Chapter 71 - Shards of Neon

CH 25 — Echoes of the Other Starwing

The words refused to leave Elaris's mind.

You are the copy.

Hours had passed since the Mirror Engine shattered.

Hours since the other Elaris stepped from impossible glass and looked at her as though she were the mistake.

Yet the memory remained.

Sharp.

Unwelcome.

Alive.

The skyline of Lumivale stretched across the horizon beneath a storm-filled sky, its chrome towers glowing with rivers of neon light. Thousands of aerial drones drifted between skyscrapers while holographic advertisements flickered across the night like artificial constellations.

Beautiful.

Advanced.

Dangerous.

And somewhere within that city—

a new relic had awakened.

Elaris stood aboard the observation platform of a high-speed magrail transport, silver-blue winds pulling at her wings as the city grew larger in the distance.

Beside her, Xyren's holographic interface flickered continuously.

Streams of data raced across his emerald displays.

His expression looked troubled.

"Elaris."

She glanced toward him.

"What is it?"

Xyren hesitated.

A rare occurrence.

"The dimensional signature from the Mirror Engine has reappeared."

Silence followed.

Kael looked up immediately.

His storm-grey eyes narrowed.

"Location?"

Xyren projected a holographic map.

A red marker appeared near the center of Lumivale.

"The signal originates beneath the city."

A pause.

Then:

"It's identical to the energy signature of the other Elaris."

The platform suddenly felt colder.

Elaris's wings shifted slightly.

"You're saying she came here?"

"No."

Xyren's expression darkened.

"I'm saying she's already here."

The transport arrived twenty minutes later.

Lumivale swallowed them immediately.

Neon reflections painted the streets in shifting colors while automated traffic streamed through the city like rivers of light.

Yet something felt wrong.

People were running.

Emergency sirens echoed through nearby districts.

Security drones rushed overhead.

And above it all—

warning broadcasts flashed across every screen.

UNAUTHORIZED ARTIFACT ACTIVITY DETECTED.

CIVILIAN EVACUATION IN PROGRESS.

Kael's hand settled naturally on Stormfang.

"What happened?"

Xyren accessed nearby networks.

Thousands of data streams flooded his systems.

His expression hardened.

"An excavation team uncovered an ancient shard beneath the city."

A holographic image appeared.

At its center floated a crystal fragment pulsing with silver-green energy.

The moment Elaris saw it—

the runes on her arm ignited.

Pain surged through her veins.

Not physical.

Recognition.

The shard was connected to the Crown.

Connected to the Mirror Engine.

Connected to her.

And perhaps—

to the other Elaris.

The first explosion erupted three blocks away.

The ground shook.

Civilians screamed.

A shockwave rolled through the district.

Then came the machines.

Hundreds of them.

Mechanical sentinels poured from underground transit tunnels.

Their bodies were formed from black alloy and glowing emerald circuitry.

Not military.

Not corporate.

Something older.

Something awakened.

Their eyes lit simultaneously.

Then they attacked.

Kael moved first.

Stormfang erupted with lightning.

The nearest sentinel disappeared beneath a single strike.

Steel melted.

Circuits exploded.

The machine collapsed before it understood it had been destroyed.

More followed.

Dozens.

Kael advanced directly into them.

Every movement efficient.

Every strike lethal.

Lightning flashed between buildings.

Metal shattered.

The battlefield transformed into a storm.

Above him, Elaris launched into the sky.

Her wings unfolded completely.

Silver-blue feathers illuminated the district.

Energy surged through her systems.

Three sentinels accelerated toward a fleeing group of civilians.

Elaris intercepted instantly.

A burst of light erupted from her wings.

The machines disintegrated mid-air.

Fragments rained across the neon streets below.

Yet more continued arriving.

Far too many.

"This isn't random!" Xyren shouted through the comm-link.

"They're converging on the shard!"

At the center of the district, a towering vault rose above the surrounding structures.

Emergency shields surrounded it.

Inside—

the artifact pulsed.

Waiting.

Calling.

Then Elaris felt it.

A familiar presence.

Not nearby.

Not visible.

Watching.

The same sensation she felt within the Mirror Engine.

The same impossible energy.

Her breath caught.

Someone stood atop a distant skyscraper.

Motionless.

Silhouetted against the storm.

Silver-black wings.

Emerald eyes.

A perfect reflection.

The other Elaris.

For a brief moment—

their gazes met.

Across the city.

Across the chaos.

Across reality itself.

The Crown runes along Elaris's arm burned painfully.

The other Elaris smiled.

Then vanished.

"Elaris?"

Kael's voice snapped through the comm-link.

"What happened?"

She looked toward the empty rooftop.

Nothing remained.

Only rain.

Only shadows.

Only neon light.

But her heartbeat refused to slow.

Because she knew what she had seen.

The other Elaris wasn't hiding anymore.

She was hunting.

And whatever waited inside that vault—

both of them wanted it.

Below, the artifact shard pulsed brighter.

The ground beneath Lumivale trembled.

And somewhere deep beneath the city—

something ancient began to wake.
