Chapter 4 - The Second Trial

In the dark tunnel brightened by the shade of sun from the opening on the corners of the tunnel, a small door with ancient patterns embedded on it.

Ding!

[You have entered the trial zone.]

[Enter the Tomb to start the trial.]

A message popped out before Johan's dark eyes.

I think I need to finish this trial thing to return back; it's a pain to keep my mouth shut. If I speak, it might create suspicion for my brother or anyone else. I don't have this guy's memories yet. I am responding only based on my basic intuition.

The coat was removed and placed at the corner where no trash was present. The black iron handle was pulled, and the door opened with the emergence of a fast wind with no stench.

It's just like the last time; I need to go in there in order to go back to my world. I have no advantage here despite being transmigrated into an unknown world. This time, with my experience, I can easily break through this. There is no need to decide, but...I need at least one weapon to safeguard myself if any other creature pops out of nowhere.

Jump!

Eek!

Blub, blub.

In a dark cave, Johan swam upward and maintained his stability in the water. He took his breath and was surprised about the situation he is in.

"What's this, underwater? It's exactly the same as the other one."

Johan swam through the water to reach the land with the large ancient door. He removed his white shirt and placed it on a large stone to let it dry.

A faint blue glow in the lion's eyes, which had wings on its back. The Griffin's eye glowed this time. The two griffins on either side of the door looked rusty and dirty. The large door was opened automatically as Johan approached it with slow steps.

The giant hallway with old paintings on the wall started to tremble suddenly as the messages popped.

[Welcome to the second trial.]

[Defeat the Tomb boss to pass the trial.]

[The low-level monsters are spawned to test the Gocher.]

The tomb realigned into a narrow pathway with torch lights with fire lit along the side of the path.

"Gocher?"

Wait, before that, why do I need to defeat the boss? Can't I just go across the traps and simply reach the final point? I thought it would be easy like that. It's a strenuous process.

Many green-colored cunning goblins spawned from flashing random-colored glitches suddenly. They were half of the height of Johan. The eyes of Johan didn't move; he showed no hesitation.

All he thought was only one phrase,

"Hesitation is defeat."

Johan didn't look for the small fries; he immediately lunged towards the goblin with the dagger and tried to kick it in the stomach area. The fast-moving goblins immediately retreated, and the goblin behind it jumped and pushed its dagger into the left shoulder.

Splash! Blood flowed out from the veins in the shoulder region. Johan grabbed the goblin and smashed it to the ground, with his body falling towards the ground at the same time.

The goblin that dodged his attack back then came towards Johan. Johan, who now had the dagger of the fallen goblin, thrust it to

Eek!

The goblin that dodged his attack back then came towards him; Johan, who now had the dagger of the fallen goblin, thrust it into its neck with accuracy. Following that, he pushed the short dagger into the heart region to ensure its KO.

Ding!

[You defeated an armed goblin.]

[You defeated an armed goblin.]

[Rewards will be issued based on the final assessment.]

Ding!

[You do not possess the corresponding fragment of knowledge to use the mana channeling.]

[Mana channeling cannot be used with a dagger.]

[Gocher temporarily cannot access the library.]

Johan took a heavy breath; though he is well aware of the martial techniques he learned back then when he was an adventurer, he doesn't possess a well-adapted body to support his high-level techniques now. It's said that technique eventually overtakes strength, but it is true only to a certain point. At the threshold point, he would be unable to fight or run out of stamina.

Ding!

[A low-level goblin has spawned]!!

[A low-level goblin has spawned]!!

Johan fought the incoming green goblins, defeating them with his right hand. His injured left shoulder prevented him from using his left hand.

I need to finish this fast and stop the bleeding, or else, instead of these goblins killing me, I will be dead due to that small injury. Tch!

[You defeated 3 low-level goblins.]

Johan noticed that the carcasses of the goblins did not fade away from the tomb in contrast to how they appeared.

I wonder what use they have. I think their body parts are used to make some weapons or...um...maybe some items or magical accessories. For now, let's focus on going to the treasure chamber. But the tomb realigned itself; I think the path and the traps won't be much different.

Johan walked a few meters, reaching a big hall with a large white snake staring at him. Its scales are shiny like pearls, and it had no fangs, and it does not show any malice towards the large serpents. The eyes became blue in color as it irradiated the whole area with blue color.

Flash!

What's this! Why am I in a desert? It's supposed to be an easy trial, as it is the second one!

"Sandy dunes, scorchy sun, bleeding injury, no shirt, I got the title The Man of Bad Luck."

The desert had been quiet for hours, the kind of silence that pressed against Johan's ears and made him feel like the world had forgotten him. Hot wind swept across the dunes, carrying fine sand that stung his face every few seconds.

The sun above him felt like it was sitting on his shoulders.

....

Every few steps, his boots sank deeper. The ground looked solid, but the desert always tricked the eye. He stopped once when he heard a rattling sound under the sand. Johan crouched low, lifted a handful of dust, and tossed it lightly. A patch of ground shifted, revealing the pale scales of a sand viper before it slipped away.

Johan cursed under his breath and started walking faster. His throat was dry.

"Yeah, you stay down there," he said quietly, backing off.

Minutes later, the wind eased, and the world shaped itself again. Through the thinning haze, Johan spotted something, a dark hole in the sky as it glitched randomly.

He kept moving until the wind changed, suddenly stronger, pushing at him with enough force that he had to lean forward to keep balance.

The feet went into the sand as he walked on the desert. Suddenly he coughed, spitting blood.

Ding!

[The poison has activated]!

[Finish the trial quickly]!

"How am I supposed to finish this if I don't know what to do? Wait..."

He noted the pulsing poison and the impossible heat. "A hallucination," he realized, staring at the perfectly dry sand. The white serpent hadn't attacked his body; it attacked his mind. The only way to break a full-sensory illusion was a systemic shock, something the illusion couldn't fake. He wiped the dagger clean and took a steadying breath. He thrust the blade into his own chest. A sharp pain, real pain, was felt at his chest; the knife edge penetrated through him. Blood poured out, and the world went dark. He died in the desert, silent.

....

[You have found the way to remove the illusions with pain.]

[You are now immune to the illusions.]

[Get away from the White Sarpa]!!!
