This isn't over, Sera. Kieran will come for you—both of you. And when he does… you'll see the truth fully."

With a final, mocking glance, Rowan vanished into the shadows, leaving a trail of dark energy behind.

Sera sank to her knees, golden aura flickering. Her wolf purred faintly, but the lingering sense of betrayal gnawed at her. "I… I trusted him," she whispered.

Lucien knelt beside her, placing a protective hand on her cheek. "He's a traitor, Sera. That doesn't change who you are—or what we are together. The bond is ours. And it's stronger than any lies or betrayal."

Ava circled them, ears twitching, tail low. "We need to be ready. Kieran knows more than we thought. And he won't stop until he gets what he wants."

Sera's golden eyes met Lucien's, determination burning within her. "Then we fight. Together. No matter what secrets or betrayals come."

Lucien's golden gaze softened, but there was a fire there too. "Together. Always."

Outside, the night was quiet, but the forest pulsed with unseen eyes. Kieran was out there. Rowan had betrayed them. And Sera now understood that the battle wasn't just about power—it was about trust, loyalty, and facing a past she never knew existed.

Her hybrid powers hummed beneath her skin, her wolf ready, her heart anchored in the bond with Lucien.

And for the first time, she knew: the storm was just beginning.
