Chapter 4 - The First Shadows of the District

The Entertainment District was alive with a symphony of colors, sounds, and hidden menace. Lanterns swayed gently over narrow streets, illuminating wooden façades decorated in intricate patterns, each building a silent witness to both laughter and tragedy. Karina moved among them with effortless grace, her foreign presence masked by the delicate artistry of her disguise—a courtesan's kimono, dark yet elegant, embroidered with subtle silver runes that shimmered faintly under the lantern light.

She had observed for hours from the shadows before stepping onto the streets, absorbing the rhythm of the district, mapping exits, noting the subtle shifts in crowd movement, and detecting the faint pulse of demon energy that lingered like a cold draft in abandoned corridors. Every detail mattered; every nuance could determine life or death.

Her first encounter was unavoidable. Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru, three young courtesans known for their skill and sharp tongues, approached her with measured curiosity. Their eyes flicked over her attire, her posture, and the foreign grace she carried.

"You're new here," Makio said, her tone polite but edged with suspicion. "I haven't seen you before."

Karina inclined her head slightly, offering a faint smile that was more analytical than welcoming. "Indeed. I have just arrived," she replied, her accent refined but foreign. "I hope to learn the ways of this district."

Suma's eyes narrowed, scanning Karina's movements, the slight tension in her stance, and the controlled energy radiating from her. "Learning quickly, are you? That's good. But this place… it's not forgiving. One mistake, and even the strongest vanish."

"I am aware," Karina said simply. Her violet eyes swept over the trio, noting their defensive postures, their attempts to assert dominance over her presence. "Mistakes are costly everywhere, not just here."

Hinatsuru tilted her head, curiosity overtaking suspicion. "You speak with such confidence. And yet… you don't seem like one of us. Are you truly a courtesan?"

Karina allowed a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "I am what I must be to survive and observe. Tonight, that is enough."

The conversation ended there, each side assessing the other silently. Karina moved past them, her steps light but purposeful, blending into the shifting patterns of the district's nightlife. Her eyes, however, never ceased their scanning. She could feel the subtle threads of demon activity beneath the laughter, beneath the music, beneath the veneer of entertainment.

Hours passed in careful observation. Karina noted the layout of high-end houses, the movement of guards and patrons, and the occasional flicker of energy that did not belong to humans. She recorded every anomaly in her mind, creating a mental map that would allow rapid intervention if demons struck.

Then, she saw it. A flicker of movement, a shadow out of place. Daki, the Upper Rank demon, observing silently from above, her crimson kimono blending perfectly with the lanterns' glow. The demon's gaze, sharp and deliberate, traced Karina's every movement, yet Karina remained unaware of the scrutiny, focused entirely on the pattern of the streets below.

Karina's senses, however, picked up the subtle shift—the faint ripple in the air, the almost imperceptible vibration of malevolent energy. She paused, just for a heartbeat, attuning herself to the hidden currents. This was not just any demon; this was an anomaly, a force that could detect the smallest disturbances in its domain.

From the shadows, a minor demon lunged, a wisp of grotesque form attempting to strike at an unsuspecting patron. Karina's reaction was instantaneous. Her hand moved to the hilt of her blade, and the first form of Arcane Breathing flashed briefly—a shimmering illusion of steel slicing the air, precise and swift. The demon fell without a sound, erased before its claws could meet flesh.

The trio of courtesans—Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru—watched in a mixture of awe and fear. "What… what did you just do?" Makio whispered, voice trembling.

Karina's gaze returned to the streets, eyes sharp. "Observation requires readiness," she said softly. "Preparedness is survival."

As she continued her patrol, the presence of Daki remained a silent weight above, a predator measuring a predator. Karina's first night in the district was not about confrontation; it was about establishing presence, understanding the shadows, and ensuring that when the battle inevitably came, she would move with precision, not hesitation.

Even as the lanterns flickered and the night deepened, Karina remained focused, her every step deliberate. The Entertainment District was a labyrinth of illusions and danger, but she was no ordinary slayer. Her Arcane Breathing allowed her to perceive threads of reality others could not see, to predict movements, to counter threats before they fully manifested.

And somewhere above, hidden from mortal sight, Daki's eyes glinted with recognition. This foreign slayer was different. Dangerous. A variable that could disrupt centuries of control.

Karina did not yet know the full extent of her impact, but the city itself seemed to acknowledge her presence. Every shadow, every whisper, every heartbeat of the district was now part of her map. And when the time came, she would strike—not as a novice, not as an observer, but as a force that no demon, no illusion, and no destiny could ignore.
