Chapter 7 - The Midnight Hunt for Kuma-chan

The entire house had finally surrendered to sleep.

Izumi slept like a spiritual entity who had achieved ultimate enlightenment.Still. Serene. Untouchable.

Takeru slept like a soldier on duty.Back straight. Breathing light. Ready to wake at the slightest sound.

Mei slept like a freshly baked sweet bun.Round. Warm. Hugging her own arm.

And Harumi…

Harumi slept like she had lost a battle against the futon itself.

Blanket on the floor.Pillow in an illegal position. One sock missing in action.Hair looking like it had argued with an electrical outlet and lost.

The house was at peace.

Silent.

Calm.

Until—

tap… tap… tap…

A tiny hand poked Harumi's shoulder.

"Haru…?"

She opened one eye.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

Her system was clearly updating.

"Hm…?"

Mei was standing there. Small. Very small. Eyes glossy with barely contained tears.

"M-My Kuma-chan…"

Harumi blinked three times.

"My… what-chan?"

"My monkey…" Mei sniffled. "I left him outside…"

Silence.

Processing.

Neural connections slowly rebooting.

And then—

Harumi shot upright so fast the futon wrapped around her ankle like it was trying to drag her back into the dream world.

"WHAT?! THE MONKEY IS OUT THERE ALONE IN THE COLD AT THIS HOUR?! THAT'S A CRIME!"

Izumi, without opening her eyes:

"Haru… it's two in the morning…"

"EXACTLY THE HOUR WHEN A STUFFED ANIMAL SUFFERS THE MOST!"

Izumi rolled over.

"Good luck… midnight heroine…"

Harumi was already on her feet.

Or trying to be.

She tripped over the blanket.Hit her knee on the corner of the door.Whispered a dramatic "ow."

Mei watched with absolute hope.

Harumi grabbed the first clothes she could find.

The hoodie was inside out.The pants were clearly Izumi's and dragged across the floor.

Why do teenagers wear pants wide enough for camping?

And, for reasons no one would ever understand…

She put on an apron.

Yes.

An apron.

"For emergencies," she muttered with questionable dignity.

Mei appeared wearing oversized slippers that went ploc ploc down the hallway.

Before they reached the door—

"Where are you going?"

Takeru stood in the corridor.

Hair slightly messy, but posture firm.

Eyes completely awake.

Harumi pointed dramatically at the darkness beyond the door.

"To rescue Kuma-chan!"

Mei nodded gravely.

Takeru sighed.

Calm.

Controlled.

"I know where he is."

Harumi froze.

"YOU WHAT?"

"At Grandpa's house."

The world stopped.

Grandpa's house?

Harumi blinked.

Grandpa's house? So they… have a house? They left… a house?

She swallowed.

Her heart, which seconds ago had been focused on a stuffed monkey, was now trying to process something much bigger.

"W-What do you mean… Grandpa's house?"

Takeru was already putting on his coat.

Simple movements.

Practical.

No drama.

"We left him there when we moved out."

Moved out.

The words lingered in the air.

Mei grabbed the hem of her brother's coat.

"He'll be scared all alone…"

Harumi made a decision instantly.

Mission activated.

"Then we're going to get him."

Takeru looked at her.

Evaluating.

Measuring something.

"It's cold."

"I've survived worse. Like the office printer."

He didn't understand the reference.

But he accepted it.

Izumi's voice floated from the bedroom:

"If you freeze to death, don't wake me."

"THANK YOU FOR THE MORAL SUPPORT!" Harumi shouted back.

And so, at 2:30 in the morning, three figures stepped into the silent street:

One adult wearing an apron over the wrong hoodie. One tiny girl in gigantic slippers. And one boy walking slightly ahead, like he'd done this before.

The wind was cold.

Mei moved closer to Harumi.

By instinct, Harumi took her hand.

Takeru noticed.

But said nothing.

He simply slowed his pace.

So they could keep up.

For the first time, the dynamic was clear:

Takeru — calm.Determined.Almost too protective for his age.

Harumi — nervous.Anxious.But going anyway.

Mei — between them.Trusting someone would always hold her hand.

None of them knew that this midnight walk was about far more than rescuing a toy.

And Harumi was definitely not prepared for what she would find at "Grandpa's" house.

But for now—

It was just a mission.

Save Kuma-chan.

And prevent an emotional crime against a stuffed monkey.
