Chapter 126 - THE FALL INSIDE VIRELITH

"HEIR DETECTED."

The words did not fade.

They remained inside the Root Throne Chamber.

Inside the walls.

Inside the roots.

Inside Kael's head.

He stared at the throne.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then the world disappeared.

Not the chamber.

Not the people around him.

Only Kael.

The sound of battle vanished first.

Then the crimson light.

Then the weight of Stormfang in his hand.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Kael's breath caught.

A heartbeat thundered somewhere beyond the black.

THUMP.

Light exploded across his vision.

Virelith stood before him.

Alive.

Kael stopped breathing.

The broken towers were gone.

Their dark surfaces shone beneath a sky streaked with blue and crimson auroras. Streams of light moved between buildings. Transit lines crossed the city like glowing veins. Roots climbed the walls—not wild and desperate as they were now, but carefully woven into the architecture.

The city was beautiful.

Alive.

A different heartbeat echoed through the streets.

THUMP.

Kael turned.

Someone stood before the Root Throne.

Their back was to him.

A long dark coat moved around their legs.

Storm energy crawled through the chamber.

And in their hand—

a blade.

Kael's eyes dropped.

Stormfang.

But it looked different.

The weapon was brighter.

Older.

Crimson and blue energy twisted around the blade in perfect balance.

The King's Fang.

A voice shouted somewhere behind the figure.

Kael couldn't understand the words.

The sound was distorted.

Broken.

Another voice answered.

Then crimson light flooded the chamber.

The figure before the throne lifted Stormfang.

For one impossible second, everything became silent.

Then the figure turned.

Kael froze.

The face remained hidden in shadow.

But the eyes—

His.

The same eyes stared back at him.

Kael took a step backward.

The figure opened his mouth.

This time, Kael understood.

"It must never be allowed to fall again."

The world shattered.

Kael came back to the Root Throne Chamber with a violent breath.

Only seconds had passed.

Elaris was turning toward him.

"Kael—"

The commander's voice cut through the chamber.

"NOW!"

Everything moved.

Soldiers rushed toward the Crimson Heart.

Kael lifted Stormfang.

Another flash struck him.

Blood across stone.

The Root Throne covered in crimson light.

Stormfang falling from someone's hand.

A scream—

Kael dropped to one knee.

His hand hit the floor.

The chamber blurred.

"Kael!"

Elaris started toward him.

But three soldiers moved between them.

Kael forced himself to look up.

The intruders were running.

Straight for the Heart.

"No…"

He tried to rise.

His vision shifted again.

A hand.

His hand.

Covered in blood.

Stormfang slipping from his fingers—

"Kael!"

Elaris's voice reached him through the memory.

He blinked.

The chamber returned.

But he still couldn't move.

The enemy was already halfway to the containment cradle.

AURIXA saw them.

She didn't hesitate.

She ran.

Kael watched her cross the chamber.

Not toward him.

Not toward safety.

Toward the Crimson Heart.

"AURIXA!" Xyren shouted.

She didn't look back.

The first intruder reached her.

AURIXA raised one hand.

The floor beneath him split open.

Living cables burst upward and wrapped around his legs.

The soldier fired.

AURIXA turned.

The blast struck a damaged pillar.

Stone exploded.

She threw herself sideways as debris crashed across the floor.

Another intruder rushed her.

A defense drone dropped from the ceiling.

Its single eye ignited.

AURIXA looked up.

"Target acquired."

The drone fired.

The intruder was thrown backward.

For half a second, AURIXA allowed herself to turn toward the Heart.

A transparent field began forming around the containment cradle.

Crimson light rose around her.

The chamber hummed.

Then the shield flickered.

AURIXA's expression changed.

"No."

The field weakened.

One side disappeared.

Another flickered.

The drone above her suddenly sparked.

AURIXA looked up.

"Move!"

The explosion threw her across the chamber.

She struck the floor hard.

The damaged drone crashed beside her.

Smoke rose around her.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she pushed herself up.

Thin lines of light flickered beneath the skin of her arm.

The Heart pulsed behind her.

Another intruder stepped closer.

AURIXA rose.

She placed herself between him and the containment cradle.

The soldier raised his weapon.

Elaris saw her.

"AURIXA!"

Roots exploded from the floor.

Elaris twisted through them, using the living network beneath Virelith like a path. A vine wrapped around an enemy's weapon and tore it from his hand.

Another attacked from her right.

She ducked.

Black energy sliced over her shoulder.

Elaris thrust her hand toward the wall.

Roots burst outward.

They formed around her like a shield.

Then she pushed forward.

But she was still too far.

AURIXA looked back at the Crimson Heart.

The fragment glowed softly.

Like it was listening.

Her eyes flickered.

"I remember this part."

Elaris froze.

"What?"

AURIXA kept staring at the Heart.

Another explosion shook the chamber.

"I was created to protect what remained."

Something in her voice changed.

Not mechanical.

Not like a system reporting an old command.

It sounded like memory.

Elaris's expression tightened.

"AURIXA, move!"

AURIXA turned.

An intruder was already beside her.

Elaris reached out.

