Chapter 146 - Chapter 146: The Law of Souls

The iron brush descended.

Lina squeezed her eyes shut. She could feel the dark, red magic radiating from the tip. It was the magic of erasure. It was going to wipe her cultivation, wipe her memories, and wipe her very identity. She was going to become a blank slate, just like she had been in the clock tower.

But this time, she wouldn't have the golden ink to save her.

"Wait!"

The voice cracked through the heavy, suffocating air.

Mira was forcing her way forward. The spiritual suppression field was crushing her, making her nose bleed, but she kept pushing. She stumbled into the alleyway, her eyes locked on the Censor.

"You cannot strike her!" Mira gasped, wiping the blood from her lip. "You are applying the wrong law!"

The Censor paused. The iron brush hovered mere inches from Lina's forehead. The heat from it singed her eyelashes. He turned his blank, terrifying eyes toward Mira.

"A mortal cultivator dares to question the Law of Severance?" the Censor said, his voice like grinding stones. "She altered a mortal's fate. She used spiritual energy to heal a mortal body. The debt is absolute."

"She didn't heal his body!" Mira yelled. She pointed a shaking finger at the merchant man, who was still standing in the alley, looking confused but healthy. "Use your brush! Scan his soul! Look at what the parasite was actually doing!"

The Censor's eyes narrowed. He did not lower the brush, but he flicked his wrist. A beam of red light shot from the iron tip and hit the merchant in the chest.

The man gasped, his eyes rolling back.

Mira didn't wait for the Censor to speak. She tapped into her Echo power. She didn't listen to the dead; she listened to the echo of the magic that had just been broken. She heard the screech of the shadow-leech as it dissolved.

"It wasn't eating his lifespan," Mira said, her voice gaining strength. "It was eating his memories. It was a Mirror parasite. A remnant of the Academy's dark magic. It was stealing his identity, piece by piece. By the time it was done, he wouldn't have died physically. He would have just become an empty, smiling shell."

Mira looked up at the Censor, her eyes fierce. "The Law of Severance forbids cultivators from altering a mortal's physical fate. It forbids us from extending their life or changing their destiny. But it does not forbid us from stopping a spiritual theft! Lina didn't change his mortal fate. She restored his stolen soul. Under the ancient Law of Souls, that is not interference. That is justice."

The alley was dead silent. The only sound was the wind rustling the paper lanterns above.

The Censor stared at Mira. Then, he looked down at the merchant. The red light faded from the man's chest.

Suddenly, the merchant blinked. He looked at his hands, then at the Censor, and finally at Lina.

"My... my daughter," the man whispered, tears suddenly spilling down his cheeks. "I forgot her name. I forgot her face. But I remember her now. I remember everything."

The Censor lowered the iron brush.

He looked at the golden chains binding Lina. The chains were no longer glowing with angry, searing heat. They were humming with a soft, neutral light. The karmic debt had been recalculated. The universe recognized the truth. The Law of Severance had not been broken.

"The Law of Souls," the Censor muttered. His voice was still cold, but the murderous intent was gone. "An archaic clause. Rarely invoked."

With a flick of his wrist, the golden chains shattered into a thousand pieces of harmless light.

Lina dropped to the cobblestones, gasping for air as her spiritual energy rushed back into her veins. Mira immediately rushed to her side, helping her up.

"You are cleared of the karmic debt," the Censor said, sliding the iron brush into his belt. "However, the presence of a Mirror parasite in the mortal realm is a severe crime. It means the dark magic of the Academy of Veils has leaked beyond the veil."

He stepped closer to Lina. He reached out and pressed a cold, silver seal onto the back of her hand. It burned for a second, then faded into a mark that looked like an unblinking eye.

"You are now marked by the Imperial Censors," he said softly. "We will be watching you. If you break the Law of Severance again, if you interfere with mortal fate for any reason other than spiritual justice... I will not pause the brush next time."

The Censor turned and leaped into the air. The golden chains reformed around him, and he shot up into the purple sky, disappearing into the clouds.

The heavy spiritual pressure vanished. The bustling noise of the city rushed back into their ears. The merchant bowed deeply to Lina and scurried away, clutching his memories to his chest.

Lina leaned against the brick wall of the alley, her legs shaking. She looked at the silver eye on the back of her hand.

"We are being hunted," Nia whispered, staring at the sky. "The moment we stepped out of the academy, we became targets."

"But we are alive," Reyon said, his shadow stretching out to comfort him. "And we know the truth. The dark magic isn't just in the academy. It's spreading."

Lina pushed herself off the wall. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the golden compass. The needle was still pointing north, spinning slightly faster now.

"The Censors are watching us," Lina said, her voice steady. "But the Spirit Root called to us. There are other cages. Other shadows. We can't stop now just because the rules are hard."

She looked at her friends. They were battered, bleeding, and terrified. But they were standing tall.

"We need to leave the city," Lina said. "The Censors will track our spiritual energy. We need to find a place where the mortal laws don't reach."

"The forest to the north," Seren whispered, her eyes distant. "I can hear the echoes of the trees out there. They are crying. The soil is sick."

Lina nodded. She gripped the compass tightly. "Then that is where we go."

They slipped out of the alley, pulling their hoods low, and disappeared into the crowded, lantern-lit streets of the mortal city. They were no longer just students. They were fugitives. And the real war for the world had just begun.
