Chapter 68 - Echoes of the Mirror

The chamber did not simply shake.

It reacted.

The moment the shadow twin vanished into the fractured mirror, a violent pulse surged through the council hall. Emerald light rippled across the walls, awakening dormant runes hidden beneath centuries of stone and glass. The spectral serpents circling overhead twisted violently, hissing as though they sensed an ancient force stirring beneath Virelia itself.

For a few terrible seconds, nobody moved.

Not Kael.

Not Elaris.

Not even Bloomfall.

The cracked Serpent's Crown hovered above its shattered pedestal, leaking threads of green-silver energy that drifted through the chamber like luminous smoke.

Then one of the council elders screamed.

His eyes had turned completely silver.

Without warning, he lunged toward the Crown.

"Elder Varos!" someone shouted.

Too late.

The moment his fingers reached the artifact, one of the spectral serpents struck.

Its translucent fangs pierced through his shadow.

Varos collapsed instantly.

Not dead.

But unconscious.

A visible layer of frost spread across his body as if the Crown itself had rejected him.

Fear rippled through the council.

The artifact was no longer dormant.

It was choosing.

And it clearly did not like being touched.

Elaris stepped forward, ignoring the burning sensation crawling through the prophecy runes etched along her arm.

"The Mirror Engine," she said.

Her voice cut through the panic.

Every eye turned toward her.

Bloomfall smiled.

Not surprised.

Not curious.

Amused.

"As expected," she murmured.

"You figured it out."

Kael's storm-grey gaze sharpened.

"Start talking."

Bloomfall's crystalline wings shifted slightly as she walked around the ruined chamber, examining the floating shards of glass.

"The Serpent's Crown was never the final relic."

Her fingers brushed one of the floating fragments.

The reflection inside showed a city burning beneath emerald skies.

"The Crown is only a key."

Silence settled over the room.

Even Xyren's holographic form seemed unusually still.

Bloomfall continued.

"Long before the kingdoms existed, before syndicates ruled cities and before hybrid bloodlines emerged, there was another creation."

She looked toward Elaris.

"The Mirror Engine."

The name seemed to echo through the chamber.

Something about it felt wrong.

Ancient.

Dangerous.

Elaris frowned.

"What is it?"

For the first time, Bloomfall's smile faded.

"A machine capable of reflecting reality itself."

The room fell silent.

Kael's grip tightened around his sword.

Xyren's projection flickered sharply.

"No..." he whispered.

Bloomfall glanced toward him.

"Oh yes."

She sounded almost pleased.

"The Engine doesn't create illusions."

Her gaze swept across the floating mirrors.

"It creates possibilities."

A chill ran down Elaris's spine.

She suddenly remembered the visions.

The alternate futures.

The fractured versions of themselves.

The burning cities.

The broken skies.

Bloomfall spread her arms.

"Every reflection you've seen so far?"

A pause.

"They were only echoes."

The runes on Elaris's arm burned hotter.

Pain shot through her veins.

She clenched her jaw.

Something was responding.

Not the Crown.

Something deeper.

Something connected to the Mirror Engine itself.

Kael noticed immediately.

He moved beside her without hesitation.

"You okay?"

The question was quiet.

Only for her.

Elaris nodded automatically.

But Kael didn't look convinced.

His eyes lingered on the glowing runes.

The concern in them felt strangely grounding amidst the chaos.

For a moment, she forgot about the council.

Forgot about Bloomfall.

Forgot about the Crown.

Then Xyren suddenly stiffened.

His holographic form flickered violently.

Static erupted across his body.

"Elaris."

His voice sounded distorted.

Layered.

Wrong.

Everyone turned.

Xyren pressed a hand against his temple.

Streams of emerald code raced across his projection.

"The Engine..."

Static crackled.

"It's already active."

The chamber froze.

"What?" Kael asked sharply.

Xyren's expression darkened.

"I thought we had more time."

Bloomfall laughed softly.

"You never had time."

At that exact moment, every floating shard in the room lit up.

One by one.

Dozens of reflections appeared.

Not random images.

Specific moments.

Specific futures.

In one reflection, Kael stood alone upon a ruined throne.

In another, Bloomfall wore the Serpent's Crown.

In another, Elaris's wings had become entirely mechanical, her eyes glowing with cold emerald light.

Then she saw something worse.

Xyren.

Bound in chains of living code.

Screaming.

The image vanished instantly.

But the damage was done.

Elaris felt her stomach drop.

"Xyren..."

He looked away.

That alone terrified her.

Because Xyren never looked away.

Outside, thunder rolled across the skyline.

The neon towers of Virelia flickered.

For a split second, every screen visible through the chamber windows displayed the same symbol.

A silver eye.

Watching.

Then it disappeared.

Council members began shouting.

Panic spread through the room.

"The city network—"

"Something breached the grid!"

"The security systems are failing!"

Xyren turned pale.

"The Engine."

His voice had lost all calm.

"It's awakening beneath Virelia."

The Crown pulsed violently.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

A shockwave exploded outward.

The floating reflections shattered.

Glass rained across the chamber.

And beneath the city—

Something answered.

A deep mechanical vibration echoed through the foundations of the skyscraper.

Not an earthquake.

Not an explosion.

A heartbeat.

Ancient.

Massive.

Alive.

Everyone felt it.

Bloomfall's smile returned.

Slow.

Victorious.

"There it is."

Kael immediately stepped in front of Elaris.

Pure instinct.

Pure protection.

Storm energy crackled across his blade.

"If that's the Engine..."

His eyes narrowed.

"Then someone is trying to wake it."

Bloomfall began walking toward the chamber exit.

"No."

She glanced over her shoulder.

Her violet eyes gleamed.

"Someone already has."

The doors opened.

Wind rushed into the chamber.

For a moment, her silhouette was framed against the neon skyline.

Then she stopped.

One final warning.

"When the Mirror Engine fully awakens, it won't ask who deserves power."

Her gaze settled on Elaris.

"It will reveal who truly becomes the monster."

And then she was gone.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Dangerous.

Far below the city, the ancient heartbeat echoed again.

Stronger this time.

Elaris looked down at the glowing runes on her arm.

The symbols were changing.

Rearranging themselves.

Forming something new.

A map.

Xyren saw it first.

His expression drained of color.

"No..."

Kael turned sharply.

"What is it?"

Xyren stared at the symbols.

Then at Elaris.

Then toward the city beneath them.

"The map..."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"It leads directly to the Mirror Engine."

Outside, another pulse shook the city.

And somewhere deep beneath Virelia—

Something finally opened its eyes.
