Chapter 138 - Chapter 138: The Echo of a Name

The morning sun finally broke through the high windows of the belfry. The light hit the giant golden sphere, casting a warm, peaceful glow over the dusty stone floor.

The grinding of the gears had stopped. The black water was gone. The academy was safe.

But on the floor, Mira was still crying.

She held Lina's hands, pressing them to her own wet cheeks. "Please," Mira sobbed. "Please, Lina. Look at me. It's me. It's Mira."

Lina sat perfectly still. Her posture was straight, her hands limp in Mira's grip. She looked at Mira with wide, completely white eyes. There was no recognition. There was no warmth. There was nothing at all.

"Why is water leaking from your eyes?" Lina asked. Her voice was flat and monotone. "Are your eyes broken? I can fix them."

Mira let out a broken wail and buried her face in Lina's shoulder. Lina did not hug her back. She just sat there, staring blankly at the wall, like a doll waiting to be played with.

Nia and Reyon sat nearby, exhausted and bruised. Reyon was staring at his feet, mourning the shadow he had lost. Nia was rubbing her temples, her blue magic completely drained.

"She is gone," Reyon whispered, his voice hollow. "The ink erased her. She is just an empty vessel now."

"No," Seren said.

Everyone looked up. Seren was kneeling a few feet away. Her hands were pressed hard over her ears, but her eyes were wide and focused. She was trembling violently.

"Seren?" Nia asked gently. "What is it? Are you hearing the reflections?"

"No," Seren gasped. She slowly lowered her hands. "I am not hearing the dead. I am hearing... her."

Seren crawled over to Lina. She looked at the girl's blank, white eyes. "Her soul isn't gone," Seren explained, her voice shaking. "The ink just wiped her mind clean. It erased the surface. But an echo leaves a mark on the air. The Lina from yesterday, the Lina who loved us, the Lina who fought so hard... that echo is still trapped in the space around her."

Mira lifted her head, her face red and wet. "Can you bring it back? Can you give it to her?"

"I don't know," Seren cried. "Echoes are for the dead. Lina isn't dead, but her mind is. If I try to push an echo into a living brain, it might shatter her completely."

"Do it," Lina said suddenly.

Everyone froze. Lina was looking at Seren. Her white eyes were unblinking. "If I am broken, fix me. I do not like this empty feeling. It is too quiet."

Seren took a deep, shaky breath. She nodded. "Okay. Okay, I will try."

Seren moved behind Lina. She gently placed her hands on either side of Lina's head. She closed her eyes and opened her mind, reaching out into the magical ether.

At first, there was nothing. Just a vast, terrifying white void.

Then, Seren heard it.

It was faint, like a whisper in a hurricane. It was the sound of Lina laughing. It was the sound of Lina saying, 'I will remember for both of us.' It was the sound of Lina's fierce, stubborn love for her friends.

Seren grabbed hold of the echo. She pulled it down from the air and pushed it into Lina's mind.

Lina gasped. Her back arched.

The white in her eyes suddenly cracked. It looked like ice breaking under pressure. Dark, warm color flooded back into her irises. The blankness shattered.

Lina collapsed forward, coughing and gasping for air. She clutched her head, crying out as a hundred memories slammed back into her brain all at once. She remembered Kai. She remembered the mirror. She remembered the terrifying emptiness of the ink.

"Lina!" Mira screamed, wrapping her arms around her tightly.

"I remember," Lina sobbed into Mira's neck. "I remember. I remember everything."

They held each other on the floor, crying and shaking. The nightmare was finally over. They had survived.

Then, the heavy oak doors of the belfry slowly creaked open.

The girls froze. Lina wiped her tears and looked up.

Standing in the doorway was the Headmaster. He was flanked by four senior teachers. They were not holding weapons. They were not looking angry.

The Headmaster looked at the giant golden sphere. He looked at the sealed cracks. Then, he looked down at the exhausted, battered students.

Slowly, the Headmaster began to clap.

"Brilliant," the Headmaster said, his voice smooth and echoing in the quiet room. "Truly brilliant. We thought the cage would hold for another decade, but you children have reinforced it perfectly."

Lina stood up, pulling Mira behind her. Her eyes were dark and furious. "What are you talking about?"

The Headmaster smiled. It was a cold, terrible smile.

"Did you really think we didn't know the water was rising, Lina? Did you think we didn't know the reflections were escaping?" The Headmaster stepped into the room. "We needed a catalyst. We needed someone brave enough, and foolish enough, to sacrifice their own identity to seal the glass."

He stopped a few feet away, looking down at Lina with gleaming, predatory eyes.

"Thank you for saving the academy, Lina," the Headmaster whispered. "Now, the real work begins."
