Chapter 26 - Weapon Forging

In Zhou Yi's imagination, the ideal weapon needed to be sufficiently sharp, heavy enough, and convenient to carry.

For now, the adamantium spearhead was sharp enough, but even if he made the spear shaft entirely out of adamantium, the overall weight still wouldn't meet Zhou Yi's requirements.

Given his strength, the perfect weapon—especially one like a long spear—should weigh around 200,000 to 300,000 pounds. Converted into ancient Chinese units, that would be well over a hundred thousand jin.

With a weapon that heavy, nothing more needed to be said—if Zhou Yi simply accelerated a bit and smashed it into anything, it would basically hit with the force of a bomber.Unfortunately, with the materials known today, achieving that kind of weight was pure fantasy.

Think of that all-powerful monkey in mythology—the terrifying weapon in his hand weighed only 13,500 jin. And that divine tool was forged from the sacred iron used by Yu the Great to measure the floods and pacify the East Sea. Even in mythology, few weapons could compare.

One could imagine how impossible it would be to reach the weight Zhou Yi envisioned.

By contrast, portability was the least of his concerns.

Alpha Nano Metal Type VI—the version of the material used in the Dawn Armor before the current one—could basically meet Zhou Yi's needs.

Compared to Type VII, the only differences were weight and the inability to eliminate magnetic interference. In all other respects—energy conductivity, self-compression capability, high-temperature and pressure resistance, metal memory repair, and secondary deformation—it was almost the same.To put it plainly, Type VI's only flaw was its ridiculous weight: 144 grams per cubic centimeter, over six times heavier than osmium. A spear shaft twelve Chinese feet long would weigh nearly a ton.

Even so, such a weight was unacceptable for most normal people. No manufacturer would tolerate their aircraft or warships being unable to take off or move because the material was too heavy.

This was a huge setback for Zhou Yi, who originally intended this material for aerospace metals. In the end, he simply turned it into a personal toy instead. A spear over a ton wasn't quite perfectly handy for him, but still barely usable.

Although weight would need to be reduced somewhat due to nano-compression, it wouldn't be too significant. And Alpha Nano Metal could be fully produced by Medusa through automated mechanical fabrication. All Zhou Yi needed to do was state his requirements and wait for Medusa to finish.

A proper long spear, however, did not consist only of a spearhead and spear shaft. It also required a spear butt, similar to the pointed counterweight at the bottom of traditional Chinese spears. Strictly speaking, what Zhou Yi crafted was no longer a simple spear—it resembled more of a shuò, the heavy spear-like weapon of ancient cavalry.

The long spear first appeared around the Song dynasty and flourished in the Ming dynasty—an invention shaped by its era.

After the Song and Ming dynasties, the Han people repeatedly suffered defeats in the northern regions near the Hetao plains. Compared with the Han and Tang dynasties, they were inferior in horses, supplies, and physical strength. In the Han and Tang eras, the weapons of choice were the long spears—twelve-foot shuò—with sword-like spearheads capable of piercing heavy armor, thick and heavy shafts, and lengths reaching over ten feet. Only with such weapons could cavalry achieve overwhelming dominance.

Because with sufficient weight, even a glancing blow could injure, and a solid hit could kill. With sufficient length, one could strike from horseback at a great distance. These spears were priceless military treasures—not only complex to craft, but also extremely rare.

Only exceptional warriors like Luo Shixin or Yuwen Chengdu in the romances—men who honed their bodies from childhood—could wield such weapons. Ordinary people couldn't even buy one, let alone use it.

By the Song and Ming eras, the Han people had grown weaker, culture valued literature over martial arts, and warhorses became scarce. The long spear arose as a result. Compared to the shuò, the spear was shorter and lighter, with a high ridge and thin blade, a shaft thicker at the base and thinner toward the tip, flexible and durable. It was also more suitable for infantry combat—and most importantly, far cheaper to produce.

Thus, the spear gradually replaced the heavy shuò.

For Zhou Yi, whether a spear or a shuò didn't matter much—but in terms of practicality, he preferred the shuò. Among long-handled weapons, the shuò was the true noble armament; demanding, but perfectly suited to him. Craftsmanship wasn't an issue—he had the most advanced machinery and metals on earth. Strength was even less of a problem. With his power and skill, wielding a shuò was trivial.

As for length, cavalry shuò often reached eighteen feet. But Zhou Yi didn't ride horses—he could fly—so what use did he have for one? In the end, what he made was still a spear, at most a spear styled after the shuò, about twelve Chinese feet long. Since the technique to craft a true shuò was nearly lost, he could only replicate one based on historical texts. Whether it truly counted, he wasn't sure.

