The Grand Hall was unrecognizable from the dark, terrifying place it had been just months ago.
For the Graduation Banquet, the hall had been transformed into a breathtaking vision of light and color. Long banners of azure and gold silk hung from the high ceilings, fluttering gently in a warm, magical breeze. Hundreds of glowing lotus flowers made of pure, soft light floated in the air, casting a gentle, pearlescent glow over the students.
It looked like a scene straight out of a beautiful dream.
Lina stood near the center of the room, surrounded by her friends. They wore their new midnight-blue graduation robes, the silver thread catching the light of the floating lotuses. Mira looked radiant, her memory fully healed and her smile bright. Seren and Reyon stood close together, watching the magical displays with wide, amazed eyes.
At the front of the hall, Headmistress Shen raised her hands. The gentle chatter of the students faded into a respectful silence.
"Today, we do not just celebrate the end of your studies," Headmistress Shen said, her voice carrying clearly through the vast room without needing a spell. "We celebrate the breaking of a long, dark shadow. You have survived the trials of the Academy of Veils. But more importantly, you have healed it."
She gestured to the servants, who stepped forward carrying trays of delicate, translucent paper lanterns.
"It is time for the Lighting of the Spirit Lanterns," the Headmistress announced. "Release your hopes into the sky. Let them guide the next generation."
Each student took a lantern. Lina held hers gently in her hands. The paper was thin and fragile, but it hummed with a faint, warm magic.
"Close your eyes," Headmistress Shen instructed. "Channel your spiritual energy into the paper. Give it your brightest memory."
Lina closed her eyes. She thought of the sun on the old stone bridge. She thought of Mira's laugh. She thought of Seren's bravery, Reyon's loyalty, and Nia's fierce heart. And then, she thought of Kai. She thought of the warm, golden light of his soul as he faded into the sky.
She pushed that feeling down into her arms and into the lantern.
When she opened her eyes, her lantern was glowing with a brilliant, steady light. Around her, hundreds of other students released their lanterns. They floated upward, a sea of pink, blue, and white lights drifting toward the enchanted ceiling, looking like a river of stars flowing in reverse.
But Lina's lantern did not float up.
Suddenly, the palm of her right hand grew hot. The faint, golden word Kai beneath her skin flared to life. It pulsed with a blinding, warm light.
"Lina?" Mira whispered, noticing the intense glow. "Your hand..."
Before Lina could answer, the golden light from her palm dripped down and touched her lantern. The lantern's light instantly changed from a soft white to a deep, brilliant gold.
Then, the lantern stopped floating. It turned and began to sink.
It passed straight down through the solid stone floor of the Grand Hall, as if the rock were made of water.
Gasps echoed through the room. The other students pointed, their faces filled with awe and confusion. Headmistress Shen stepped forward, her eyes wide.
Lina knelt and pressed her glowing hand flat against the stone floor.
The stone rippled. A wave of golden light spread outward from her palm, turning the solid floor completely transparent for a hundred feet in every direction.
The students crowded around, looking down into the deep foundation of the academy.
They did not see the dark, sealed lake. They did not see the black water or the iron cages.
Instead, deep beneath the earth, they saw a massive, breathtaking sight.
It was a tree. But it was not made of wood and leaves. It was made entirely of pure, crystalline light. Its trunk was as thick as a tower, and its glowing, golden roots wrapped around the entire underground foundation of the academy, holding the earth together in a gentle, protective embrace.
"The Spirit Root," Headmistress Shen breathed, her voice trembling with shock. "The legends were true. The very first Founder didn't just build a school. She planted a World Tree to nourish the land."
The dark Headmasters had built their cages and their dark magic right on top of it, burying the beautiful, ancient magic beneath layers of stone and shadow. They had hidden the true heart of the academy.
Down in the depths, the massive crystalline tree began to shift. Its glowing branches swayed, though there was no wind.
The golden light from Lina's hand was connecting to the tree. The roots were reacting to her golden ink.
Suddenly, a deep, resonant chime echoed through the floor, vibrating in the chests of every student in the hall. It was a sound of pure, ancient joy.
The tree was waking up. And it was reaching out to Lina.
