Chapter 3 - the basics

POV: Roair

I woke up on the floor outside that bastard's dirty as-home. I tried to untie myself but failed and let out a loud groan. I looked at the sky and realized it was morning and not evening. Damn it. No, no—Isnau is going to kill me! I haven't got his money. I need to run or hide or something!

I rushed the rope off and used a bit of fire magic, which burned my back a bit thanks to that waste-of-breath Narctot who tied my hands in that uncomfortable as- way. I stood up and was able to run when I heard a very familiar voice that still pisses me off.

"Hey, Jakey, where are you going?"

POV change: Narctot

As I asked this question, Jakey threw a fireball at me, and I used arua to move out of the way. I looked dead at him.

"Come on, bro, I was going to ask you a question."

He replied, "Take your question and shove it!"

I ran forward in a blur of motion and kicked him in the gut. He groaned loudly as my foot connected to his stomach, then grabbed my leg as I tried to pull it back and he used arua.

"What the hell, Jakey? Have you been holding out on me?"

I smirked. He looked confused at the blue energy surrounding him, then got a cocky smile on his face and threw my leg to the side and ran forward—which was not a good idea. It allowed me to pivot on my left foot and slam my fist into his jaw. I grabbed him before he could go flying.

"Hey, Jakey, you still up, man?" he yelled.

"My name is Roair, you waste of breath." I grabbed Jakey's throat.

"Hey, dude, how do you use magic?" Roair couldn't breathe, therefore he couldn't speak, so I let him drop.

"So Magic?" I asked.

"Why the hell would I tell you?" I grabbed him by the hair and made him look me in the eyes. "If you don't, I'll kill you."

I lied, of course, but he seemed to believe it. So roair told me to sit down, which I did, and he put his hands on my back and pushed mana into me—which was a red color. When I felt the mana, it just clicked in my hand, and I lit my hand up with a fireball.

Roair looked shocked and asked, "How the hell did you get it that fast?"

I smirked. What can I say? I'm a genius. I thought. But if anything, you're the real genius—you use arua as a mage. Much harder. The only reason I am able to is because I made this body to be able to. You're just pure talent.

I looked at him with some respect. He did not see this, though.

I asked, "Hey, dude, why do you look so scared? You've been looking around for a while."

Roair replied, "Because someone can't pay their damn debts, and now I can't pay my boss, so he will definitely try to kill me. Thanks to you."

I looked at him. "You work for Isnau? Makes sense. But why do I owe you money anyway?"

"You own me because of the game we played at the tavern. We put money on the line. I won."

I replied, "Oh, that makes sense then. So Isnau is going to try to kill you because you didn't pay him?"

He looked at me like I was dumb. "Never mind, you already told me. But hey, hate a guy for wanting confrontation. Welp, good luck with that."

I stood and was about to walk back into my place.

"He knows about you too. Yesterday morning he asked for his money. I told him I had to get it from you."

I looked back at his grin. The sad part is I didn't even know if he was lying. I sighed and said, "Ok. So you want my help?"

He nodded.

"Ok, I guess." I walked inside my house and came back with a black shirt on.

"Let's go,"I said.

"Where?" He replied.

"I have no clue, mate, but I want to see this place a bit better."

He looked at me like I was crazy because we both have a man after our heads. He shook his head in confusion, pulled on a hat, and pulled a mask up. I looked back and laughed because he looked like a cartoon villain.

"You look so dumb," I laughed.

He replied, "Shut up. He knows my face, not yours, as–hole."

"show me around," I said.

He replied, "What are you, my wife or something?"

"No, you're not good enough to be my husband," I said. He laughed, and I smiled.

We continued to walk, and he showed me some shops I didn't have money to go in, and good views, most of which were actually disappointing. But one was not—the homes of the nobles. Compared to our homes, those mansions looked beautiful. But compared to other kingdoms, they would be poor.

I looked at them, and unbeknownst to me, a girl and her twin brother were doing the same thing—but for different reasons.

"Hey, sis? Do you think we could ever live in one of those places?"

She laughed at my question. "Of course not, we aren't noble blood." She picked up the medicine to help with her mother's disease.

"Hey, sis, is mom ok?"

"Listen, Jaie, mom is going to be fine. Elise, you don't have to lie. She has lycanthropy in its worst form. I heard you and dad talking about it." She looked at my face, which showed great grief. She smiled softly at me and held me.

"Jaie, it's ok. She's not going to turn into a werewolf. She has the disease from her great-grandfather, who was a werewolf. You know the stories about Pa Ariar—tough, strong. She will get through this. She's strong just like him."

Jaie looked at his sister and asked a question that she herself had been avoiding.

"Does that mean we have the werewolf disease, and it only hit mother in the brain? It skipped the rest of her body. What if it doesn't with us?"

Elise sighed and replied, "I don't know, Jaie, but I do know if we do, we will get through it together."

She smiled and looked at the setting sun.
