Chapter 38 - Falling for a Goddess

Adam was not as resolute as Wimblen in the virtue of science. He was lazy about his passion, but was far more intelligent than his brother. Wimblen knew what he was capable of, only if he didn't limp.

"Listen brother" Adam whispered staring at the tea pot "I am getting bored"

The steam blew off

"I need something more fascinating"

Wimblen removing the newspaper off his face replied,

"Why don't we work on the surveillance core"

"Oh, the thing that works as watcher" Adam was excited

"Yep, the thing that shows what's going on all around the world…"

"While you don't move a muscle" Adam giggled

"That's right- exactly like father told us" Wimblen laughed too…

Partaking in the tea, the duo was set ablaze to create the invention their father long wanted.

The chimneys roared…

Birds fluttered away…

The metal grinning began and the co workers assembled the parts…

The energy core was utmost, followed by the metal nuggets that held it to the main body. When the switch was turned around, the nuggets would release nitrous gases- activating the core. But that was just the laurels of the core. Now the progression for pipe connections and alchemic circles were transformed.

Estra was designing the floating spheres that would work as a watcher (an eye that would record everything).

The creation was colossal, with complex fibrous linkings. .

"Start the core" Wimblen commanded

Adam followed it as initialised the prototype.

Whirling began and overwhelming energy flooded the system. The rotator worked- pumping the energy through the entire kinetic system.

The fibres and pipes were igniting, trying to collect the energy to the tap root.

It came closer…

The energies fused…

The main branch espionaging the Alchemist circle brightened…

But, the alchemy failed.

The power never awakened, so the watchers never left the design.

"What happened?" Wimblen was enraged and confused

"The power source isn't enough" Adam replied, figuring the problem instantly.

"This source engine is one of the finest" the mad alchemist jottled the fact "what more can we give?"

"Hmmm" Adam thought "Grimgon is the ultimatum"

"Oh, that rare commodity" Estra whistled "But its sources are unknown"

"Not just unknown, Estra" Wimblen was shocked "nobody has ever found them and returned"

"That's it" Adam turned excited, he tied his pony and shouted "I will go find it"

"All the best finding it" Wimblen was frustrated by the failure

Day and night for several rises and sets, Adam kept on with his survey. He searched through several books and tomes.

One such bright evening he discovered an unknown end of the library. A place that would surely cache hideous content. A day- that was all he needed to find the book with adequate information. The peculiar book wasn't titled with letters, nor was it encrypted with the author's name. It instead had some strange digits encoded.

The very next morning Wimblen woke up. He was still drenched by grief of repeated failure.

"Ah, the head still hurts" he whispered to the grilled walls

The big man then visited his brother's room, ready to catalyse the battle between pursuit and sleep. But for the first time in his life, Adam wasn't sleeping. His bed was empty. Wimblen was struck with the unmitigated possibility. He searched thoroughly around the desks and carpet.

A piece of paper finally reflected his eyes:

How are you brother?

Long time no see… even though we met just yesterday.

I finally found the source of Grimgon. And yes, you were right- it is going to be heck of a journey. But still, it is the change I desired.

It won't be soon, but I will return, one way or another.

And ofcourse, I won't be telling you the source, so you won't follow me to the leap hole.

Yours most intelligent,

Adam.

Back in the shrine in those early time, Erachna was nighly keeping it together. Her existence was on verge of a single cat- barely keeping her sustained.

"I won't let you die" she heard the cat whispering

"I have to…" she would reply "someday"

It was just her imagination, but at last it comforted her forsaken soul.

Days passed on as the cat had its soul detaching.

And the doomsday arrived, when the soul finally wandered off.

Erachna's body lost composure. It was fluidizing, summoned to the upper realms in tiny flickering specks.

"Thank you, my only companion" her eyes closed as her body relieved her best moments

It was the end… she thought

But little did she know it wasn't…

Her eyes opened in the same locale. The walls were old and crippled. But something was different, as the place was sturdy and cleaner.

"An accomplice" she thought.

That's when Adam lurked forth- through the entrance of the shrine.

"It's lovely around here" he smiled, gripping a basket of variegated flowers.

"Who are you?"

"Oh, pardon my intrusion" he said, "I'm Adam, a fellow from Imperial Town. Or you can say your last surviving believer"

"What brought you here?"

"Grimgon" he relied instant

"A scientist or mercenary it seems" she grinned

"Enough with the questions, Goddess" he picked some dirt "I think your cat should get a proper burial"

Erachna trembled as she rushed out of the shrine, her Paths barely detectable. What she saw was heart warming, a proper grave buried for her cat, who was resting on a warm bed in wooden stalks.

"Further proceedings are all yours" he conveyed

For Adam it wasn't a brief and insolent moment, but he knew for Erachna it meant a lot. The cat was the only hope she held onto for years, hiding in the dark corners of the shrine. Her lax grip over the cat's body, slowly lifted her to the grave.

It rested, without any moments, completing its mission.

"Goodbye, sweetheart" Erachna held her hands together as the cat faded into the sky.

Her memories with it weren't of the outside world, but still they were important. She would hold onto them till the last gasp.

Amidst the chaotic send off, Adam kept looking at the Goddess. His eyes tending solace her lips whispered. His hands gushing around her cheeks in his imagination.

Finally, the Alchemist found something more fascinating than science…
