Chapter 119 - Chapter 119: The Price of the Glass

Lina stared at Jax's sleeping face. The black cracks on his neck were dark and quiet now.

The words the deep voice had shouted still rang in her ears. The key is blood. The key is the boy in the glass.

"He means the real Kai," Lina whispered. She looked up at Mira, Seren, and Nia. "The cage under the academy isn't locked with a metal pin. It is locked with Kai. We have to get him out of the mirror."

Mira's face went pale. "But the mirror took him. How do we get him back?"

"We go in after him," Lina said. Her voice was steady, but her hands were shaking.

They left the broken infirmary and ran down the dark stairs to the deep basement. The air grew colder with every step. The heavy smell of the black lake was gone, replaced by the sharp, clean smell of cold glass and old dust.

They reached the heavy stone door at the very bottom of the stairs. This was the Mirror Door. This was where the real Kai was taken.

But Lina stopped walking.

Standing right in front of the stone door was the False Kai.

He was not smiling. His face was completely blank. His hands hung loosely at his sides. He looked like a statue made of pale marble.

"You cannot go in," he said. His voice was flat. It had no echo.

"Move," Lina said. She stepped in front of her friends. "We know the truth. We need the real Kai to seal the cage."

The False Kai tilted his head. The movement was stiff and wrong. "The cage is already broken. The water is rising. The thing beneath the stone is waking up. If you bring the boy out, the water will take the whole academy."

"If we don't bring him out, the water takes everything anyway," Nia said. She raised her hands, and her blue magic began to glow.

The False Kai did not look at her magic. He only looked at Lina.

"The mirror is a place of balance," he said softly. "It is full right now. It holds the boy. If you want him to come out, the glass needs something else to hold."

Lina's breath caught in her throat. She knew what he was going to say.

"A trade," the False Kai whispered. "One goes in. One comes out. If you want the real Kai to return to the waking world, someone must take his place in the dark."

He took one slow step forward. His empty, dark eyes locked onto Lina's face.

"You are marked for a rewrite, Lina. Your name is already changing. The mirror will accept you easily. If you walk through this door, the real Kai will step out. But you will be trapped in the glass forever."

Mira grabbed Lina's arm. Her grip was so tight it hurt. "No!" Mira cried. "Lina, no! We will find another way!"

"There is no other way," the False Kai said. He pointed a pale finger at the stone door. "The water is at the door. The cage is breaking. Give me your name, Lina. Walk into the glass. Or watch everyone you love drown."

The stone door behind him began to hum. A faint, cold light leaked through the cracks. The real Kai was in there. He was waiting.

Lina looked at the heavy stone door. Then she looked at Mira's terrified face, and Seren's tear-filled eyes. She thought about the memory of Kai's laugh that she had already lost. She thought about the empty space in her mind.

She took a deep breath. She let go of Mira's hand.

"Okay," Lina whispered.