But the distinction hardly mattered—just different names.

In his hands, such a weapon was already a peerless killing tool. The fierce and domineering spearhead resembled an ancient, razor-sharp short sword. The twelve-foot shaft (using the Han dynasty foot, so just over two meters long), thick as an egg, was covered in dense scale-like engravings that shimmered under the lights.

The spear butt was a one-foot-long triangular spike with internal blood grooves—another deadly instrument. Seen from afar, the entire spear exuded dominance and murderous intent, looking less like a mortal weapon and more like something from myth. Of course, it still fell short of a true divine weapon.

Once everything was complete, Zhou Yi lifted it. A bit lighter than he'd hoped, but still durable enough.

He twisted his waist—Whoosh! The massive spearhead lunged forward like a dragon seeking the cloud's edge. The shaft followed like a serpent, the spearhead flashing like thunder and lightning. Shadows tangled, silver light swirled, dazzling to the point of dizziness. Facing such attacks, one would have no idea where to even begin defending.

It came fast, and it ended fast.In an instant the clouds dispersed, wind and moon returned, and Zhou Yi was standing calmly, holding the spear steadily in his hand, leaving no trace of the inhuman spearwork from moments earlier.

This was strength and technique combined—a profound mastery.

Looking at the spear, Zhou Yi felt reluctant to put it down. With this in hand, he would have far more confidence dealing with troublesome foes. His combat power had increased not by a mere fraction, but significantly.

A slight twist to a hidden switch, and the shaft started contracting like flowing mercury—rapidly shrinking. In a moment, only a palm-length remained, transforming the spear into a double-edged short blade—another practical form.

With that, Zhou Yi began contemplating whether he should develop a ranged attack method as well. But how? That required further thought.

"Medusa, based on this weapon, I need a ranged attack system. Do you have any suggestions?"

When unsure about internal matters, one asks Baidu. When Zhou Yi was unsure, naturally he asked the far more capable AI—Medusa.

And as expected, Medusa didn't disappoint. This time she even surprised him. He originally thought Medusa would recommend something like a longbow, then discuss design arcs and precision. But unexpectedly, she skipped past the limits of cold weapons entirely and offered him a huge surprise.

"Sir, are you familiar with the latest developments in electromagnetic railguns?"

"I only know that General Atomics just recently completed a test firing," Zhou Yi scratched his face. As someone who relied heavily on importing ideas, he didn't pay much attention to such things unless necessary.

"Currently, the U.S. military's internal railgun models are mostly complete, equipped on main warships and powered by nuclear reactors. Test firings of 20-pound projectiles reach Mach 5 and a range of about 300 kilometers.Your Mercury Research Institute has made major breakthroughs in electromagnetic launch systems—they can accelerate large, heavy objects electromagnetically, but are limited by pulse energy output. In theory, with sufficient energy, Mercury's electromagnetic launcher could support your weapon."

"How much energy is required?" Zhou Yi asked cautiously. Medusa had tricked him more than once. Without human reasoning patterns, Medusa often proposed suggestions that looked feasible but were deeply flawed.

Of course, once such issues were solved, the solution became perfect.

"You would need the full output of the two nuclear reactors aboard a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier."

"I should've known."

The full energy load of a ten-thousand-ton aircraft carrier was sheer madness to normal people. Using that much energy just to fire one shot—how insane was that? But for Zhou Yi, energy was never a problem. Like Tony's Arc Reactor, Zhou Yi himself was essentially a supersized fusion reactor. Providing energy was nothing to him.

It was like the sun shining for billions of years—It had the capital. It didn't care about the cost.

"Contact Mercury Research. Send them my requirements. I want to see a prototype as soon as possible. Tell them—the faster they solve this, the less they need to worry about next quarter's research budget. Otherwise, they can start looking for new employers."

For the research institutions under him, Zhou Yi always gave maximum financial support and maximum psychological pressure. When acquiring them, he had already removed the schemers and minimized internal sabotage. But like it or not, researchers always had their quirks; many would obsess over a single theory for years.

So Zhou Yi never showed them too pleasant a face—that would only create problems. At the end of the day, he was a businessman, not some benevolent patron of scientific progress. He needed things that created value for him, not piles of useless data.

Medusa faithfully conveyed Zhou Yi's message.

And once everything was done, Zhou Yi picked up his new weapon, opened the laboratory door, and walked out.

He still had a guest to attend to.
