Mary walked slowly toward the tall iron gates of her employer house her hands trembling as she pushed them open. The familiar scent of jasmine drifted through garden but tonight it brought her no comfort her mind was still spinning from the doctor's words.
She paused at the doorstep taking a deep breath before stepping inside. The house was quiet except for ticking clock in the hallway. Mrs Carter her employer look up from the sofa as Mary entered.
" you're back later ", Mrs Carter said her voice calm but sharp always " did the doctor say what was wrong with you? "
Mary lips parted but no sound came out
She didn't know what to say " ..uh little fatigue." Mrs Carter eye her suspiciously.
Then sighed " well go get some rest , tomorrow will be a busy day."
Mary nodded quickly and hurried to her small room at the back of the house. The moment the door closed she sank onto her bed , clutching her stomach her heart ached fear and confusion. Daniel's child , the though both terrified and conforted her.
She buried her face in her hands whispered " what am I going to do now? "
Mary and Mrs Carter shared a bond that are far beyond employer and employee. They were friends bound by loyalty, gratitude and shared a loss years ago.
Mrs Carter had saved Mary's life in a moment of danger. A debt that Mary never forget.