Roots shot forward.

Too late.

Across the chamber, Xyren slammed his hand against an ancient control panel.

"Come on!"

The system flickered.

Nothing happened.

He hit it again.

"Do you have a restart button or something?"

The display answered with static.

Xyren stared.

"Great."

The static spread.

Ancient symbols appeared across the screen.

He leaned closer.

"What is that?"

The scanner in his hand suddenly shut down.

"Seriously?"

Then every light around him died.

Xyren went still.

A symbol appeared beneath his palm.

Gold.

Ancient.

His pupils narrowed.

Elaris saw it.

Patterns were moving inside his eyes.

"Xyren?"

He didn't answer.

His hand pressed against the panel.

The entire chamber shook.

A voice came from him.

And beneath it—

another.

Older.

Deeper.

"PROTECT THE CORE."

Every machine around him activated.

Sentinels turned.

Ancient defense systems opened inside the walls.

Xyren's body jerked backward.

BOOM!

He hit the floor.

The patterns vanished from his eyes.

For a second, he lay completely still.

Then he blinked.

Kael looked toward him through the blur of another memory.

Xyren sat up.

"What…"

Elaris stared at him.

"Xyren… what did you just do?"

He looked around.

The sentinels were moving.

Ancient machines were waking across the chamber.

"I…"

His eyes widened.

"...I did that?"

AURIXA, still standing between the enemy and the Heart, glanced toward him.

"Apparently."

Xyren looked at the activated systems.

Then back at AURIXA.

"I would like to state for the record that I had no idea what I was doing."

A blast hit the floor beside him.

He ducked.

"Still don't."

The enemy reached the containment cradle.

AURIXA stepped forward.

"Move."

She didn't.

The soldier raised his weapon.

"I said move."

"I cannot."

Behind her, the Crimson Heart pulsed.

The protective field flickered once.

Then died.

AURIXA looked at the empty space where the shield had been.

Her eyes narrowed.

The soldier moved.

Elaris was still fighting her way through the chamber.

Xyren was down.

Kael—

another flash hit him.

The Root Throne.

Blood.

Crimson light.

A voice screaming his name.

The enemy's blade came down.

CRACK!

Stormfang stopped it.

The impact sent blue and crimson lightning across the floor.

Kael stood between AURIXA and the attacker.

For one second, the entire chamber seemed to pause.

Kael's eyes lifted.

Blue storm energy burned through one.

Crimson through the other.

But they weren't fighting anymore.

The two powers moved together.

The soldier pulled against Stormfang.

Kael twisted the blade.

The weapon broke.

A controlled burst of lightning threw the intruder across the chamber.

Nothing exploded.

Nothing collapsed.

Kael lowered Stormfang.

Then he looked at AURIXA.

"Protect the Heart."

AURIXA stared at him.

"That was already the plan."

Kael looked at her.

AURIXA looked back.

A piece of the ceiling crashed between them.

Kael nodded once.

"Good."

Then he turned.

The commander was gone.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"AURIXA."

Her expression changed immediately.

She turned.

Too late.

The commander stood beside the containment cradle.

Something dark and metallic was locked around his arm.

An ancient device.

But it wasn't from Virelith.

AURIXA's eyes widened.

"No."

The commander pressed the device against the cradle.

Crimson energy erupted.

The entire Root Throne Chamber shook.

Kael slid backward.

Elaris grabbed a root to keep herself upright.

Xyren covered his head.

The Heart began to rise.

Slowly.

Only inches.

But it was enough.

AURIXA went pale.

"He's trying to remove it."

Kael forced himself forward.

"Can he?"

AURIXA looked around.

The answer came with the city.

One light went dark.

Then another.

The roots beneath Elaris trembled.

The Root Throne flickered.

"If he succeeds…"

Her voice lowered.

Another tower somewhere beyond the chamber lost its light.

AURIXA looked at Kael.

"Virelith falls again."

The extraction device screamed.

Crimson cracks spread through the air around the Heart.

The fragment rose higher.

Roots along the chamber walls began to darken.

Elaris felt it immediately.

Her breath caught.

"No."

She placed both hands against the roots.

Green energy surged through them.

But the darkness kept spreading.

Ancient machines shut down.

One by one.

A sentinel collapsed.

Then another.

The lights of the Root Throne faded.

Kael stared at the city dying around him.

Again.

The words hit something inside him.

Again.

Stormfang began to hum.

Kael looked down.

The blade was glowing.

The chamber disappeared.

Not completely.

Only around him.

The same figure stood before the throne.

This time, there was no shadow.

No distortion.

The figure turned.

Kael stopped breathing.

It was him.

Not someone who looked like him.

Not a resemblance.

Him.

Older.

His face harder.

Blood ran from one side of his forehead.

Stormfang rested in his hand.

Behind him—

Virelith burned.

Kael tried to speak.

The ancient version of himself looked directly into his eyes.

Then whispered—

"Remember."

Kael's eyes snapped open.

The entire chamber shook.

Stormfang erupted with blue and crimson light.

And somewhere deep beneath the dying city—

Virelith answered.

THUMP.
